Hold It Against Me is basically happy hardcore brought to the mainstream, and I'm not the only one who thinks that. 3 is so basic compared to it. We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. I never argued that it wasn't, all I said was '3' deserves credit where it's due. What I did argue was that "Happy Hardcore" isn't the only subgenre that falls under the rave umbrella (or rather that '3' took notes from one of those subgeneres). The quality is a matter of opinion, but you can't sit there and act like 'Hold It Against Me' is somehow superior because its influences are rooted in a specific genre, especially when '3' had similar beginnings. You're free to like it more, but there's no way to make it out to be a technically superior song.

Minimalism is about to be a new trend--calling it now--so ya'll better check out of the pop scene in a year or two if you thought '3' was basic. On the contrary; she was WAY ahead of the curve with that one.

It's already the new trend (why "Roar" is doing better than "Applesauce"). Britney was the first one to say she was going in that direction...I guess she/they said Urban, but I took it as shying away from the busy stuff. Like you pointed out, though, she's been there/done that..it was Femme Fatale that was only one-step ahead of the curve instead of five.

I'm not referring to this album but lol @ the 'Roar' shade. If anything 'Applause' seems more minimal than the other, but I don't think that was intentional...
Anyway, I'm not convinced this record will have a minimalist sound to it--definitely not in the same veign as '3' if it's at all present--but I'd welcome that.

Hold It Against Me is basically happy hardcore brought to the mainstream, and I'm not the only one who thinks that. 3 is so basic compared to it. We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Neither one of them are basic, the only way you could say 3 is basic now is because we are just now starting to hear similar musical elements that 3 implemented 4 years prior to them becoming popular. In that regard 3 was ahead of its time. Kunt is right about 3 having rave influences (which were later utilized by another major pop artist Katy in her hits like E.T. and Part Of Me), Hold It Against Me has them as well, but you don't really hear them until the last chorus along with the harmonies and all the other bells and whistles that go off during that last stanza. Both of them are great pieces of dance music, but 3 came first in that regard. Hold It Against Me was basically a compilation of all the dance music Britney worked on from Britney to Blackout composed in a 4 minute track. As to 3 I think it's a bloody amazing song that did everything it was supposed to do and more. It's very rare for a producer to get Britney in the way Max Martin does in that regard. It was both a nostalgic punch to the solarplex as well as a perfect contemporary cheer-leading stomper in the vein of her earlier material not unlike an updated Oops!...I Did It Again or Baby One More Time. Ultimately it was ahead of the curve, but at the same time respected everything her 11 year career was at that point in time. I'll just ignore that Katy/Ke$ha jab, they weren't doing anything as musically interesting as 3 back in 2009.

3 is f**king incredible. Every line, every note, every beat just oozes pure sexy fun.
Womanizer is very monumental, because it's where Britney invented dance music with infectioud stuttering, later copied by Gaga and Ke$ha.
Hold it against Me was good, but it's aged badly with me. The dubstep bridge however is still the best 30 seconds in any song ever.

If forced to chose I think Circus is better than Womanizer. But like I said there is room for both. I pretty much treat them like a pair anyways because their success kind of depended on each other. They are the only consecutive #1's that Britney ever got on the Top 40 radio charts and on the Digital Songs chart. In that way they are paired siblings, like Sean & Jayden. Both videos are amazing, they are probably in the top 10 for Britney's best music videos. I use Circus more than Womanizer but they're both top notch productions that gave her a whole new level of singles success.

3 belongs on a 3EP along with Ooh La La and Brave New Girl.
No thanks.

Circus has the better beat/tone, Womanizer has the amazing sexy video and 3 has the orgasmic feel in its music

Toxic > all of those to be honest. Ok. But I'm tired of people acting like that's the only song she ever recorded.

'Toxic', 'I'm A Slave 4 U', 'Piece of Me', and 'Womanizer' (lol...) all shuffle around as my favorite songs in her discography, but in the moment 'Toxic' is probably my favorite. I'd also argue that it was her biggest standalone hit in the sense that it stood the test of time for the song itself, not necessarily the imagery associated ('...Baby One More Time', 'I'm A Slave 4 U') or otherwise.
When that song comes on, 'Crazy In Love' comes off.

"Kiss You All Over" is kind of flat as is, but it had a lot of potential. It would've fit in perfectly before or after "Hot As Ice."

"Toxic" is the best pop song recorded this side of the millennium (and possibly of all time). I will not be told otherwise.
But that aside, "3" is very much an earworm. It's impossible not to imagine one's self pussy popping to those sharp, commanding synths and the feverish build up to the speedy final chorus. I think it is time to retire those high pitched sex doll vocals for album #8, though.

Oh my god, I still can't get over how life-affirming "Toxic" is. The surf guitar, the dramatic futuristic strings, the ecstasy-like "too HIGH, can't come DOWWWN..." hook, "I need a hit, BABY GIVE ME IT!", her unmistakably Britney annunciation of "TOX-EEEEK!", the extended Onyx breakdown and choreography, the abrupt and dramatic outro which then segues to "Outrageous", all f**king perfection. And the video, her best-THE best, ever: Somebody please try to convince me otherwise.

When that song comes on, 'Crazy In Love' comes off. Preach! If it wasn't for that sample Crazy In Weave wouldn't even achieve bonus track status. Toxic was conceived and given birth inside The G0dney's holy body.

Okay. Circus is iconic in that it defines her career. The single builds up to the chorus and matches the lyrics perfectly. It's in my top faves.
Don't get me started on "3" still pissed it was blocked by Replay!!!! The lyrics, beat, her voice is pure Britney grown up. I don't get all the hate for 3. Hard to choose after 14 years.
Not sure my #1 single but top 5: Gimme More IAS4U Circus Toxic 3 HIAM
(Oops that's 6)

I about lost my s**t when I first saw the Womanizer vid. It was literally like stepping in a time machine and going back to when she was in her absolute prime. After being so used to her as a nervous wreck at that point it was simply a shocking and monumental success. I think Circus is technically the superior vid (and I do like Circus as a song more too), but it will never be as memorable as Womanizer. One's the more memorable of the two, the other is the superior of the two. Both win. This. I couldn't agree with you more. Womanizer was such an event. Between the video, leaked snippet(s?), promo performances (Hello STAR ACADEMY!) and the single cover it was clear to me that Britney was ready to dominate again. It seems like for the first single from the eighth album they're going all out, and I have faith that we can have a singles run as flawless as Womanizer - Circus - Amy again!

I've never been disappointed with a first single from Brit (with MAtM being the worst, but still OK). I can't wait to hear this!

YESSSSS! I can't whenever people throw shade at Boys and then turn around and praise Lucky, FTBOMBH and I'm Not A Girl >:(. Lucky may have lyrics that would alienate 99% of the world, as most of us are not superstars, but it’s a great bittersweet pop song. NME described it as “perhaps Britney’s finest moment” actually :) And they're right.
