That title does not thrill me what so ever...it scares me actually, especially after the monstrosity that was The Outsiders

Please redeem yourself Eric after that last horrid one. You are so much better than that. Looking forward to this.

According to @broadwayonair on Twitter, his station is playing this hourly starting at 6 am Friday. Haven't researched to see if he's a clear channel station.

I think hearing the huge difference in style of these first two singles will really intrigue people and create major interest in the album, perhaps even by those that weren't planning on getting it after the Outsiders was released. carriekins, does broadwayonair's tweet suggest that the single will be released to radio this Friday, or is that just an independent station playing it early?

jaseboyhyde all of the ads for the song's release say 1/3/14, which is Friday.

Could be a continuation of Montgomery Gentry's My Town.

I'm almost certain it won't be a smalltown pride song.
Guys, this is Eric Church we're talking about. Has he ever been known to pander ("Love Your Love The Most" aside)?

^ Ugh. You'd think EC would want a top 5 hit after The Outsiders mess of a chart run...

I don't necessarily think that a Clear Channel deal will hurt this song's chart run. If anything, this might help Eric to regain his momentum more quickly than if he left the song to rise steadily on its own, since lately just about no one is immune to a slow climb up the charts.

After the polarizing nature of his last single, I don't think throwing the new single out there full blast is necessarily the best scenario. He's a big enough artist that he wouldn't have to worry about his single struggling to climb out of the gate imo. That said, I don't believe these deals are done at the request of the artist or label; I think CC just picks songs from time to time to give the hourly premiere treatment.

I'm happy I gave up listening to terrestrial radio. These CC deals are one of many reasons why it is so annoying now. I will listen to this song like I do any other new song, online, 1 time, and if I like it, buy it. If I don't, never have it forced on me by hourly by radio. Now if I had any local radio stations worth listening to I wouldn't have given it up. I know there are smaller stations that play a good mix of old and new, pop and traditional, but none around here.

This is terrible...wow, early front runner for worst single of the year. As above stated, no real chorus and I didn't really get the point of the lyrics to begin with. I don't understand why he has gone in this direction...radio has never been fully in love with him and he really has only had only one commercially successful album, and I'm not sure why his label is cool the stuff he has released.

Ha, my Twitter feed is obsessed with it. I've seen "phenomenal" and "perfect" used to describe it.
I'll listen later. I just can't bring myself to get excited about Eric Church.

I don't hate it. It's definitely not one of my favorites, but I still think it beats most of the singles released by the bro country artists. Definitely not up to par to anything from the Chief record, but it is much better than The Outsiders.

I really like Eric Church, but this song just seems to have no direction. And I agree with shaniabotwin, this isn't nearly as good as anything from his last album.
After hearing a couple snippets of "Dark Side", I'm a little surprised it wasn't the follow up single. Seems to be right up his alley...and a good fit for country radio.

I wouldn't call myself a super fan or anything, but I own Chief and have been to a concert. And this is easily the second worst single he had release (right after The Outsiders). Don't listen to your twitter feed; listen to Pulse, we be wiser haha

Well, I make my own decisions but I feel like Pulse gives me a better sense of what I'm getting into. I was a big Eric fan pre-Chief. Now I'm super indifferent.

The first 2 minutes paint a picture that will resonate with almost anyone regarding a long lost love who left her memories everywhere in the town in which he grew up. There's 2 verses worth of lyrics in that first part of the song. The Oooooh's really don't dominate the lyrics until the latter part of the song. I think there are lots of lyrics that will really bring back memories to folks. One that has that effect on me is:
"My friends tried to cheer me up, by getting together at the Pizza Hut. I didn't have the heart to tell them, that was our place"
I had a "place" with the one from high school. It's what to this day prevents me from going to that place when I'm back home (and that was 20 years ago, but she was my first love...we were inseparable for years, then we graduated. Life, time, and distance tore us apart. "You can have my Grandma's locket, the knife out of my grandpa's pocket, My state championship jacket, I don't care, you can have it"
In other words, take it all, just let me have my hometown without your haunting presence everywhere.
I think the story and the lyrics are great. It's growing on me with each listen. I'm not surprised that I'm in the minority here. :)

The beginning is perfect I think! But then it seems to lose itself. You are right there is no real chorus, but I don;t think it really needs one. Totally agree with Jaseboyhyde above where its a song telling a story, and is also growing on me with each listen!

If people think this is the worst single of the year, this is going to be an amazing year for country music.
This has great lyrics and a great story. I can understand not everyone loving it as much as I do, but to say it could be the worst single of the year boggles my mind.

I love this! The lack of Chorus doesn't bother me at all and I'm glad to "hear" a song with different subject matter to start the year off.

I honestly think some people listen to a song one time, and if it's an artist they don't particularly like they immediately write a review about how awful the song is and say things like "it doesn't even have a story" or "it doesn't go anywhere". I think this song has more of a story and connection than most mainstream stuff today.

^ I see what your saying....very early on to the year and something is bound to take its place, but I have listened to it several times and I don't get it. To me it just rambles on and on about the same thing over and over then he runs out of things to stay and just starts oohing to get to a normal song length. No real chorus, same story just with different lines and it does nothing for me. Fine if it works for you...but it's a station changer for me

I don't see much difference in having a chorus that you sing along with and "oh oooh's" that you sing along with as the music builds underneath and tells its own story. Both are repetitive and don't add anything "new" to the song. In Springsteen, the oh-oh-oh-oh-oh's were crowd favorites. In "Sinners Like Me" the La-Dee-Da's were fan favorites. Eric's always implemented oooh's, and sometimes they're part of or in lieu of a "chorus". It doesn't mean people won't sing along or enjoy that part of the song. In fact, during that part of the song, it gives the listener time to reflect on his or her memories and get lost in those thoughts. It's a soundtrack to your own nostalgia. I think it's cool, but everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion and allowed to disagree. I'm sure I change the station during songs that some people love. Different strokes for different folks.
