I'm disappointed that this is done, too, but like Zazie said, I can see why it's a riskier song to add to a playlist. I'm glad that she at least got to #23, especially when she spent so many weeks in the 27-28 range afterwards.
I expect that we'll see an official announcement of the next single in next week's Aircheck/BCU. I'm hoping for "My House", though signs seem to be pointing to "Silver Lining". Either way, the song chosen should hopefully have an easier time gaining acceptance at country radio than "Blowin' Smoke" did, despite BS having a bigger hit to follow up than the new single will.

I hope "Keep It to Yourself" is next, with "Follow Your Arrow" being the 4th single (if there is a 4th).

Sirius/XM doesn't have to worry about offending listeners though because they are getting money whether or not their listeners choose to actually listen to them or not. This is why Sirius/XM plays random obscure songs and plenty of album tracks because they really don't have to try too hard to please their listeners. Terrestrial radio does not have this luxury though. They have to be cautious to what their listeners want and they will be hesitant to a song that "promotes" or even mentions the suggestion of homosexual acts. This is why "Arrow" would struggle. Even if it had good callout scores and great sales, it still may not hit the top 20. As much as I love "Arrow", Kacey needs to release "Keep It To Yourself" as her 3rd single to establish herself at radio. KITY is the most radio-friendly song on the record and with the hype Kacey still has behind her (which may build even more after CMA Award nominations are announced), KITY could definitely out-peak "Merry Go Round".

Sirius XM plays the 'random obscure songs' and 'album tracks' because they don't have 12-20 minutes of commercials per hour. That REALLY allows them the time to test stuff. "promote or suggests homosexual acts?" The song could have trouble in little 'secondary markets' but in the markets with major chart action, the song can/should do well. I don't think Kacey will have a problem 'establishing' herself even with that single. It's just hard for ANY female not in the top 3 to get consistent airplay so if that's the case, she might as well take risks. No risk, no rewards.

I think regardless of what she chooses, she needs to send something out ASAP. I'd still prefer "My House", but I definitely understand the case for just going with "Follow Your Arrow" next. If she only gets one more single from her album, it probably makes sense to release FYA, since it has the most buzz. Maybe they're waiting for the CMA nominations to release single #3 to use it as part of their promotional campaign (as in, play the brand new single from the Album of the Year nominated Same Trailer Different Park).

It's just hard for ANY female not in the top 3 to get consistent airplay so if that's the case, she might as well take risks. No risk, no rewards. You bring a valid point about commercials, I didn't even think of that. But I don't think "Arrow" is going to be a surefire hit on any market, small or large. I think it has the potential to be a big hit because its a phenomenal song and everyone I know loves it whether or not they enjoy country music. But some country radio programmers will be hesitant to play the song because they are afraid they may offend someone if they play it. Country radio programmers are still very conservative and so are a lot of country music listeners, so the song could fail to take off if enough radio PDs don't jump on board initially. I would be 100% on board if FYA was the next single, its just a risky choice, especially for a new artist thats had a top 10 and top 25 hit only. That's why I think KITY should be next because it is more likely to be another solid hit for Kacey. But "All Kinds of Kinds" is somewhat in the same vein as FYA and its doing fine right now, slow for a Miranda single (it is the 5th single though) but its still doing well so maybe radio would be more receptive to playing FYA than I think. Regardless, it is a much riskier choice than KITY. But if radio did roll with FYA, I could see it being a BIG hit for Kacey. I'd like to see it get released after she has a little more established success so hopefully KITY (or Silver Lining) can go top 10 and then FYA can come 4th to close out the album.
