I'm trying to picture what this will sound like and I'm hoping it'll be something in the vain of Quicksand"Quicksand" is really good and I was so disappointed it wasn't included on any physical version of Circus. I mean, really? Anyway, I hope "Perfume" could have a similar vain to "Shadow", despite I really love "Everytime" as well. Question: downtempo = ballad?ETA: Since Larry called it a ballad, I assume the term is the same.
think pink. better keep the OP/thread title pretty like I would have if they had stayed unmerged ;) She hasn't commented anything today, so I think she would be stoked when she finds out that she has a Britney thread (on CHR/Pop). can you please put perfume in quote pleaseI second this. Also, the link in the OP doesn't work

It's a ballad? Uh oh. Brit hasn't had a ballad hit in a decade so we all should be very cautious with our expectations here. Hope it pulls an Everytime though.

I'll predict a #21 peak, solely based on the first single performance and the fact that it's a ballad. Fact is, Britney ballads don't get higher than that with the exception of Everytime. I'm so stoked she's releasing a ballad second though. I bet it's phenomenal.

Everyone will love it when it is released, but when it doesn't hit number one on iTunes everyone will cry and say the song sucks and on to single three, and call it a flop, britney won't perform it until the album is released, instead of performing it on a big audience event she'll perform it on a low rated morning and late night show, she will look stiff and awkward.
That said I love work bitch, and I'm pissed she did not do a performance.

Please let's not say that she is coming to snatch all wigs now cuz we all saw her wig being violently snatched during the release of Work Bitch :( (except the video release she owned it of course)
Not a fan of ballads in general but Britney ballads are top notch in my opinion <3

She hasn't had a ballad hit in a decade because she hasn't released a ballad in a decade. Criminal was a ballad. Also there was Someday, but that was kind of a throwaway release anyways. All I'm saying is only 3 ballad hits out of 40 singles isn't the best sign. And Sometimes and From the Bottom of My Broken Heart were only minor hits. Her only true ballad hit remains Everytime.

'Criminal' is 108 bpm. Ciara's 'Overdose' is 107 bpm... is that a ballad?

I hope this is an electro-ballad. Despite "Quicksand" could fit here, I forgot another one. I mean, if "Perfume" pulls a "I Run Away"... :o She hasn't had a ballad hit in a decade because she hasn't released a ballad in a decade. I could agree that "Someday (I Will Understand)" is a ballad, but "Criminal" isn't, as Kunt/Dope told you before. It's a midtempo, as well as "Sometimes", "Born to Make You Happy" and "Lucky". The only ballads, I think, Britney has released as singles are: "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart", "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know", "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman", "Everytime" and "Someday (I Will Understand)", being the latter only released in some European countries, and as you said, her only hit in this category remains to be "Everytime".

Can't f**king wait. All the hype Britney and her team have been putting on this song from the get-go has me pumped for this. It being her first ballad single in 10 years alone has me beyond thrilled.

From the Bottom of my Broken Heart was only released in the US but it did decent, reaching #14. Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know did pretty bad in the US (Urban domination, no physical single) but it reached #9 on the European H100. Someday was only released in a couple European countries, but it went top 10/15 in most of them. (#6 in Hungary ) I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman flopped hard in the US (CC ban era), but went top 10 in most European countries (#2 in the UK for example). Everytime actually only peaked at #15 in the US, less than FTBOMBH. It did really good in Europe though (just like the rest of her ballads). So I think it could do well! She's no Katy Perry, her ballads performed similar to her other songs, moderate hits. They just don't have iconic outfits or choreography attached to them so people forget.

These are billboard peaks though and changing chart methodology greatly affected these peaks. For example, Everytime peaked at #4 on pop and had a much larger impact than FTBOMBH, the latter peaking higher on the Hot 100 due to physical single sales and how they were counted. Everytime remains her only successful ballad on US radio.

Everytime remains flawless. I loved it in 2004 and still love it in 2013. Glad Perfume is getting released as a single. I hope this song can burry the "Britney can't sing" chatter to rest, once and for all.

With the record company saying we will be surprised at her vocal performance on this one -- I am hoping to hear vocals like that on her beautiful cover of "You Got It All" that sadly never made it above a bonus track.
If it has "Everytime" vocals I don't think this will go anywhere (and no one will be impressed). I want to her show everyone she can sing. Not because she has to, but because she can. Her previous ballad releases haven't been good songs in general / 4th singles at the time, a good ballad can chart. If they just allowed her to use her voice as it was meant to be.

clear channel ban? when did that ever happen to Britney and if it did happen... why? Britney went with Concerts West for her Dream Within A Dream tour instead of Clear Channel (mostly due to the Crossroads movie as CW handles movie theaters as well). Clear Channel didn't like that and punished artists who did not go with their company instead by axing down their spins on Clear Channel owned stations. Britney was one of the ones effected during the time (2001).
