Don't worry guys, it may have been in prehistoric times, but there's been an Italian Hot 100 #1 too.

Even though it was paid dust on the American charts, this Romanian sung song was still "Crazy Frog" big in 2004-2005:

The most successful French song that I can recall in my lifetime comes courtesy of Belgium's Stromae. HUGE across pretty much all of Europe (only the UK shunned it but even there it was a minor hit).
I'm actually surprised this didn't dent the US. I still hear it out a lot in NYC. Even Kanye jumped on a remix:

Verisimilitude Does the Macarena not count as Spanish? Or are we not counting it because the remix had some English lyrics? Also, I think the most successful French song would be the Singing Nun - Dominique was #1 for 4 weeks right before the Beatles invasion.

"You're gonna be a shinin' star In fancy clothes and fancy cars And then you'll see you're gonna go far 'Cause everyone knows just who you are..."I agree that it's said that it wasn't a hit in the US. At least it was a prominent sample in a #1 song.

This is in terms of U.S. and/or international success. I am familiar with that Daler Mehndi song and others. Of course that was a HUGE hit in India and Punjabi heavy market.

There were rumors of them trying to push Papaoutai by Stromae in America last year but that turned into a big nothingburger. And although La Bamba was huge, its hard to to give honorable mention to Shakira's La Tortura.
