^ I don't think anybody here said "Ghost Town" would be a big hit, but rather some including me wanted that released second because it's the far superior song to "Beachin'". Unfortunately the video trilogy pretty much made RCA stick to their guns to release "Beachin'" second and "Ghost Town" third. I don't think that "Ghost Town" will be a huge #1 hit for Jake but it certainly just got helped by the success so far of "Beachin'".
I was not a fan of this album either but there were a couple good tracks on it ("Drivin' All Night", "What We Ain't Got") and "Ghost Town" was clearly one of them. "Beachin'" is head and shoulders the worst track on Days Of Gold and IMO the worst of his career, which I thought would be darn near impossible considering he did release "Eight Second Ride".

I actually think "Ghost Town" could easily go #1, it has a very similar style to "The One That Got Away", and would probably play well heading into the fall. Out of all the songs on the album left, I see "Life of the Party" being the BIGGEST hit left. I think that one in particular would sell really well digitally (kind of reminds me of "Drunk on a Plane", just not as original of a story, but still done quite well), and would probably be another #1 in the making (Assuming "Beachin'" peaks at #1).

I expect "Beachin'" to hit #1 in early July. I think "Ghost Town" is a strong song and I think it would be an easy #1 on the heels of "Beachin'". Otherwise, I agree that the Days Of Gold album was largely a disappointment, especially compared to Barefoot Blue Jean Night.

What I meant was I didn't stick up for "Ghost Town" to be the second single because I thought it had smash written all over it, but rather it's a much better song than "Beachin'" IMO. I should have made that more clear though, so my bad. I could see "Ghost Town" going #1 as well, but not going to go out of my way to predict it. I think it does have that great balance of a lost love's memory story with a upbeat enough feel and melody that will resonate with listeners.

The amazing thing about "Beachin'" is it has sold this well without any big awards show performance, or even a performance on American Idol or The Voice. The music video had already been out for two months before being released to radio. I haven't even been seeing any adds for it in the aircheck magazines. Also looks like it has a good chance to dethrone "Play It Again" on the Hot Country Songs chart as well.

Ghost Town reminds me of Lady A's Goodbye Town but I'm not really a fan of Jake's voice so I just don't connect with it. It may very well be a future #1 but I just don't connect with it and it doesn't really resonate with me.

Also looks like it has a good chance to dethrone "Play It Again" on the Hot Country Songs chart as well. I'm not surprised there haven't been any ads for it. The ads are often only put out for brand new singles or to request conversions or more airplay for songs that are struggling, and "Beachin'" has had a pretty smooth run. RCA also doesn't typically put out a lot of ads. They did quite a few for Sara's "Slow Me Down" and they're trying to build more awareness for Love & Theft's new single, but Jake hasn't needed any sort of push. Other labels will put out ads to really reinforce momentum (such as MCA with the success that George's IGAC has now been seeing) but I think in this case "Beachin'" is such a reaction record and a strong seller that RCA doesn't really need to put out any ads for it, as radio PD's are very well aware of the situation. ETA: "Beachin'" just surpassed Gold status this past week. It went from 48k sold 2 weeks ago to 58k this past week, bringing total sales to 512,000. www.roughstock.com/blog/country-chart-news-the-top-30-digital-singles-for-may-28-2014

Otherwise, I agree that the Days Of Gold album was largely a disappointment, especially compared to Barefoot Blue Jean Night. Yeah, I still think that the unreleased tracks of "Heaven", "Settin' The World On Fire", "Wide Awake", and "Journey Of Your Life" are all stronger than most of the songs on Days Of Gold. The first 3 songs I mentioned seem radio-friendly enough to have been potential #1 hits. Barefoot Blue Jeans Night was just a tremendous album, with only 1 or 2 tracks that I wasn't crazy about.

Kind of strange-I heard Summer Jam for the first time ever today on my Clear Channel station (who doesn't lightly play non-hits).
Now that Beachin is destined for top 5 or even #1 is there any chance they are giving this some spins to get another 'summer song' in from Jake?
It would seem odd to go back to a prior EP for a single-but I wonder.

It's been bouncing around the 60's and low 50's on Mediabase, which is kind of what it did last year. I believe it's only a handful of stations. I know the Minneapolis station spun it a ungodly amount in 2013 as well as this year. KEEY (Minneapolis) has spun "Summer Jam" 32 times this past week alone. They aren't going back to release that. If stations want to play it this summer that's their decision. "Beachin'" won't peak until July, so by the time "Ghost Town" gets released (which it most certainly will), it wont chart till about August or so, with a late fall/early winter peak.

Yeah, it's just been getting some unsolicited airplay at a handful of stations, simply because it's a summer song and because FGL--and to a lesser extent Jake--are so popular right now. "Summer Jam" charted on Billboard in 2012 but it was never an official single.

Yes, my thoughts were similar but it was just strange to hear my particular station who never shows any individuality at playing songs that aren't official singles and especially hits so it made me say hmmm. Also surprising since stations have so many choices (seems like this year especially) for 'summer' songs. The song caught my ear and although FGAL has fallen way down on my list after Cruise (which I liked) because of the repetitive nature of their songs/vocals I have to say that I really liked that one for some reason-Jake sounded good on it. Wow, KEEY :O what the heck; that is almost 5 times daily!

