ABC Slates 'MNF' Halftime Highlights Package

Singer Tim McGraw will provide background music for a new highlights package that will appear at halftime of "Monday Night Football" games on ABC this season.

The highlights represent a return to the earliest days of "MNF," when Howard Cosell would show key plays from Sunday games during halftime of the broadcast, which is entering its 35th and final season on ABC.

Mr. McGraw will be reworking the lyrics of some of his hit songs for ABC. The highlights will in part replace the "You've Been Sacked" feature from last season, in which NFL players punked their colleagues.

ABC Sports and ESPN are also planning two documentaries on the history of "Monday Night Football," which will move to ESPN for the 2006 season.

Even more big news on Tim that could mean a lot for him, since the small more independent label Curb has been the only label Tim has had his whole career.

Tim McGraw has grown exponentially in the last few years, into superstar singer, award-winning record producer, ratings winning star of TV specials and now critically acclaimed Hollywood actor. None of this has gone unnoticed by higher entertainment industry powers.

WORD IS that Tim is in serious negotiations with the producers of his upcoming film “My Friend Flicka” for Tim to do the soundtrack album along with The Warren Brothers and others in the Tim McGraw family.

EVEN MORE POTENTIALLY EARTH SHAKING - There is also speculation as to Tim having his own label (in concert with a major). McGraw has reportedly been approached by every label to form his own imprint. Unlike others that want to do their own thing, word is this is a serious proposition that goes far beyond a vanity label most artists form.


IMO that may be why he is releasing his 10th album sooner that many fans thought, it will be his 10th career album and will fulfill his  contract with Curb. Not sure how I feel about it, but would love to see him a on major label that would give him more respect.

Curb hass kept him from doing things he has wanted to in the past. They don't let him do any duets unless it is Faith or another artist on Curb's label. They don't let him contribute songs to other albums unless they are directly related to Curb.

Time and time again he has been stopped from doing that. Tim had a song recorded to go on that XMAS album called a Acoustic XMAS, artist like Alison Krauss, Patty Loveless was on it. Curb pulled his song at the last minute.

Tim had recored a song with his good buddy Darryl Dodd a few years ago called Honky Tonk Champagne that was to go on Darryl's album "Pearl". It was a great song. Curb wouldn't allow it, the copy of the song out of the blue got leaked to Texas radio and actually charted.

Tim was orginally a part of the Warren Brothers's song, "Sell Alot Of Beer" and it was sent to radio and was getting airplay. Curb threaten legal action if they played it, so it was pulled.

Tim on Kenny's last two albums(not the island one), did background vocals on them, one song on each. He had to do it on the side and was not allowed any mention on the liner notes that he was on the songs. Usually they say, artist courtersy of so and so label. Curb would not allowed it, so Tim is on both albums with no mention.

I've noticed that Tim doesn't show up on the various tribute albums the way Vince Gill, Brooks and Dunn, Travis Tritt, and Patty Loveless do. Maybe Curb has been the reason why all along, and he does have respect for country music history. The only time I've noticed him on a tribute album was on Asleep at the Wheel's Ride With Bob [Wills] album, where he did a really good job on Milk Cow Blues. As I've often said, I don't often like Tim's singing, but he sounds really good on that one.

Curb doesn't allow it, unless they are some how is involved and will profit. Tim has mention this in fact. The song with Darryl Dodd was great and all set to go on his album, when Curb nixed it. Darryl did a interview a little less than two years ago when his album came out and talked about it. How his buddy recorded the song with him on the side, and it was all set to be on his album, but Curb refused to allow it. He joked in the interview how the song suddenly showed up in the mail at KPLX. They played it alot and it charted on the Texas charts till Curb made them pull it.

Tim is a very loyal person to all that work for him and help him in his career, but he has made these offhand comments in the past that were not flattering to Curb. We all know how mad he was with Curb when they released his GH before he thought he was at the point. That is one of the reason there was NO new singles on tbe album, Tim did not have any part in putting the package together. Not that it has been a failure, it has sold over 4.7 million copies since its release, was the top selling country catalog album the last two years and even this week is #4. All that with NO new singles to get fans to buy it that have allhis albums.

