I hate that she ate it on Saturday Night Live, although it's not like she'll never live that down or anything. Still, imagine how much bigger she could've been by now if she'd nailed it?
She's done great for herself though, and I think she's revving up for a major impact next era. Here's hoping, anyway.
'Once Upon a Dream' is absolutely one of the best things she's ever done. Her tone is just... man. It's something else.

While watching the Grammys Sunday night, I was thinking how unfair it is that Lorde was nominated for (and won) major awards and was asked to perform while Lana has mostly been ignored, and I realized that it all comes down to politics. When 'Video Games' and 'Born to Die' first came out, Lana was generally seen as cool and fresh and edgy, but after she bombed on SNL, it became "in" to hate on her and she still hasn't completely recovered from that. Had she done well on SNL (or had it not happened at all), I have no doubt that she would have received a lot of Grammys love both this year (with Paradise) and last ( Born to Die).

Yeah I feel like she should be where Lorde is right now in terms of mainstream acceptance and awards loving. It annoys me that there are some people still holding stuff like SNL and her having fake lips against her-seriously, if her having some form of plastic surgery bothers you then you need to stop paying attention to celebrities in general because I can guarantee almost all of your favs have had a little work too. It all ties into her being seen as fake though. Honestly, I don't even care. I think it is simplistic to call her fake for those reasons, but even if she is the most fake person out there she still created one of the most beautiful and somehow still exciting bodies of pop music over the course of the last few years. I don't care what you are as long as you provide genuinely great cds.
But I guess I can't complain that much because ultimately (somehow) the cd(s) sold a lot. I know she did well worldwide and she has very strong word of mouth reaching people not forever tainted by SNL. I think it also speaks to the strength of the material since a lot of her sales have not relied on overwhelming amounts of airplay or tons of what we would consider traditional promotion. Though, she does own videos, doesn't she?
Excited to hear that Ultraviolence is dark!

I don't begrudge Lorde's success because she's a talented young artist who came out with a terrific album, but it's exactly the level of success I hoped for for Lana (people that pegged her early on as the next Adele were reaching for the stars). I still can't believe some remix of "Summertime Sadness"--a great song but not nearly the best that album has to offer--is what finally got her a hit.

I will say that, sonically, she's more ADELE than she is Lorde. The latter was far more approachable as far as mainstream success goes. The comparisons to the former were probably made in light of ADELE's success-- not expecting Lana to be as successful so much as thinking she'd have a shot now that the gates were open. What most people weren't counting on was that ADELE was kind of a fluke who happened to benefit greatly from the hype machine and the sensationalism that followed. Lana only had the sound, and that didn't cut it. Granted, her's is arguably an edgier, poppier approach; but it wasn't going to carry itself.
Anyway, a darker album sounds almost impossible, but I'll take it. As manufactured as she is, she seems like she has a general idea of what she wants to do as an artist. Her campy, theatrical bulls**t may not get her any hits (unassisted, anyway), but she'll stay a hot commodity on the blogs that matter if she really can outdo her Born to Die and Paradise characters.

When I first heard about her I was literally rolling my eyes cause I believed that she was going to be introduced as the American Adele and she seemed like a cheap way of taking advantage of the cashcow Adele had become. But after I became obsessed with her, I saw no similarities at all with Adele. The only thing that is similar in their music is that it's generally down-tempo but that's it.
Also, I don't think she's manufactured in the typical sense. The femme fatale persona might be (as is every pop girl's persona) but her sound is definitely genuine, original and what she wanted it to be. The vision of the 'Lana Del Rey' artist/character was created by Lizzy Grant herself and I refuse to believe otherwise. I don't get why she gets more flack for being 'fake' than the rest of today's female artists like Ke$ha, Gaga, etc. who all have a very distinct image carrying them along.

And the award goes to Cedric Gervais as the remixer. The original performer doesn't get an award for that category, unfortunately :/ He did thank her in his speech and call the original song a "masterpiece," though.

She said "Ultraviolence" will be released May 1. Ha, was just coming to post this exact video. You're so fast Darrion "It's so good that it made me forget about the last record. I'm just really in love with it." Anyway yea: can we talk about how personable, down to earth, and attractive she comes across in that video?

I wonder if Coachella will serve as a Ultraviolence showcase. I'm dying for a US tour to be announced already. She's paid us in dust ever since 2012.

I wonder if we'll get a single beforehand. Either way, I'm not buying anything until we get a press release of some sort.

April 15 - Comerica Theatre, Phoenix
April 18: Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, San Francisco
