They initially announced Blow for pop but I think the positive reaction to XO had them quickly change plans. I think it could be her first top ten since Sweet Dreams.

I don't get the love for XO :/. Of course since it's Beyonces 1st single from a *mega hyped game changing album* (in the way it was released) not talking about the songs lol, it's going to get instant, huge airplay. Even if she released the album in the traditional way the 1st single would of still gotten huge airplay #s. In this case, she'll get even more. But, I don't hear this song being a massive hit in the long run. Guess it's basically competing w/ Dark Horse now (the song that never stopped selling for months even w/out it being a single) lol. Although some admitted it, should've just been single #2! Seems (just like Thinking Of You) people and radio quickly forgave Katy/moved on and I think it's gonna easily pick up the momentum she had during Roar. XO is all an unknown as it's brand new. Unlike Beyonces album execution which was intentional, w/ DH 'seemed' it was all unintentional. Initially seemed like it was just a teaser/promo or whatever lol. 'That' ended up being a very smart move. It stayed in the iTunes to 20 for months and her record company clearly saw how much it clicked so did the natural, smart move by making it a single. I feel they actually didn't plan on it being single #3 (if it didn't click like it did). Just shows, like Bey did w/ her album, 'teaser/promo' singles are still an effective strategy in deciding future singles- even if the record co. plays the role that isn't the case lol.

Honestly there are not really any obvious pop singles on Beyonce's album -- it's mostly that XO is the closest to that. Feels a bit like Halo (also written by Ryan Tedder).
I don't know that Beyonce is guaranteed huge airplay for anything. She didn't get huge airplay on anything from 4. She also doesn't seem to care about singles success, though -- I almost wonder if at this point she's like "label, you do whatever you want, I already filmed every video so you can promote whatever you want."

^I disagree... she has a few songs that might be mid-tier hits but there is nothing on this album like Single Ladies, Irreplaceable, Crazy In Love, etc.
Several songs could be successful on R&B radio though.

The album has maybe one or two pop hits on it. Not that that's a bad thing, because I doubt Beyoncé and her team really cares about pop hits at this point in her career. This album is ready to pump out those urban hits, though. Rhythmic should be all over about half of the album as well.

"XO," "Jealous," and maybe "Pretty Hurts" are the potential CHR/Pop singles from the album. Who knows where radio will be by summer though? Depending on what radio's playing then, she may be able to get away with something else. The album is fairly diverse.

I think Beyonce can get more pop hits from this album since pop radio has moved in a much more rhythmic direction recently. If they're playing stuff like Blurred Lines and Thrift Shop so much, they should be able to play most of Beyonce's album too.

This album is ready to pump out those urban hits, though. Rhythmic should be all over about half of the album as well. Get Funky, Blurred Lines, Suit and Tie, Thrift Shop, Holy Grail, Monster, and other urban sounding hits have been gaining traction. Additionally some of the tracks are straight up pop tracks and pop radio will play a JayZ and Bey track. The Urban hits Pour it Up and Love Song got unsolicited top 50 airplay last year... The sales of beys album say that pop radio can play the types of crossover records on Beys album. Even songs like Drunk in love and No Angel and Blow have heavy pop influences in them along with a somewhat retro feel all at the sametime. It isnt business as usual R&B music on her album. Bey's album is very much a crossover record. Everything sounding the same isnt good for pop radio listenership. If they arent careful theyll find themselves overplaying urban songs if they start losing market share to Urban/Rhythmic stations and Spotify. Pop radio needs balance Beyonce can give that to them and she has maintained her credibility despite 4's inability to generate any pop hits.

None of those songs sound as urban as Beyoncé's album. In fact, few of them even sound "urban" at all.

Do we think the monster can reach 2 million?
And do we think demons can see a resurgence or is it done?

None of those songs sound as urban as Beyoncé's album. In fact, few of them even sound "urban" at all. I think all those songs he listed sound urban influenced, but I think often the artist doing the song makes people think differently of it. Like if Miguel sang Get Lucky (and Daft Punk had nothing to do with the song), pop radio DJs would probably assume it's "too R&B/soul" for their stations without giving it much of a chance, but because Daft Punk are the lead artists on the song, it got airplay even on alternative and AC stations, and less urban airplay than it should've done. Kind of the same with Thrift Shop. Had Kanye or someone been rapping on that beat, its airplay would've looked completely different imo. Probably top 10 on urban, and in the #41-#50 region on pop, and no alternative airplay at all. I'm just waiting for the Stay remix by Florida Georgia Line feat 50 Cent to be the #1 song of 2014 lol. That would be something. I feel like 50 Cent has lost motivation though. In an interview earlier in the year he was saying that he'll probably never get another hit as big as In Da Club. This really shocked me, because for the past 10 years he's always been very cocky and seemed convinced he'll get a hit bigger than that lol.

None of those songs sound as urban as Beyoncé's album. In fact, few of them even sound "urban" at all. When those songs came out initially no one on here expected them to be hits at the levels that they were. NO ONE expected Blurred Lines to take off at all and the same goes for Thrift Shop. People are only claiming those songs for pop now that they've been massive successes. I guarantee had those songs flopped people would've said "It's Too Urban for Pop".

Em at #1 should be safe for a couple more weeks. Then it will be interesting. A 4 Week run at the Top will be good enough for me. Then Timber or Dark Horse will take over.

Dark Horse is one of Katy's best singles! It will be a big hit but a #1?... Interesting to watch.