I didn't know they treated him that badly. I did know that they pushed his studio album in favor of a GH package (did that to Jo Dee too), but to not allow him on other artists' projects? I have never heard anything good of Mike Curb and his label and do agree that it wouldn't be a bad move on Tim's part to leave. However, to make his own label, or to join with Toby, may be a risk at this point. He is riding so high right now, you don't want to bite the hand that's feeding you.

Kyhomeg--wasn't "How Bad Do You Want It" supposed to be involved with football last year? They filmed a video and everything. In fact, scroll back in time at these boards and you shall find we all thought it was a next single. What happened?

The song was never picked to be a single, it was used as a promotion thing with football. Football played it at games, and I heard the song at times during some of the televised games. It was never officially released to radio.

Tim said from day one, when I first heard him sing DOJ at a concert in November 2003 that he was going to record it and he would release it as a single. It was more important to him personally for that song to be release.

This thing with football this season they will have Tim doing some of his big hits reworked to fit football and they will be playing them at halftime during a a segment,  on every Monday night game.

As for ther label nobody said anything about Toby. I 100% don't think anything regarding Tim has anything to do with Toby. Don't see that happening at all, their personalities are as different as night and day.

Don't know what this means, but I know his contract after the 10th album is complete, but  Tim is very grateful for all Curb has done for him, and whatever he does will be done with 100% class, because that is who Tim is, 100% class in all he does. You never see him bashing or trashing another artist that is 100% not him.

I don't know if that article means he will sign with a major label and have his own imprint. I know he has his own pubulshing company and he also started a publishing company just for the Warren Brothers to help them get their music out there as writers. So maybe that is what it means, I do know without a doubt there isn't probadly a major label out there that isn't trying to get him, if he doesn't sign with Curb again. My question what will Curb lose, their big bread winner for many years.

He actually said it over a year ago, it is jsut now that he is getting close to his contract ending with Curb. Also who said he was starting his own label, Tim didn't say that and neither did that article. Like I said Tim fans that go his site have heard about this for a long time now, what he would like, but he couldn't really go broadcasting it since he is still under contract with Curb. Tim wouldn't do that he has to much class and loyality to go bashing his label like someone else we know.

How is he changing the words, they will still have Hank's song as the opening. This has nothing to do with the opening number for the Monday Night Football game. Do you watch football on TV?

During halftime they don't play Hank's song that is the opening number. Last year during half time they did this segment called, "You've Been sacked" with players.

This year the last year on ABC, they are going to go back in time and do a segment like they used to do with the great Howard Cosell, showing highlights of Sunday's games and during that Tim songs will be played. They will be different since they will be to fit football.


This has nothing to do with Hank so how you got that I'll never know.

Thanks for the VERY interesting read on the manner in which his GH CD was dumped on the market with no new singles on it; I can't remember if it was released after 'Set This Circus Down' or his 'Dancehall Doctors' CD, but now I know why relations between his label and himself weren't very good at the time.

I certainly salute him for releasing 'Drugs Or Jesus' as a single as well; the man DOES have his convictions!!!

If he does leave, Curb will undoubtedly continue to make lots of money from his catalog sales, which are still very potent; most country fans know that when you buy a CD by any given artist, you will undoubtedly get LOTS of songs that will never be released as singles. His last five CDs (starting with 'Everywhere') have all had LOTS more great songs that were never release as singles, and some adventurous stations out there which play lots of those cuts (like KZLA here in LA playing 'Telluride' twice a day at least) have certainly been very good to him, and will continue to do so.

When you've had 22 #1 singles in the past 11 years, and your current CD is among your strongest to date, there's certainly no reason to quit making music, even if you have to change labels to do things that REALLY mean a lot to you.

Tim originally wanted Set This Circus Down to be released for the holiday season in 2000. But Curb opted to release the Greatest Hits at that time with no new cuts. They then subsequently released Circus the following April. Although Tim wanted his studio CD up for holiday sale, it was a great move on Curb's part because that album stayed in the top 20 for a bazillion weeks after being released and I believe is Tim's best selling album to date.

