Well I like this better than "Blurred Lines" so yay I guess? Haha. I think I'm going to like the promo single coming in a couple weeks. "Dark Horse" was it called? Hopefully it doesn't disappoint. Too much disappointment lately. :'(

She should easily sell over 200k in the UK this week then. I'm not sure. Well first I wonder if pre-orders are included in the ~100k, and also she'll slow down some as the week goes on. 200k definitely possible but I wouldn't say it will be easy. She wont really slow down considering friday and saturday are the two biggest days for single sales in the UK.

It might pick up some over the weekend, but she had Ellie down to less then 0.25 on the pop bars, and Ellie is back up to 0.35 now, so Katy's selling less. Not a huge difference, but enough to make 200k not a lock. That's all I was trying to say.

Yeah, she makes it look too easy. Maybe she really will keep this up for a few albums--not necessarily back to back Hot 100 #1s, but smash after smash. And since Pulse would be nothing without its diva comparisons, that would sort of make her the Mariah Carey* of the 2010s. Who would have thought?
*In terms of hit records only, though I think her hits shares a certain "faceless-ness" that many of Mariah's early hits had.

Yay!!!!! She did it again! Another #1. And omg Stefan that was amazing.
I still get a kick of how every time people try to undermine her.
First she's a 1 hit wonder, 1 album wonder. And then people said Roar would fizzle out...I can't.
So happy :)

The female Mariah :'( It sounds ridiculous though, Mariah isn't exactly the first person I think of as a comparison, even though you're right. Another example could be "the Rihanna of 3 years later".

Rihanna sort of works, but she's always had a few middling-performing singles in the midst of her string of hits. Katy's feel more inevitably, reliably huge each and every time out. I think she needs to have gone through a good four albums of this type of success to warrant being compared to Mariah with regards to hit status, but so far she's on her way.

Agree w/ the Mariah comparison. I'm stoked this went to the top. It was a fun race.

So happy to see this at #1!!
When I Kissed A Girl became a hit I knew she wouldn't be a one-hit wonder. That said, I think her success on pop radio is not set in stone. I feel like whenever she decides to go uncommercial and drops her Russian Roulette/Never Again type of song pop radio will drop her and she'll struggle to recover. Out of her 13 singles, only one has missed the top 3 on both the Hot 100 and pop radio so radio won't forgive her if she gets rid of whatever made her popular in the first place. I actually think that's the difference between her and Rihanna. The latter has covered so many genres and doesn't really have a distinctive sound so it's easier for her to find success with previously untouched territories which is why she 'only' has 3 hits maximum per album; some of her songs hit and some miss because they're all so different and build on their own whereas Katy has a very clear sound and that might turn against her in the future.

I actually don't see Katy having a single 'set' sound. Her sound in OOTB is very different than in TD, and most of her TD singles are pretty distinct from each other. I Kissed a Girl sounds completely different than California Gurls, while both of which aren't like The One That Got Away and none of which are that close to Roar. That being said, Katy tends to track pretty close to what is popular right now. I agree that if she released something too far out of the mainstream, her era would go similarly to Born This Way. However, I think that if she keeps consistently making hits and becomes established enough, she could go her own way to a greater degree and be accepted (similar to how Britney is today, actually). Not saying that she WILL get there, she could end up like Gaga or Ke$ha if she wants to go her own way or gets too arrogant and starts thinking she's invincible. Of course, there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to sacrifice commercial success to make music you love.

CAN'T WAIT!! Although I wished it had more of an 'ordinary life' concept a la Part of Me and then transitioned to the jungle theme via a dream sequence or sth.

Today's the big day for the video. So excited I can't sleep. Katy's going to be streaming and steaming up the charts. #1 hot 100 again next week I predict.

The concept of the video is cool! :) I hope it can be another "classic" like "Hot N Cold", "California Gurls", "Firework", "E.T." or "Last Friday Night".
