I think what may have confused people was "The Summer Of 19 You + Me". The word "Of" may have been confusing to thinking it's a year. If it was "The Summer When We Were 19 You + Me" it would have prevented the discussion of whether it was a year or an age. But that doesn't quite flow off the tongue as well in a song. That's the reason I asked. I thought it was about the year because they say "Summer of 19 You and Me". I didn't know if it was 1919, 2019, ect. Now I think of it, it can be taken "summer of 19" when they both were 19 years old. That is how I take it. And while I guess the other way it was explained earlier makes sense, I like it this way better. Plus, the writers were born in '87 and '91. If they are talking about memories of the years when it was 19something (ie 1997, 1998, etc) they would have been 12 and 8.

I always thought it was referring to a year, though not a specific one. 19 You + Me means that it doesn't matter which year or how long ago it was, all that mattered was that that particular summer revolved around them (you + me). That's how I interpret it.

Yeah, same here. Like they were saying the summer of 1999 for example, but instead of knowing by the year it was the summer of them.

I've also always thought it was 'The Summer of 19" referring to the summer of being 19 and the phrasing was just for cadence (kind of like 'baby you a song' ) The video is well done-and I agree this duo should really appeal to teens. Not to seem creepy, but those are two very attractive guys.

Brief audio clip of Dan + Shay talking about the song bit.ly/MmcVcI Dan + Shay have said many times on their radio tour that the song is a nostalgic look back on summer. They didn't want it to represent a specific year. So instead of the song lyrics being summer of 1988 or whatever they decided to use summer of 19 you and me. That way it represents any time period, any summer. Summer of 1943, summer of 1965, summer of 1991... Yeah, I always thought that they meant a year in the 1900's, like "19 Something" by Mark Wills. Basically I was thinking "Summer of 19 You + Me" was instead of "Summer of 1998" (or 1997, etc.)

The way that schoolsout interpreted it is correct. When referencing a past summer, you can say "That happened in Summer of 1993." Instead of singing "It was everything we wanted it to be, summer of 1993" (which would make sense) the songwriters decided to focus on referencing that past summer as the summer of "you + me." The addition of "19" in front of "you + me" is just to play off of people saying "summer of 1993" (or whatever year) and hence, it took place in the summer of 19you+me (maybe if the title were like that it would be less confusing, although it would bug me a lot).

But he did correct himself after the song was finished. Lol

Wait. Does their Best Duo nomination at the ACMs make them ineligible for best new artist next year?

T2 won duo in 2012 and was nominated for best new in 2013, so I think they would be okay.

Ok, I give up. This one has grown on me a lot to the point where I actually really enjoy it. Please, Dan + Shay, become a more popular duo than FGL. These guys have way, way better voices than the FGL guys, and these are much better lyrics and stories. I like that I can actually hear the banjo in this...I couldn't when I first heard it, and I think that was because the vocals just really distracted me (in a not-country-sounding way).
I hope some of the other songs on their album will have more of a country sound to them (I certainly wouldn't want them to get any further on the pop end of the spectrum than this song is). But I do like this now, even as a song on country radio. Well done, Dan + Shay...there are very few artists who can put out a song that I just try to ignore for weeks at a time before I finally cave in and admit that I like the song.

To do that, Warner Bros. (Dan + Shay's label) will have to outhustle Republic Nashville. Not going to happen this year, next year, maybe.

These guys just remind me so much of early Rascal Flatts. I've only heard a few of their other songs, but "Stop, Drop, and Roll" sounds like a summer smash simply waiting to happen. I think they can overtake FGL in the next few years.

Dan + Shay cover Rascal Flatts: I also think that Stop Drop And Roll should be Dan + Shay second single.

I'm not into this song and the duo at first but they are now my favorite among the new acts around. I think I fell in love with Shay Mooney's voice. Lol. Their acoustic performances on youtube from their radio tours are all solid. This duo deserves great success.

It's a mid-tempo, percussive song with pop-leaning sounds (they always will have this with their voices) and some FAST vocals in the verses at times (not unlike Ed Sheeran's "U And I").

Agreed, their songs are solid. I could see this song being a single as well. The lyrical content, vocals, and production really make their songs stand out. It seems they have widespread positive reviews from country radio and they certainly have many options for a second single.

"What You Do To Me" is fantastic. I pre-ordered the album solely because of how much I love "19 You + Me" and after hearing WYDTM, I have high expectations for this album!

Just heard Stop, Drop and Roll for the first time and holy cow if that's not an absolute smash, I don't even know. That song could print money.

Every song I have heard is such a jam... And the buzz these guys have right now is incredible for a new act and 100% that I have heard is positive. They are the surest things to a breakthrough artist as I have ever seen.
Calling it now....2014 CMA New artist of the year winners right here

Wow so much praise on the Country forum for a pop song. How times have changed!
With Top 40/Pop radio straying so far towards the Dance/Rhythmic sound, it seems like all these new pop/rock artists (FGL, Cassadee Pope and now these guys) know they need to market themselves as Country artists to get any radio airplay.
Seems like we got ourselves a "musical chairs" situation going on lately. Dance/Rhythmic took over the Top 40 radio "chair", which snowballed into Pop/Rock taking over the Country radio "chair". Is there a chair left for Traditional Country? Until Top 40 radio welcomes back Pop/Rock music as their dominant sound (hint: not anytime soon), I think Country radio will continue to embrace the pop/rock sound to win over ex-Top 40 radio listeners.

I'm kinda burnt out on this. My local station has played it a ton and it has not stood up well at all for me.
The new song, "What You Do For Me", is fantastic though. WAY better than this IMO.

I really don't understand why so many people think this is so poppy sounding. Yes, it obviously does some, but 90% of today's country does. I personally think there are several songs on country radio right now that are way more pop sounding than this one.
