"It Ain't The Whiskey" will be the 3rd single off of "Set You Free". Not sure of an adds date yet.

Great choice; I love this song & Gary delivers the vocal with such authenticity.
Here's the video Gary/his team tweeted out yesterday.

This is one of my favorites from the record; heck, may as well say from the whole year thus far. I really hope this can become at least a top 10 hit for him, because I know where it's going on mine. ;)

Ehhhh, I just don't much care for this one...but I can't really put my finger on what it is.
I was actually hoping for "Hungover Heart" and thought it would be a solid choice as the third single.

I think this is a great song, but I'm not sure how radio will take to it. Still, I love Gary's vocals on this and the lyrics are stellar. I feel like so many songs today are about cruising down a backroad with cute girls and a couple of beers. The sad songs haven't seemed to make much of a dent on the radio playlists and I don't like that trend. Some of my favorite songs are the ballads that just have those real and raw lyrics, and I haven't heard too many of them lately--it doesn't seem like many have made it to radio as singles.
So, props to Gary for recording and releasing this. I can't help but think that "Tough Goodbye" or "Sand In My Soul" would've been better picks for radio, and both of those are very quality songs. But I'm just glad he's getting a new single out, because it's a good one--great lyrics, great sound, great voice. Hopefully he can get another top 20 with this...anything higher would be icing on the cake.

I wish this would have done a little better at least, but bring on "It Ain't the Whiskey". Woo! So glad to see that my wish was granted! ;)

This is my favorite song on a strong album. With that said I think this song probably won't reach is full Petential with it following up Peices. For some reason Peices to me seemed like one of the weakest songs gary Allan has ever released and I wasn't shocked it didn't make top 10 I think this song should have been the true follow up to every storm and if this manages top 10 follow it up with you without me and maybe it can spare the momentum he had

I do like this song a lot, but I don't think it's the right choice at all right now. Unfortunately, I think it'll be lucky to crack the top 40 in the current readio climate. Had this been following a hit, I'd say it could maybe make the top 20/25. But since it's not, I think it'll struggle to even go top 40. Something like "Tough Goodbye", "Sand In My Soul" or "No Worries" probably would have worked better.

I'm sure it'll be a 'slower' run up the charts but this is an artist and label and radio programmer favorite so hopefully this means that the programmer's bosses will eventually play the tune. It's artistic and sets a story and while it's "sad" it has a cool melody to it that should work to get it to Top 20 and if it falls in just right, perhaps Top 10 or higher.

To me, it reminds me of a similar tempo/sadness to Jason Aldean's "The Truth". That one made it to number 1 and hopefully this song can as well! Great choice.

First time hearing it. Wow, that is a REALLY good song. I hope it does well. Gary's had success with sad songs before, so who knows, maybe he can pull it off!

Oh geez, I love this song and though I didn't expect it to do great, I thought it would do well enough to warrant further singles from the album. Now there should be some serious concern straight from the get go with it going up against Keith Urban, Randy Houser, AND Sara Evans for adds. Hopefully those all get a bunch of adds before the adds date with not much else coming out until the 23rd.
I will be incredibly disappointed if "Bones" is not a single, but with the way this whole era has gone, they may be forced to release "Tough Goodbye" or "Sand in My Soul" or just maybe "Hungover Heart" if they go past 3 singles.

I am not an industry expert by any means, but this song seems like the kind that could really gain some steam from a stellar music video. Telling the story of a mentally and physically wounded soldier that captivates and leaves the audience stunned by its visual elements could really catapult this song into the top 20 and beyond. If it's done right this could be a VOTY and SOTY contender.

This is a decent song, but I doubt it'll do much on the charts. "Pieces" was pretty radio-friendly and yet only managed to barely scrape the top 20. I'm expecting "It Ain't the Whiskey" to have a run similar to "Wild in Your Smile" or "I Hope It Rains." Much like Dustin and Jana, Gary's lead single was a big hit and therefore he had enough momentum to get the second single off his album to a pretty decent peak position, but he will now have about as much momentum as he'd had before making this "comeback" and "It Ain't the Whiskey" will probably run out of steam around #40.

"Wild In Your Smile" is nowhere near being done. DL is also an artist with a different 'track record' with radio. I do agree "Tractor" was the long choice for #2 (miles different from "Cowboys And Angels") but to say that "Wild" is done yet is pretty far fetched. I think this one can and will do at least as well as "Pieces" did, if not better. It strikes me as the kind of song many people will relate to. EDIT: the radio edit I received is a minute shorter and the mix is different. More mid tempo.

I'm hoping to see this take off for Gary. I have been a fan of his since "Her Man" from way, way back in the summer of 1996 and I still can't for the life of me understand why he hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves from the industry. I was anxiously waiting and hoping he would get some of that from the CMA's, but alas it was not meant to be. I regrettably have only seen him live once, with Rascal Flatts (what in the world was he doing on tour with them?), and will and forever always appreciate him as an artist, yet always hoping he finds his recognition within the industry. Maybe come Grammy time he'll nab his nominations for song and album.

I agree with churchchoir. This is Gary's bread and butter. "It Ain't The Whiskey" is a great song(A great COUNTRY song)...Others take note(FGL, Luke, Jason, etc). But "Pieces" was more radio friendly than this single. I'm afraid that radio won't warm up to this song. I'm still glad that MCA released this though. " Kiss Me When Im Down" barely cracked top 40 on mediabase back in late 2010, early 2011 and like "It Ain't The The Whiskey", that was a 3rd single and like that case followed a teen peeking 2nd single. So with the type of song here,I think this wont do as good as it should...As much as I love it. Hope I'm proven wrong though cause this sound is much needed in today's airwaves.

