When I saw the song she was covering, I thought her tone would be too heavy for it. But she did a great job.

New album is great. Obviously I need more time to fully judge it, but on first listen I like it more than her last album. Best songs: Mascara, Brand New, Let It Burn, Forever Don't Last, Masterpiece...I love chorus of Veins.

Dumb Mascara #HoodLove Let It Burn Veins Stupid Girl Stanley
I loved both Fearless and Love Me Back but this album isn't as immediate for me. Not that these more "ratchet" songs aren't believable coming from her but I feel the melodies and hooks aren't as strong as on her previous albums. Maybe it's a grower.

I was a bit underwhelmed by the first half of the album, but from "Let It Burn" on down, it's a really great listen. I love the approach she took while writing these records; the lyrics are vivid and engaging. I also love how she showcased the elasticity and versatility of her voice like never before. It's a shame that R&B music (from black artists) is currently in such a dire state, commercially. She's just too good to be overlooked.

I gave it a couple more listens and I'm still not as moved as I was when I heard her first two albums. She's both a dynamic lyricist and vocalist but this album seems the most like a random collection of songs from her versus a cohesive project I can let ride from beginning to end. That said, I do appreciate her trying to show range and flexibility with her concepts and her voice.

Easily the weakest of her three albums, but I enjoy "Let It Burn," "Stanley," and "Masterpiece".

There's no song that I "feel" like a Lions and Tigers or Famous, but Let It Burn is a concept I want to hear her explore more of. That's a highlight track.
I also agree that her vocals - runs/phrasing/register use - are really showcased here.

This isn't as good as her first 2 albums but it's still a decent effort. The strongest tracks are on the 2nd half of the album and I like every song except for "#Hoodlove" (I just cannot get into it. It should have been left on the cutting room floor imo.)

Yall gotta sit with the album for a minute. This is some of her best work. It works as a unit. It's honest, gritty and witty. It's an excellent effort.

For what I like it slays LMB but that's just where I'm at musically listening...she's doing whatever she wants with her voice this album

By far my favorite album from Jaz. The scope is just so wide and ambitious. Songs like Stanley sound more interesting and progressive than she's been, tell me that had Stupid Girl been on Back To Black it wouldn't have gone number one all over the world. There aren't better vocals from anyone on album over the last twelve months. Mascara is a better Prince vibe than she ever really captured on the last album, not to mention the lyrics of it being more of a social commentary than anything on her last two albums as well. Masterpiece is just that and operatic in its brilliance. Elsewhere #HoodLove, Veins, Forever Don't Last and Silver Lining are all four star songs at least. Oh and what kind of Macklemore Can't Hold Us magic is she giving us with If You Dare?
Can't see much topping it as album of the year for me.

I streamed the new album last night and thought it was great on first listen. I'm here for "Stanley" and "If You Dare." They are so different from anything else she's ever done. And alright for her giving us that After 7 sample on "Let It Burn."

I expect her #s to be quite low. 10-20k. I have to listen to the album eventually.

Random question: does anyone know the reason behind the censoring on Brand New? Like, I kind of get the context for censoring the f-bomb (even though she says it in Stupid Girls), but I don't understand why they censored 'ninja' throughout the chorus yet it's uncensored in the second verse? I'm perplexed!
Does anyone know anything about her budget? Idk how these things work (e.g. Since Love Me Back didn't do so well idk if she was given a lower budget for this record), but I've noticed not much effort was put into this record from the beginning. Dumb was kind of just thrown out there with no promo and a low budget video. Same with FDL. She hasn't had any promoted performances anywhere besides that BET performance of Mona Lisa. I'm just wondering what RCA was thinking going into the era.

Idk so much if Jaz gets a small budget cause she recorded the album in philly with just an engineer and I'm sure someone like Salaam who has a great relationship with her isn't hitting her over the head. Outside of Key Wane and the Internz the album doesn't really have BIG name producers. She's got writing credit on all songs so it's not like they have to bring in camps for her which cost a lot of money. Outside of the money spent to get the songs on radio I don't see where it could have went. RCA urban is just truly terrible right now. Tom Corson and Peter Edge are just lost

I think it's a good album. R&B just isn't in right now in the mainstream, so I don't expect it to make much of an impact commercially.

Can we all talk about these vocals on this album? Those alone give this album a solid A, imo. Ugh! Her usage of her voice is quite impressive and she is honestly my favorite vocalist of this generation.
My instant favorites are "Brand New", "Let It Burn", "Veins", "Stanley" and "Masterpiece (Mona Lisa)".
I wish "Brand New" was the third single even though I love "Mascara", but the former is hooky as hell. If she had a huge feature, it should be on that one.
I know Shooter pointed out that the album feels like songs all placed together, but I don't get that feeling. It is very cohesive and I love that each song does stand alone (nothing feels like filler, imo).
I think this album will grow on people and becomes a highlight (praised later on) in her catalog. It is unfortunate that it won't see that much success though.
"Let It Burn" needs to be sent to urban AC asap.

As much as I love the record, Forever Don't Last didn't need to be the second single. Brand New with a feature could've brought some steam to the project and really set up Mascara as real urban hit. And Let It Burn needs to be in full rotation somewhere! I really think this is my favorite effort from her as a whole. Her prior albums had specific standouts for me, but they also had weak spots (You Get on my nerves). I've listened to this album on a loop for days and have yet to feel the need to skip any tracks. Love it.
