^Have you ever heard of the song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together"? That is not a country song It was promoted to country radio and managed to get into the top 15 on the radio airplay chart, also you have to look at songs like "Love Story", "You Belong With Me", "Man, I Feel Like A Woman", "Cruise", "Islands in the Stream" and many more.

That is not a country song I'd have to see the statistics I guess (if there are any).....but it is my impression that uptempo have a greater chance of crossing over. Taylor- you can't argue which song of hers is country/not since Taylor is widely regarded as not country anymore anyway. Not a big fan so I don't recall which song of hers crossed over first-slow ballad or uptempo? Carrie U.- Some of each, but certainly her uptempo songs crossed over-was Before he Cheats a bigger cross over or was Jesus Take The Wheel? Kellie P-her uptempo country pop hit with Taylor Keith Urban- biggest cross over hits were uptempo, Kiss a Girl being the largest? Sugarland- Was Stay ever a crossover? I certainly remember up tempos like Stuck On You crossing over. Lady A- Huge hit Need You Now, mid tempo. Although they are largely mid tempo anyway, IMO. LBT- Was Pontoon their cross over hit? I consider that up tempo Band Perry- They most definitely had a ballad smash-If I Die Young Glorianna-I believe Wild At Heart may have been their biggest cross over? If Kiss You was, that would be mid-up tempo To be honest I didn't follow Country until the last 3-4 years. But being a rock/AC/HAC listener-I don't recall many country ballads being played-I recall largely uptempo. So my above list is purely based on what I heard on the radio in my non-Country listening days :) Not too scientific. ETA: Getting way off topic here-sorry. Most of these songs never crossed-over.

Yes, we've had more than a half dozen posts in a row now that had nothing to do with Luke's "Drink A Beer", so let's get back on topic, please. Thanks!

I think having Chris Stapleton sing with him on the CMA's was a good move by Luke. Songwriters singing their own work gives it extra "soul" and a genuine feel, in my opinion. I've been watching Chris sing "Amanda" at the Grand Ole Opry (it's on youtube) and that dude would bring soul to anything.
I'm not a huge fan of Luke as an artist. That said, this is the best song I've heard him release in years, and I'll be glad to see it make its way up the charts.

I was excited to see that Luke had Chris up there to sing with him, since his background vocals are so prominent on "Drink A Beer". But I'm pretty sure that 95% of the viewing audience had no idea that was Chris Stapleton or that he wrote the song. Probably just wondered who the guy hiding his face under the ugly hat was.

I REALLY like this song. It's almost like the Luke of days gone by. I've missed that Luke tremendously.
In regards to the "I Drive Your Truck" comparison and I REALLY like that song as well, I love the production on Luke's song much better. There were parts of IDYT that kind of annoyed me (the banging on the piano). Both songs are very deep and emotional for me, DAB is much more pleasing to my ears.

Not surprisingly, this had a huge week, up over 4.3 million AI and 59-34*. I could see this being the biggest hit of Luke's career when all is said and done. He's had a few big hits, but not one that stands out as a 'career hit'. This will change that, I think.

Huge move on the chart this week, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this get a Single and/or Song of the Year nomination at the ACM's and/or CMA's next year. I don't think it's exactly *that* good (in regards to the songwriting), but much like Miranda's "Over You", this is going to connect with a lot of people. Plus, Luke is at the top of his game right now. I'd say "I'm going on a limb here", but I don't really believe I am actually going out on a limb when I say that I believe this song will be one of the biggest hits of Luke's career. I don't think that's a very risky prediction for me to make at all. "Drink A Beer" will leave much more of an impact than silly songs like "That's My Kind Of Night" do (and 'silly' is really too kind of a word to describe that one). This is definitely a song I can root for.

This is definitely a song I can root for. Definitely. Tie in the personal connection (like "Over You"), even though Luke didn't write it, and I think this is a force to be reckoned with in the Single/Song categories next year. At least it's happening with a pretty good song.

