I'm curious as to what Venus sounds like, but it would be really hard for it to beat this.

Smartest decision she and her team have made since rush-releasing EOG.

I hope she slays with this. Giving us that relateable, slutty, PB & JAMMMMM sandwich we've been asking 4.

I don't know...I do enjoy the song, but I'm not convinced it's a huge radio hit yet. I'm very interested in hearing "Venus" to see if this was the right move.

I'm fine with this as the single, though I hope its performance wont suffer cause of the last minute decision.

I don't hear huge radio smash here either but the iTunes performance is convincing enough

This wasn't even that huge on iTunes, was it? I mean it had a huge lead for like... three hours. But Royals is already about to overtake it and it's only Tuesday.

I love how the preorders made this #1 all around the world. Even though this didn't make #1 on its own merit necessarily it's given everyone - including the label and the GP that it's a popular song and therefore a good song. Get that free promo gaga!!

This song is such a jam! It's underwhelming at first.. well the first stanza but then R Kelly comes in and his verse is infinitely better than GaGa's

I'm assuming the label would have actual sales data and be able to differentiate from presales

I do think the label would be able to tell the difference and it has done well, but it just doesn't seem like it has done well enough to alter plans only a few days before launching a promotional campaign for another song. Like, if it only has modest drops for the rest of the week it may sell around 200-250K and then subtract presales and is that really so overwhelmingly, shockingly good that they were inspired to ditch the single Gaga has already been promoting as #2? I guess they are taking into account the positive feedback too and worldwide numbers. I also heard that Gaga wanted Venus, but the label wanted something different so maybe the label saw this as an "in" to get their way lol.

An Instagram photo of the lyrics? I definitely didn't get the impression "Venus" was actively being pushed, and I follow the music industry 10000x more than your average person.

I think it's riskier if they leave dwuw now on the table when there is some hype and momentum and then Venus goes and flops. Now they can still move on to Venus next

Could this be Ga's next TEOG? I think so. Even if it's just promo for now, this will definitely help move ARTPOP, which is the ultimate goal. Called it! Yeah. LOL. No loss on Venus. After all, weren't they planning on releasing a new track each week until ARTPOP's release? The reaction was just too universal to let this sit on the shelf for months.

The first ~90k downloads on US iTunes were due to the pre-orders. The song would have gone number one eventually on it's own merit eventually, since the pre-orders happened the night that it was released.

This song broke Adele's record Adele's record for what? Highest number of countries with a #1 ranking on iTunes. "Do What U Want" is at #1 in 83 countries, surpassing Adele's former record of 80 with "Someone Like You." (h/t Twitter)

Messy as fuck changing the single last minute but it's probably for the best. This is what people want to hear from Gaga, not more unintelligible screaming with horrific lyrics.

Yeah I remember Gaga saying something along the lines of wanting to release her favorite song next (Venus I guess), but her favorite may not equate to a big hit. We know Judas was one of her favs from BTW. I wouldn't be surprised either if this is what the label wanted, and Gaga was being stubborn about it. Then maybe the iTunes performance and online reception finally convinced her to give in.

They learned their lesson from Judas and are going with this album's TEOG straight out of the gate.

I see she jumped on the retro-disco revival bandwagon.
