2003 Milestones
April 28: Apple launches the iTunes Music Store with 200,000 songs at 99$ each. The top-selling song of that day is U2’s “Stuck in a Moment” and the top-selling album is Beck’s Sea Change. More than 1 million songs are sold it the first week.
Apple announces the third-generation iPod, which is thinner and lighter than two CDs and holds 7,500 songs.
September 8: 10 millionth song downloaded on iTunes
October 7: The first iPod + iTunes silhouette TV ad airs, featuring “Hey Mama” by The Black Eyed Peas.
October 16: iTunes for Windows is released.
December 15: 25 millionth song downloaded on iTunes.
2004 Milestones
January 6: Apple introduces iPod mini, available in five colors.
March 15: 50 millionth song downloaded on iTunes.
June 15: The iTunes Store goes international, launching in the U.K., France and Germany. The top-selling song that day across all three countries is “Bam Thwok” by Pixies. The top-selling album is The Beastie Boys’ To the 5 Boroughs.
July 12: Kevin Britten downloads the 100 millionth song on iTunes and wins a PowerBook, an iPod and 10,000 free songs.
July 19: Apple introduces the fourth-generation iPod with Click Wheel and 12-hour battery life.
August 10: The iTunes store now offers more than 1 million songs.
October 8: A new iPod + iTunes silhouette TV ad features U2 performing “Vertigo” from the band’s album How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.
October 26: The iTunes store launches in Austria, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain. The top-selling song that day across all of those countries is U2’s “Vertigo.” The top-selling album is Robbie William’ Greatest Hits.

June 28: Podcasts launch on the iTunes Store - the most popular podcasts on the first day include Adam Curry’s Daily Source Code, KCRW’s The Treatment, and Walt Mossberg’s Personal Technology.
July 18: Half a billion songs have been downloaded on the iTunes Store.
August 4: The iTunes store debuts in Japan. The day’s top-selling song is “My Way” by Def Tech, and the top-selling albums is iTunes Originals - Ulfuls by Ulfuls.
September 7: iPod nano replaces iPod mini and goes on to become the bestselling music player ever.
Madonna’s entire catalog is now available on the iTunes Store.
October 11: The Fray’s “Over My Head,” from its debut, is Single of the Week on iTunes. The album goes on to become double platinum.
October 12: TV shows, including episodes offered day after air, are now available on the iTunes Store.

February 23: iTunes sells its billionth song.

June 19: Sarah Bareilles’ “Love Song,” from her debut album, Little Voice, is featured as Single of the Week on iTunes. The following month, Little Voice hits No. 1 on the iTunes charts.
July 1: The iTunes Festival, with 31 nights of free music, debuts in London.
July 17: Colbie Caillat’s “Bubbly,” from her debut album, Coco, is featured as Single of the Week on iTunes. She’s gone on to sell more than 6 million albums and 10 million singles to date.
July 31: 3 billion songs have been downloaded on the iTunes Store. More than 5 million songs are in the catalog.
September 5: Apple unveils iPod touch. Customers can now access the iTunes Store from their iPhone or iPod touch.
November 13: Led Zeppelin’s catalog is now available on the iTunes Store.
2008 Milestones
January 15: The iTunes Store now offers movie rentals from all major film studios.
February 12: ADELE’s “Hometown Glory” is featured as Single of the Week on iTunes before her debut album is released. She goes on to become a multiplatinum artist and worldwide sensation.
March 25: Lady Antebellum’s “Love Don’t Live Here” ” is featured as Single of the Week on iTunes before the band’s debut album is released. The group goes on to win seven Grammy Awards.
April 3: iTunes becomes America’s No. 1 music retailer.
