There are some songs that you hear and you think that it was number one when in fact it wasnt.Recent examples: Katy Perry - Wide awake, Psy - Gangnam style, Ellie Goulding - Lights and Gwen Stefani - The sweet escape. All these songs did not make it to number one on the billboard top 100 but were huge hits. Any others?

Cee-Lo Green's Fuck You comes to mind, it actually "felt" more like a #1 hit at the time than Born This Way.

Despite being one of their signature songs and having massive radio success, Backstreet Boy's "I Want It That Way" never reached the top spot on the Hot 100.
Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" (the essentially her entire Breakaway era) never produced a number one hit.
"I'm Yours" never hit the top of the charts despite holding the record for weeks spent on the Hot 100.

Some of those seem a bit skewed in retrospect, especially because they've become signature hits for them.
I Want It That Way was massive yes, but so was Genie In a Bottle at the exact same time.
SUBG was massive but if I remember correctly, Candy Shop was above it in sales as well when it peaked at #2. In fact, I'm not sure if SUBG ever topped the digital chart. I would even go as far as saying that CS felt bigger as well, because of how giant 50 was at the time. Likewise, you'd be hard pressed to say that BTHE felt bigger than WBT or that BOY felt bigger than Gold Digger when those songs were out imo.
I'm Yours never felt like a #1 hit at all to me. Yes it was big and around for a very long time, but there were always songs that felt bigger than it, even if those songs changed during its run.
Chart peaks and longevity are different things. Just because a song lingers around for a long time doesn't mean that there was a snapshot of that period where it was actually the biggest, or most revenue-generating, song in that moment, which is what the Hot 100 is supposed to try to measure.

A few CCR songs like "Bad Moon Rising," "Down On The Corner" and "Fortunate Son" all feel like they should have been #1 hits, when in fact they all (and two more CCR songs) only peaked at #2.

i agree with Kellys SUBG. and the whole era. i think all her singles from that era, feel like they should have been HOT 100 chart toppers.

Just because a song lingers around for a long time doesn't mean that there was a snapshot of that period where it was actually the biggest, or most revenue-generating, song in that moment, which is what the Hot 100 is supposed to try to measure. I thought it was clear even at a younger age that I Want It That Way would become one of BSB's signature songs. I was really surprised when I learned years later that it never was a #1 hit. It surely felt like one. I understand that everything can seem surprising in retrospect but this song's Hot 100 performance still shocked me. And even with heavy competition, I still am amazed that KC didn't manage to score even a single #1 hit. She literally had everything going for her and still couldn't nab the top spot for even a week. Really, that era deserved a #1 hit. You're right about I'm Yours, though. It never felt like a megasmash at any particular time despite it being around forever.

Push It by Salt N Pepa. hard to believe this didnt even get anywhere close to number one. esp considering its of of the most played gold songs on radio today.
its hard to believe that Salt N Pepa never had a HOT 100 #1. Lets Talk About Sex, Shoop and Whatta Man were also huge.