Now, the shelving of Jo Dee's CD for a Greatest Hits is another story....

CURB has done a lot of unfair things to their "Big Three" artists (JoDee, LeAnn, Tim)

Although all three have seen a lot of success with CURB so maybe they are doing something right. All three artists were definitly risks when signed to the label. Tim was just another cowboy hat male singer. His first CD did nothing, God Bless them for giving him the benefit of the doubt with NOT A MOMENT TO SOON. Since then he's been huge. LeAnn was really young which was risky, and other labels such as MCA passed on LeAnn and then her debut sold 6mil. Jo Dee must have seemed risky cause when she first came out she didn't stand out that much, she wrote little and her voice didn't seem like a sure bet. Now I have seen all three live and they are some of my favorites.

I still feel that 'Set This Circus Down' remains Tim's best CD to date; I'm also glad that KZLA plays 'Telluride' at least twice a day, and 'Things Change' and 'Angel Boy' as well.

Talk about a CD LOADED with potential singles......WOW!!!!!!!!

I believe there's an event entitled 'Stars of Tomorrow' which is held in the spring in Nashville, and Tim performed two songs when he his shot. The second song he performed, 'Don't Take The Girl', brought the house down, and made it pretty clear to the folks at Curb that he was going to be HUGE.

11 years and 22 #1 singles later, and having obliterated the all-time record for most weeks at #1 (over 70 in BB), he still is.

Just wondering where you got this "over 70 in BB" figure. I've got Tim with 64 weeks at #1 on Billboard, and in 8th place all-time.

He is in 8th place in all time but he is #1 in the modern system that have. Think it goes back to 1990. He may be #8 place of all time, but Tim is not finished by a long shot, he will make that Top 5 one day.

OMG - you ARE kidding right?  I'm NOT the one that is defensive when it comes to your precious Timmy!  You are the one that jumps down everyone's throat when they don't fall over everything the precious Mr. Faith Hill does the way you do!   The only argument you EVER come up with is "he is #28 this week."  "He is #2 this week"  blah, blah, blah - then you ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have to throw in a cheap comment about Alan Jackson or Toby Keith or Shania Twain.  If you can't argue logically,  oops sorry - forgot who I was talking to here!

And the cold hard fact is that Alan's album is just as good, and, because he never crossed into the mixed crowd, he doesn't pull big numbers. How much did Faith open with before "Faith"? I bet it's less than Alan's latest effort.

My reply regarding Tim's 70+ weeks at #1 in BB came from "After Midnite' host Blair Garner when Tim broke that threshhold with ''Live Like You Were Dying'.

Obviously there have numerous changes in BB's chart methodology over the years, and at radio as well. The days of a song hitting #1 at any given radio station and falling COMPLETELY off that stations chart the following week are long gone, to say the least.

Gotcha. Are you sure that Blair Garner stated that it was "70 #1 weeks on Billboard", or just 70 weeks at #1 in general, with the assumption that he's counting all charts, big and small? If you were to go with the 10 weeks that LLYWD spent at #1 on R&R instead of the 7-week stay that it had on Billboard, and additional weeks that might have resulted from other #1 songs getting more weeks on R&R than Billboard, then I could see Blair coming up with that 70-week total fairly easy.

Yet another reason why life is so much simpler when you only pay attention/give legitimacy to Billboard.

Blair has always cited BB when making announcements about various chart accomplishments, such as 'You'll Be There' becoming the SEVENTIETH top 10 single for George Strait.

I know that it's MUCH easier for a song to spend FAR more weeks at # in BB than at R&R due to the respective methodologies which R&R & BB utilize.

Although Tim has had 22 #1s @ R&R vs. 21 @ BB, those 21 charttoppers at Billboard spent far more weeks collectively at #1 than those which hit the top at R&R did; his stupendous CD 'Everywhere' had FOUR #1s (BB) which collectively spent over TWENTY weeks at #1; the FIVE #1 singles  from that CD spent only 13 weeks at #1 in R&R.

That's unquestionably why 'Live Like You Were Dying' wound up #1 for 2004 @ BB, but didn't make RT&Rs top 5.
