The album is going to be country, correct? As in, she'll be releasing songs from it to country radio?

I'm kinda hesitant about calling this country, considering Butch Walker is predominantly a pop songwriter for a very good handful of today's pop stars. I'm looking forward to hearing it, though.

Based on what I've heard about her album (which isn't a whole lot), it's going to be country, but more genre-bending like The Incredibly Machine rather than a straight country record like the first two Sugarland releases. Hopefully it's better than Machine though, because I hated that album and I really miss Sugarland so I'm looking forward to at least something to be released.

Thanks avalyn. I'm hoping it's some good modern country music, more or less. Strong songs (hopefully some good lyrics) and nothing too 'out there' because I, too, did not care for The Incredible Machine.

No problem! There hasn't been a lot said but Rick Rubin stated this to Rolling Stone in May:

Nope! Sugarland fans, never fear. She recently said that she and Kristian Bush are just taking a break, and have no plans to break up.

While I loved The Incredible Machine, I understand everyone's distaste for it. I liked their first album and gradually lost interest with the next 2 releases, especially Love On The Inside (which I despised), but once I heard The Incredible Machine, I became a huge fan of Sugarland all over again. I thought that, while it wasn't country in the least, it was a very creative album. I thought the melodies were captivating while the lyrics were catchy.
I am eagerly awaiting Jennifer's new album and am intrigued to see how well she does on country radio as a solo artist.

Assuming that she'll release a couple of singles from this album, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Jennifer score a Female Vocalist nomination at the 2014 ACM's. I think the CMA's in November will be a little too early yet, but you never know.
I guess, for the CMA's this fall, I'm predicting the usual 3: Carrie, Miranda, and Taylor. I think Kacey and Jana will round out the 5 nominations.
But by the ACM's (and I'm assuming Jennifer's solo success at radio will range from above average to great), I could see it being Carrie, Miranda, Taylor, Jennifer, and then Kacey.

Jennifer will definitely be put in the FVOTY race whether she has major or minor commercial success with this solo venture. She's been missed by radio so I'm sure her solo debut single alone will do well enough to give her the wiggle room into the category. Honestly, all she needs is a Top 20 hit and she's basically a shoe-in for a nomination at either of the shows since Carrie, Miranda, and Taylor will be the only other ones that already have their namecards stapled on the seats. I see Kacey rounding out the 5, as you said, for the ACMs, but since this is just coming out on August 5 and CMA Award nominations are generally always announced in the first week of September (last year's were announced on Sept. 5, 2012), she won't be on the ballot for this year. Next year, more than likely if all goes well with this effort. I actually see this year's CMA nominees being Carrie, Miranda, Taylor, Kacey, and Kelly Clarkson again because she now has "Don't Rush" and "Tie it Up" under her belt for this past year.

Kelly Clarkson is definitely going to be a major obstacle for Jennifer with awards nominations. She is probably the 7th major active female artist. I don't see Sheryl Crow getting much love from the country sphere, and none of the reality show contestants have broken through yet. If "I Hope It Rains" doesn't do much and this song does, Jennifer Nettles could very likely squeak out a nomination at the ACMs, but there's definitely a hill in the way..

But by the ACM's (and I'm assuming Jennifer's solo success at radio will range from above average to great), I could see it being Carrie, Miranda, Taylor, Jennifer, and then Kacey. The first round of voting for the CMAs ended today, and I highly doubt Jennifer would get any nominations for FVOTY at this point since she's literally done nothing in the past year. So even if "That Girl" has a huge opening week and gets to the top 15/20 in a couple weeks (which sadly would put her in position to be one of the top 5 or 6 solo females from the past year), I don't think she would be an option to vote for in the second round. I do agree that she'll be a likely nominee for the ACMs 2014 as long as this song will be the hit we are expecting it to be. For the CMAs this fall, I predict it to be a Miranda/Carrie race as always, with Taylor and Kacey definitely taking up spots (although Kacey isn't certain, its likely), with the last slot going to Jana, Kelly, or even Sheryl Crow.

Someone asked Brian Mansfield what That Girl sounded like, if it was anything like Jolene which he compared the song to theme wise. This was his description of it - "Not exactly, but maybe a little. It has a moody, minor-key acoustic-guitar vibe + hand claps like Simon & Garfunkel's "Cecilia.""

A post on Brian's Facebook said it's basically an answer song to Dolly Parton's "Jolene," sung from the perspective of Jolene. But I like .indulgecountry's guess better, haha.

I'm glad the Tennessean stated what "That Girl" is about more clearly. I was thinking it would turn out to be another "Stay". And I was confused as to why Jen would want to write another. Yeah...

