Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay is based on spins form Urban stations only, while the other is based on audience impressions from Urban and Urban AC. What's the purpose of having both airplay charts? Lol Who knows? LOL Billboard is a mess.com

EDIT: billboard is showing that the first Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop chart was published on July 5, 2008 but then it shows thst the no. 1 song at that time, Heaven Sent by K. Cole, spent 10 wks on the chart til date. don't know what to make of this.

What's the purpose of having both airplay charts? Lol Who knows? LOL Billboard is a mess.com There are actually 3 Urban/R&B/Hip-Hop airplay charts. Adult R&B Airplay (UAC spins) (This is actually just called Adult R&B now they dropped airplay from the title) Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop (Urban spins) R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay (it's compiled in a similar way to the Hot 100 airplay chart the only difference is that it only uses audience data from the Urban radio formats instead of data from all radio formats) Rhythmic is technically considered an "Urban music" chart also but it's data has always been used for the Hot 100 airplay only.

Is there anywhere on the internet you can view archives of urban airplay either by artist or just old charts? Like the way you can see the archives of CHR airplay on that site we all use

There is kworb site until May 2011: kworb.net/radio/urban/archives/Then you have 3 year gap and from about 1985 to 2009 you can dig into Radio and Records archive where you have radio charts for all formats, mostly these are on the back page, later years in the middle of Radio and Records magazine, these are great charts actually as diversity is wide compared to sale charts on Billboard and nowadays. Actually this site still has a gap for 1990 and 1991, otherwise they have basically every week chart plus yearend charts - mostly those contain kinda funny number of top songs of that year as 1991 has 91 top songs, 1992 92 top songs etc. Before 1985 or something they didn't issue charts for different music styles, but i'm not absolutely sure, so you can dig into even further history to find out yourself. www.americanradiohistory.com/RandR_Magazine_Page_Range_Guide.htm

Tank's 'When We' Breaks Record for Longest Climb to Top 5 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Chart
5/11/2018 by Trevor AndersonCourtesy of Atlantic Records Tank The single breaks the barrier after a record 39 weeks. Tank’s “When We” rewrites the record for the longest trip to the top five on the 26-year-old R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. On the list dated May 12, the song climbs 6-5, fueled by a 7 percent increase to 20 million in radio audience in the week ending May 6, according to Nielsen Music. As “When” enters the top five in its 39th week, it surpasses the previous record holder, Kirko Bangz’s “Drank in My Cup,” which needed 35 frames to crack the barrier. The Milwaukee native’s song has also topped the Adult R&B airplay chart for six weeks. Read More Tank Speaks on Success of New Single 'When We,' Working With Aaliyah & Grooming His Artists Here’s a look at the 10 songs that required the most time to reach the top five of R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay: Weeks, Song, Artist, Year 39, Tank, “When We,” 2018 35, Kirko Bangz, “Drank in My Cup,” 2012 34, Frank Ocean, “Thinkin Bout You,” 2012 33, Kirk Franklin, “Looking for You,” 2006 31, Mary Mary featuring Kierra “KiKi” Sheard, “God in Me,” 2009 30, R. Kelly, “Step in The Name of Love,” 2003 29, Monica, “Like This and Like That,” 1995 28, Justin Timberlake duet with Beyonce, “Until The End of Time,” 2007 27, Tank, “Please Don’t Go,” 2007 27, Busta Rhymes, “Touch It,” 2006 “When” debuted on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay on the chart dated Aug. 26, 2017, largely due to its strength at the adult R&B format; it reached the top 10 on the Adult R&B Songs airplay chart the same week. The tune eventually dominated the Adult R&B Songs tally, holding the No. 1 position for 11 weeks from November to January and has remained in the chart’s top 10 for a still-active streak of 39 weeks. The hit’s enduring popularity at the adult format has helped it gain wider mainstream exposure. This week, the tune reaches the top 10 on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop chart, which tracks the most played songs on the format. “When” enters the top tier with a 13 percent jump in plays for the week.

As many of you may have heard by now, Billboard has recently changed the methodology it uses to calculate most of the genre charts, including R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. BB now uses a Hot 100-like formula which incorporates sales and streaming, and includes crossover airplay from other formats. (For example, if "Adorn" by Miguel receives any airplay on CHR/Pop, that airplay will be added to the urban airplay he receives.) This chart only lists the top 25 songs on Billboard.com's website. Billboard has also created an r&b-only chart (which basically just removes the hip-hop songs from the r&b/hip-hop list), which lists the top 15 songs on it. Billboard is keeping R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart which lists the top 40 songs. This chart wasn't a perfect mirror to the old R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, but it was pretty close, so those not fond of the new methods BB has devised should continue to watch the airplay chart. When posting weekly BB chart positions in the songs threads, make clear which chart position you are updating, and PLEASE be sure to include the current airplay chart positions, as this will be what many people in the urban section will be most interested in seeing now. For example, in the Adorn thread this week, you would say: R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay - #1 R&B/Hip-Hop Songs - #4 R&B Songs - #2 R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs - #9 Does anyone know what the methodology was for the old Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart before they changed the methodology in 2012?

I believe it was airplay only from 2002 until 2012....before that it was airplay plus single sales. I don't remember what the ratio was.

No, it was always airplay + physical single sales. It's just that those became more and more rare so it was basically airplay only 98% of the time.

When did the Hot 100 start factoring streaming numbers? 1. It didn't. iTunes and other digital outlets are not always accurate when it comes to the genre classification of songs. Singles and albums by crossover R&B artists tend to be classified under "pop" because the Pop page gets more traffic and exposure, so there is no accurate way of telling which downloads to count and which not to. In other words, there's no way of telling exactly which sales are generated by R&B listeners/consumers. With physical sales that was possible because there were specific stores that reported their numbers to SoundScan in order to compile the R&B charts. 2. I believe it was 2012. In late 2012 Billboard also started including sales and streaming into the genre specific charts.

Genre classification of music is something I've wondered for years about the digital era of music. How do you know the the person streaming or buying a digital download is an R&B consumer or a Pop consumer & how do you chart that? Now I'm beginning to understand why Billboard made the decision to factor the Hot 100 chart into the current Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. I always assumed it had to do with the fact that a lot of big R&B hits from the late 2000's-2012 did underwhelming on the Hot 100 chart, often not even making it into the top 40 of the Hot 100. Speaking of genre classification, Billboard still has issues. It blows my mind that Post Malone & XXXtentacion regularly chart on the solo Hot R&B Songs chart. Yes they technically sing or melodize over Hip-Hop beats, but NOBODY looks at them or considers them R&B singers. They're considered Rappers.

Well that wouldn't have been a good reason. Including downloads and streams in the genre chart wouldn't mean automatically higher position on the Hot 100. The two are not related. Besides, the Hot 100 still factors all radio formats. The R&B/Hip-Hop chart still only factors in Urban and Urban AC radio.