This song has passed "Play It Again" on the iTunes Country chart for top selling country song. Is also #16 overall. Should hit #1 on Billboard Airplay in 3 weeks, following "Beat of the Music" and "Lettin' the Night Roll". Question is, will it settle for just one week on top, or go for two with Blake Shelton right behind him? Should be interesting to watch.

Blake actually jumped ahead of "Beachin'" on Mediabase this morning so I'm not sure if Jake can hit the top spot before he does. I'm a bit surprised that with "Automatic" and "Play It Again" free-falling this week, "Beachin'" hasn't seen very many power conversions. I thought for sure with 2 songs really falling that Jake would take a lot of those spins and fill up those vacancies a bit. Blake has certainly been getting a ton of conversions this week. I just thought Jake would be getting those big gains as well. I am sure that "Beachin'" will still get at least a week at #1 next month...I just don't know whether it will be before or after Blake.

They certainly shouldn't let Blake jump them because that song looks like a multiple week #1, especially with it being so young on the charts too. This could be a similar situation to "Play it Again" blocking "This is How We Roll". I don't know if Beachin' could wait it out that long.

Maybe Blake will indeed get a couple weeks at the top spot but I don't think it will come at the expense of "Beachin'". I'll bet we see big gains for Jake beginning Monday or Tuesday. Brett should start falling next week and so I think we'll see a lot of power conversions for "Beachin'". Also, I looked at the charts closer and even though Blake did jump ahead of Jake in MB points today, Jake's still quite far ahead in audience. He might stay ahead of Blake on Billboard come Monday and again, I wouldn't be surprised to see Jake take some big strides toward #1 next week.

Jake Owen takes over #1 at MediaBase this morning. Looks like a fifth chart topper for him.

Wow! This is not good at all. Not very catchy, sure to get pretty annoying after a few listens, more of that repulsive country rap that FGL will start submerging us with soon...argh, it's drivin' me nuts! What happened to you, Jake? I enjoyed your last album, but nothing's enticing me this time around. Chart-wise, I don't see it out-peaking "Days of Gold" nor lasting as long. If my prediction does come to fruition, I hope that two under-performing singles won't hinder his future since he had four #1's from the BBJN era. The only good song from that video trilogy he uploaded a while back was "Ghost Town", which at least had some kind of meaning behind it. I am now eating my words along with a bunch of dirt as this is about to become another chart-topper for him.

Loooove this song, I think this has to be my favorite sing-along song of the summer. It really couldn't have had a smoother ride to the top, so congrats to Jake. I'm glad the relatively lackluster performance of Days of Gold (which I actually grew to love after seeing him perform it live twice) didn't hurt him one bit.
BBJN is surely a tough act to follow (such a great album), but this album has really grown on me. I'm excited to see what the next single is.

"Beachin" was tracking NOW at #1 on Billboard's Real Time Tracker for Saturday's update but I never got a chance to post the tracker information but Jake is tracking at #1 with Justin Moore's "Home Sweet Home" as the greatest gainer.

Disappointed this was the song to put him back at No. 1, because while I generally like his voice and enjoyed the singles from his last era pretty well, I find this song totally awful. I can't change the station fast enough when this comes on. I'm glad they'll be able to move on to something (hopefully) better now that this is peaking at least.

We've had a ton of extremely underwhelming number one singles over the past 18-20 months; no doubt about it, and that's really disheartening.

I'm glad to see Jake recapture his momentum that was lost on "Days of Gold". Maybe his label can treat it similarly to "The Outsiders" like Eric Church's team did, just a single meant to make some "buzz", while "Beachin'" was really the go to opening single, much like "Give Me Back My Hometown" was. "Beachin'" definitely earned it's trip to #1 though, the airplay had some steady gains with some big gains weeks, the sales were extremely strong, and even the music video had a decent amount of views. I'm excited to see how the next 2 singles perform, because unlike everyone else, I actually think that album is pretty deep single wise, and there's many future hits on it.

...for as much as I lash out against the current state of Country, I have to say that I genuinely love this song. Not surprised that it went #1 at all. Honestly, for me, he did the summer beach anthem better than someone like Kenny Chesney ever has, and that's usually his calling.

Thomas Rhett's 'Sorry For Partyin' (15 spins this week) is just one example of the decisions made by KEEY PD Gregg Swedberg as it relates to choosing tunes to add to his playlist after he indicted Music Row a couple of years ago for putting out such crappy music, and particularly by several format superstars; 'We're going to make our own hits' were his exact words.
He's also added a few non-singles from Carrie Underwood and other stars to his playlist, and has really pushed singles from siblings of format stars such as Josh Kelley, brother of Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum.
'Roller Coaster' is already up to 34 spins on KEEY which is almost certainly the most of any station in the country, so he's definitely not tied to being pulled around by the nose by Nashville's label execs and songwriters as it relates to programming choices; good for him.
