Surprised there's no thread for this yet... Chase Rice co-wrote Florida Georgia Line's 'Cruise' and came in 2nd place on Survivor: Nicaragua. His song 'Ready Set Roll' is blowing up on iTunes (currently #29 at the time of this post) and is starting to get some airplay. The Ready Set Roll EP is being released this Tuesday, October 15, 2013. I always defend this new movement and says this is what they have to do to get AirPlay, but I think. Just found the breaking point for me. This is horrible and doesn't belong on country radio. The guy doesn't have that pleasant of a voice , and what's worse the lyrics don't compliment it. It seems like he's rushing through the whole song to get the mess of lyrics through before the beat ends. I can't see this doing much and if it does you guys will have another person on boad with the hating the new movement.

I found myself really enjoying "That's How She Rolls" on The Highway and had convinced myself that I was going to give Chase Rice the benefit of the doubt given I find his vocals to be significantly easier on the ears than his frat-pack cohorts.
But then I heard this and I kind of wish I could unhear it. Between the autotune and the borderline misogynistic lyrics (does he really say something about shimmying her fine ass up in his truck? CAN WE SING ABOUT SOMETHING OTHER THAN GETTING DRUNK AND SEX, PLEASE?!?!) I... can't give him a chance. This is a mess.

This is probably my least favorite based off the previews of all the songs he has on Youtube of his EP coming out on Tuesday. I was really hoping "Look at My Truck" would be released next! But I'm guessing this one was released to promote his EP. I loved "Thats How She Rolls", we'll see if this grows on me, but its not looking good.

^ I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this will not grow on me. Is this some kind of joke lately ( "1994, " That's My Kind Of Night, "Drink To That All Night", "Tippin Point") , now this. Zazie mentioned a possible parody with Jerrods, but if this continues I'm sure we'll get one sooner or later.
Out of all of those, this ones the worst. What the hell is up with that open? If its meant to be creative it sure as hell didnt work, it just sounds horrendous. I've officially given up on how to come up with new words for these songs.

The line about the man in the moon putting in some overtime is pretty clever, as is "Goodyears and good times".
"Your little fine ass" is really jarring in this song though. And that Microsoft Sam voice in the beginning and end is just bizarre.
I have to wonder just what the tipping point will be for frat-boy country, if the most recent songs are making even an apologist such as I tilt his head. I don't like "That's My Kind of Night" or "Aw Naw" that much, even.

I don't think this sub-genre will last much longer. At some point, the bean counters are going to realize that they're asking too much when they fantasize that adult women are going to want to listen to crude songs about "little fine ass[es]." This is not going to be the kind of music that brings country music to new levels of success, even if it works for awhile.
I have to say thanks to Chase Rice. Some people are going to notice, because of these lyrics, what they should have noticed a couple of months ago. If people listen to this song, it will shorten the life of this style of country music by 6 months. Of course if the song fails to chart, I'll have to withdraw my thanks. But somebody soon is going to notice that this style of music has limited appeal.
I don't mind the occasional line-crossing that comes with intelligent, well-written lyrics. Nowadays I don't think that bothers too many people. But this level of crudeness?

This song is going to be a hit because the people that are buying all of these singles and pushing this new movement to the top don't want good music, they want music they can't get drunk to in a bar or out in a field somewhere.

That's what I was thinking too. That the nadir of these songs — the songs that even I, as an apologist of this subgenre, don't care for — are signaling, if not hastening, the demise of "Frat boy" country. This subgenre can't be out there much longer.

I just want either Chase or Cole Swindell to release "A Dozen Roses." Not sure which one has control of that one right now but I like it a lot.
And this is as frat country as it gets.

I actually did like the verse because it had unique instrumentation and the vocal arrangements were pretty good. The chorus isn't terrible, but it lost me a bit. Still, there are certainly worse songs out there. I'm sure this will be at least moderately successful for him, considering this style of music is doing really well right now. I actually like this song well enough . I'm not going to run and buy it, but it isn't that horrific to me.