I am DYING to hear this song and get this album. I really hope that she goes away from the country sound and I can really see her doing that on this effort. The soul, funk vibe is what I really prefer so it sounds like this could be right down my alley.

Jennifer spoke to Billboard about the first single as well as the preview she gave them of her new material. This is what she had to say about it. Note, this article states August 19th for a release. I'm unsure if that is digital release or radio since yesterday it was stated a release of August 5th. source

Here is the Billboard article: Jennifer Nettles Previews Solo Album: 'I Wanted There to Be Space, Nuances, Emotion' By Chuck Dauphin, Nashville | July 23, 2013 4:45 PM EDT It might have been a rainy morning in Nashville, but Jennifer Nettles' mood was quite the opposite on Monday morning. The singer played five tracks from her forthcoming debut solo album for an invite only crowd at HOB Studios. She says the album touches on the very diverse list of her musical influences. "I think this album plays to my roots," she told the crowd. "There's country, gospel, 70s music, singer-songwriter stuff, as well. It has been a joy to get to explore those parts of myself. I'm excited and nervous at the same time – all of those things you are when something is important to you." Nettles recorded the album at Shangri La Studios in Malibu. "That was not a bad way to go into the office everyday," she quipped, saying that the ambiance was great – both inside and out. "It was just beautiful being there at the beach, and then the history of the studio. It was owned by Bob Dylan, and went through different hands over the past few years." Nettles Goes Solo: 'Nobody Panic,' Sugarland Isn't Done Producing the album was Rick Rubin, whom Nettles had nothing but the highest amount of praise for. "He was super-active in the recording. He's very much a rhythm track guy, and I think that's a big part of his background. Frankly, one of the two most important major elements of music is the rhythm and the melody. He's really focused on all these things." Nettles said that making the record was a very special experience. "When we first started our dialogue, I sent him over some songs – really sparse, just one accompaniment instrument and the vocals. He likes to hear it that way, and he wanted to hear it that way too. He could get attached to the song that way in those elements, and not have thoughts about how someone else might think they should be produced." If nothing else, Nettles said the aim they took in the studio was to make an album that was personal and intimate. "Technology is so great that you can make things perfect. You can Pro Tools it, auto-tune it, and sometimes technology the human part out of it. I didn't want that for this record – for it to be one big wall of sound with double guitars playing the same part. I wanted there to be space, nuances, emotion, and spirit. The songs all breathe as they should," she said, noting that there's nothing wrong with those elements. "They are great tools to have when you need to use them, but I didn't want that for this record." The first single from the project will be "That Girl," which she penned with an old friend. "I wrote that with Butch Walker. He's out of Atlanta, and used to be in a band called Marvelous 3. He's such a talented musician, and we've known each other for years – since I started out in the Atlanta scene. Everybody kind of runs the same circuit, so there's definitely a songwriting community there like there is in Nashville. But, we had never worked together, so I reached out to him and said 'Hey, I'm doing this new record. Do you want to get together and try to write?" Nettles says the song could also be the flip side of one of Dolly Parton's classic records. "This song has kind of ended up being ‘The Ballad of Jolene.' It wasn't intended that way, as the concept was saying ‘I don't want to end up being that girl.' This woman has obviously been bamboozled, and it wasn't her plan going in. When she found out there was somebody else, she called and told her that it wasn't really her fault." However, as the two continued to write the song, it took on a different feel. "That idea presented itself of 'What if it was Jolene calling and saying 'I really don't want your man. This is not who I want to be. I want to let you know I'm not that girl, but he's being that guy.' It was really fun, and I love the rhythm track. The claps you hear on it, we were listening to references of 'Cecilia' by Simon & Garfunkel and have that clap with a delay on there. It was fun and rhythmic, but you also hear that Johnny Cash pickin' style. That track was super Rick Rubin." "That Girl" will be released on August 19. www.billboard.com/articles/columns/the-615/4329253/jennifer-nettles-previews-solo-album-i-wanted-there-to-be-space

Jennifer performed a radio show today for KICKS 1015. She performed the new single as well as couple other songs, one of which is called "Jealousy." One of the DJ's said Jealousy was the best song she has ever performed. Anyone cap the audio from the performance, per chance? Anticipation is killing me...

^ The dj stated there was a strict no-video policy (I assume that means recording audio as well) put in place by Jennifer due to the fact that show was only her second time performing the songs. Seems she is still perfecting the songs and working through things with them. The reason I found that out was I tweeted the dj and asked about it since I was hoping for a video of the single at least. I doubt there is any audio since it was just a private show though! Just have to hold out a little longer until it's released or Jennifer lifts the no-video policy from her radio tour shows.