^ I do think you'll be proven wrong. It took "Down" 20 weeks to crack 2 million in audience. It's hard to find a good explanation, but that song never really got going, whereas I think the current release will be past 2 mill in 4 or 5 weeks and on its way to a much quicker top 40 debut.
It's not the song I would have picked to release, but there's something convincing about Gary's pain songs and I think this has a reasonable shot at getting him back to the top 10. I expect a peak between 8 and 12, based primarily on the authenticity of the lyrics and his strong delivery.

It's not the song I would have picked to release, but there's something convincing about Gary's pain songs.. Couldn't agree more. I too would not have picked this song at first, but after quite a few more listens its quickly becoming one of my favorite Gary songs of all time. I was thinking and wondering earlier today that what if...what if Gary and his team had taken the route of say, I don't know, maybe Eric Church, where would Gary be today? As a resident of Austin and getting to live through the weekend event (now two weekends) of the ACL festival, Eric Church is one of the very, very few country acts to perform at this years festival. He's not only performing both weekends but also a popular local event place called Stubb's. What if Gary had taken this kind of route back in the day instead of...well, I remember seeing him on tour with Rascall Flatts back when they were the big act and couldn't help but feeling that he and his music weren't reaching the right demographic. I just didn't know why he was on tour with them. His music speaks to the type of crowd that Eric is going after at ACL...those that respect has to be earned by the content of their music and their cut and dry talent without strings attached. Gary's repertoire speaks for itself. He would do great in a venue such as ACL. Anyways, back to the topic. This is the type of song that will likely find an audience. I'm not sure I can name a song off the top of the head that I remember having such a haunting steel guitar. The sound of it always gives me the chills.

I'm warming up to the choice, thanks to the strong arrangement. My standard for "chills caused by steel guitar" was set by Midnight In Montgomery, and I'm not sure this is in that league. But it's going to do pretty well in the Gary-comeback department, and that's all I want. No use crying because I didn't get the exact single that I wanted, and besides, my track record at picking hits is less impressive than I usually admit.
I'm hoping this cracks the top 50 on MB this coming weekend, so I can track its progress on a daily basis. I'd love to see this one make the countdown shows in November, so that it can be well-established on radio before the holiday season, when it could easily get lost.

This was a factor in me originally thinking this single wouldn't reach it's full potential. That Christmas season can reek havoc on a song like this. If its stuck in the 40's come Thanksgiving it might stall, and come New Years, never recover. My wish is that this has a slow but steady rise similar to "Best I Ever Had". With every listen to "It Ain't The Whiskey" the higher it gets on my all time favorite Gary songs (He's in my top 5 all time country artist, so that's a huge compliment).

No chills running down the back of your spine by steel guitar song will ever compare to that of Midnight in Montgomery. Such a haunting song that will forever stand the test of time.

Well I know it's early. But "It Ain't The Whiskey" has been in the top 60 for 6 weeks now and is already losing spins. I expressed that I thought this song would suffer a similar fate that "Kiss Me When I'm Down" suffered. It seems lately that Gary's third single from an album is one too many for country radio. I was actually surprised "She's So California" got up to # 24 on Mediabase in early 2009, and the for mentioned "Kiss Me When I'm Down" hit # 38 on Mediabase. That coupled with the dark traditional country subject matter of "It Ain't The Whiskey" is why I was worried. It's early enough to have faith in this still working its way up to the top 30 but I'm not putting any money on it. If it falters that would be a shame cause this is one of my favorite Gary songs and he is one my faves so that is saying something. And this song is much better than "Pieces". Even though I understand why MCA went with that choice as the second single. It was probably the safest pick for a follow up to "Every Storm".

I think I may have missed the boat on this one, while Churchchoir and Sabre were right about its future. I thought it would already have been in the top 40 for two weeks by now, but it's not even close. It doesn't even have half the airplay the #40 song has.
I was thinking about Travis Tritt's comeback -- after some songs charted badly, he released and got a #1 with Best of Intentions. And then he released what I thought was a truly great song, Great Day To Be Alive, and kept his momentum going. Travis has had a better radio career than Gary but I still was hoping there would be a parallel between the two. Even when Gary's follow-up single didn't do well, I thought he could get back to the top 10 with single #3, and have maybe less of a comeback run than Travis, but at least a good one.
But it doesn't look that way. Who's the right parallel? Maybe Tracy Lawrence? He had a couple of comebacks but I'm thinking about the big hit that had guest appearances by Tim and Kenny. After that, nothing much. I guess it's hard to sustain momentum once you've lost it. I'm still rooting for Gary, and I hope we're all wrong about this song but I'm not optimistic at this point.

I agree that this one has started off slowly, but I'm not ready to write it off yet. I think there's reason to be optimistic. This song got 7 more adds today (including stations in Detroit & Minneapolis), and the video will be coming out soon (per Gary's Facebook page). It's only been out there for a few weeks, and I think the fact that MCA chose this as a single means that they are committed to the release. I am pretty sure that this will get a chart run of at least 20 weeks or so, and we'll see how it does over that time span.
I never felt very good about its chances of out-peaking "Pieces", but maybe this can get into the top 30. I think "Tough Goodbye" or even "Sand In My Soul" would've had a better chance at radio, but Gary and the label obviously feel strongly enough about "Whiskey" that they decided to release this one instead.