After listening to this mess, I've decided they should change the name of 'Frat Boy Country' (FGL, Luke Bryan, others who are trying to cash in on it) to "I'm insecure about being Country and really wanna be RAP and hang with the cool kids".
I don't mind blending of genres at all (I really like Fuse) but the vocal style is rap, the music so electronic and the lyrics.......aren't the real country folk sick of their lifestyle as being characterized as just one big dumb boozefest riding around in trucks hoping to get laid? The inclusion of 'ass' in there is just.......not even artistic. And working toward being as misogynistic as Rap has the reputation of being (whether deserved or not-that is another argument).

Pretty much. And the fact that parts of these songs get stuck in your head rather easily.

Was with my dad yesterday, before I had to work and this song came on my Sirius/XM radio. You know a song is bad when the mello laid back person my dad is starts laughing uncontrollably, and says "You know something...I think this sub-genre of country music has just jumped the shark"...Enough said.

This is horrendous. I can accept a lot of variety in country music, but this is too much. And it really has nothing to do with it not being 'country' (which it's not); it's just an awful song.

If this gets played at Country Radio, the genre will have officially died.

And the EP flew to #1 on Itunes. This just shows how radio has brainwashed their listeners into thinking this mess is actually Country music and the weak minded are believing every word!

This is just embarrassingly bad. There is truly no limits to where Nashville wont drag this genre though.I swear its almost like it gets worse week by week , and song by song. I actually find myself wishing the entire genre would just implode and put all these posers out of a job.

Radio brainwashed their listeners? He's not even on most radio stations yet. This is just a great marketing push to fans who DO like him.

I'm talking about this whole movement in general of Frat Boy/Rock/Rap/Country/whateverthehellitis. I should have been more clear. This is far beyond Chase. This song doesn't help matters at all though.

In fact, it's actually mostly the new normal, at least on the male side.

I'll make sure to keep my Country radio turned off and my CDs blasting from the 80s, 90s, 00s and the artists who debuted in the 10s who I've bought music by which I can count on 1 hand.

This trend isn't going to change until people STOP BUYING THE MUSIC. Chase Rice is among the top 5 in pre-purchased LPs this week on itunes (all genres) so fat chance of that happening. I actually enjoy this song and others like it in certain circumstances (while training for my half-marathon) or as an every once in awhile listen. But to have a large portion of the music played sounding similar to this is beyond insane.

The problem is...are the people buying the frat boy stuff the same people that actually have listened to country music from, say, anytime in the 1980's, 1990's, or 2000's? I think this new trend doesn't fit in the country genre at all, and it should be its own separate genre. I understand the desire to bring in new listeners but changing the type of music you play in order to do so? It doesn't make sense for most of the conglomerate/corporate stations to even call themselves "country" stations anymore.
This style of music might be incredibly popular with consumers but I question just how many of these consumers are actually out there listening to any country artists that haven't made it a habit of delving into the frat-boy trend. That's precisely why I think the country genre is beyond the point of an identity crisis, because from my viewpoint, mainstream country radio is no longer catering to fans who are inherently associated with actual country music. I wish Nashville didn't feel the need to be the only genre to embrace this style of music when it has just as much (if not more) in common with rock/pop sounds.

I've seen lots of artists with tons of digital buzz but virtually no airplay to speak of. I still think there's a chance radio might reject this for how "weird" the production is, and how sleazy the "ass" line sounds (although I think that's more in the delivery).

There's also the fact that he still doesn't have a big label to push this... I'm not saying he won't eventually land on a bigger label, but his current label is Dack Janiel's Records...not exactly a powerhouse. Chase got a little airplay from a couple stations and managed to chart with "How She Rolls", and this might do the same. Of course, based solely on his sales numbers, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a bigger label come in and scoop him up before year's end. But, even if a bigger label does pick up promotion for this, I also wouldn't be surprised if it didn't wind up doing well, basically for the reasons that Ten Pound Hammer listed. There has to be a tipping point where it pushes too far, and listeners who actually want the country-er stuff on their radio will push back and reject this song (and others like it) as country music..