I'm going to root for this song at the award shows, simply for Chris Stapleton's sake (and also because, if this song does well, perhaps Luke will wind up recording more songs with substance in the future, and fewer songs like TMKON). It's a crying shame, imo, that Stapleton's "What Are You Listening To" wasn't at least a top 20 hit. If I could have my way, that would've been a multi-week #1. I don't think "Drink A Beer" is Chris' best work and it's not nearly as good as WAYLT, but it is still pretty good and if its success can help Chris, then I'm all for it.

It seems a bit ironic that Luke is an artist I find notorious for rehashing clichéd songs over and over, which I really don't care for, but the only 2 singles I like from him have "Trucks" and "Beer" in their titles. Go figure. Anyway, this song is just tearing up the charts right now, with massive daily gains on Mediabase.

Luke is absolutely on fire, as "Drink A Beer" moves 34-20* in its third week. Outside of a lead single (or second single with a deal), I can't remember a single that has moved this quickly.

This is so much better than his last two singles. It's a welcome change of pace for Luke Bryan this era. I can get behind this one. Hopefully the era yields more good single choices (Roller Coaster, Dirt Road Diaries) and this isn't an anomaly.

Love this song, I just hope we don't have a song that will peak really quickly and fall off the chart in under 15 weeks and then be quickly forgotten. Hopefully it can take a slower climb in top 20 instead of a quick climb and fall.

Yeah, this is shaping up to be a single of epic proportions, and possibly a career song (as you mentioned earlier in the thread). The story of Luke losing both his brother and sister makes this song all the more powerful and connective.

That personal story is where it'll likely really connect with some people, especially why it resonates with Luke Bryan so much.

Up 14 spots on billboard and 19 spots on mediabase!.....Wow! This is gonna be absolutely huge for Luke. I'd be shocked if this wasn't a multi week #1 hit and one of the biggest singles on the 2014 year end chart.
And after "Drink A Beer", they have "Roller Coaster", "Play It Again", and "Dirt Road Diary" to choose from and by then they will already be three singles in. Talk about on fire.

^ Those would be the best three singles. This era would actually play out quite wonderfully if they were to be able to release all of those after DAB peaks. It would almost make up for TMKON.

Does anybody think that Luke will sing "Drink A Beer" at the AMA's or will he sing "That's My Kinda Night"? I'm really hoping for DAB.

I'm liking this one better than any single Luke's put out since "Rain Is A Good Thing" but it still feels a little weak to me. I'd love it about 100% better if they weren't honouring the deceased with a beer.
My friend Josephine put it best I think....
After the first chorus: "so did one of his buddies die in a parking lot party? Is that why they drink beer?"

That doesn't make any sense about dying in a parking lot (and yes I get the Lee Brice song reference - I still don't get what your friend is saying). Anyway, many guys bond over drinking beers and having a beer in honor of a friend who has passed makes perfect sense in my world.

Even with all these party-oriented songs about drinking beer on today's country radio, this is definitely a perfectly acceptable way of using a lyric about beer as well. In other words, I don't think the consumption of beer in this song is used in a nonsensical or disrespectful way. It's not as if the song would've been more appropriate if it had been "Drink a Sprite" or something.

having a beer in honor of a friend who has passed makes perfect sense in my world. Unless you lost that friend because of a drunk driver... then alcohol can become a sensitive subject.

I definitely think the hook "drink a beer" is corny and detracts from the depth of the song. I don't care how passionately Luke sings this or what the theme is, I just can't be heavily moved by a song with such a hook. I guess this is how a ballad about death with a weak melody can be successful on today's country radio stations... by tossing in a common country theme.

I see many here rooting for this song and I have been biting my tongue the past couple of weeks. I no doubt understand the strong connection one might have with this song. It has to do more with my personal dislike for songs ranging from "Live LIke You Were Dying" to "I Drive Your Truck," as two small examples. Others might include George's "You'll Be There" as another, however that song came along at a time in my life that hit me hard. That being said, I'm just not sure I'm going to be able to actually listen to this on the radio without hitting the button.
