I can't imagine two stations not picking those three songs up yet.

I like this.
As much as Eric can be a bit of a pretentious, entitled, self righteous a$$ - he is right about 70% of the time...and (i) we respect him for it.
This song reminds me of some early U2.. it almost makes you pay attention because you just want to see what it is going to to do... Jay Joyce once again delivers in the production dept ... almost a little over dramatic with the driving percussion.. but it works.
I;ve never been one to guestimate at chart runs... but this is another solid release (as opposed to Outsiders... that was noise). I'll buy the record.

I could do without the "whoas" and "ohs" (I also didn't like them in Springsteen and sing "row, row, row your boat" instead...), but this is infinitely more listenable than The Outsiders and something I will actually listen to. It will have to grow on me, as I don't immediately love it, but it's listenable. Which is more than I can say for a lot of what's on radio right now.

Hey Brian, Is there a source you're allowed to list here that shows the current mediabase chart? I know the rules and regulations change often and to be honest I'm not really up to date on them. No daily updates are allowed as far as I know. :)

I posted the new rules a couple weeks ago.

This is much, much better than "The Outsiders", but I don't love it. It starts off so good, but then gets off track partway through for me. He sets up a great story for the first verse and chorus, and then the song doesn't really go anywhere (all of those "yeahs" and "oohs" are fairly unnecessary, imo). The background instruments are also a little loud, and drown out Eric's voice at some parts too, especially when he's talking about his Grandma's ring. But, it's better than a lot of what else is out there. At this point, I'm not buying the album though, unless some of the other songs really impress me.

While Luke, Blake, and Jason have been taking quite a tumble quality-wise, this guy right here just keeps getting better.

It's my opinion that this is going to be the most diverse album any mainstream country artist has ever released.

I used to not be able to stand Eric Church, although now I'm starting to rethink my old position on that and consider giving his earlier stuff a second chance. It was mostly his personality and permanent sunglasses that irked me previously, because I did love "Springsteen".
I was one of the few who absolutely loved "The Outsiders" after his CMA performance of it, and this one has me even more excited for his new album. I love the drum beat in it, and I think it's very catchy. I could see this being a lot of fun for audiences to get into at outdoor festival shows in the summertime. Eric is one of the few current male country artists who is actually trying new things and not relying on the bro-country formula, and I really appreciate that. Country needs more male stars who are willing to step out of the box.

Thanks so much for posting those links! Love both songs. Dark Side ended a little differently than I was expecting but sounds pretty good. Absolutely loved A Man Who Was Gonna Die Young. Good stuff. Can't wait for the album.

"When you’re done, you’ll still have questions. But that’s what makes the ‘Give Me Back My Hometown’ video so compelling, since you are never quite sure what’s happening." I thought it was about an old flame, according to some people's interpretations-but that video makes it look like it is some kind of crime story or something? No clue. I do like the song though. And it is good to see him without sunglasses.

Any fan of the show Breaking Bad will not only like the video, but have a good understanding of it as well.

I thought it was about an old flame, according to some people's interpretations-but that video makes it look like it is some kind of crime story or something? No clue. I do like the song though. And it is good to see him without sunglasses. I still think the song's about an old flame who can't leave his memories and he wants his hometown back (So he can enjoy it again). But they decided to take the video into a different direction. I'm not saying I would have done a crime/drug/murder type video but it was certainly compelling. I will admit about half way through the video I was pretty confused, but the end with the guy at the beginning of the video fleeing the building with a gun made it make sense to me. Again, pretty overly creative if you ask me (I much rather would have seen a video that actually is what the song is about), but it was a different type video that was fun to watch. I agree it was cool to see Eric look this way in this video. I think he did a great job at selling his emotions while he was singing.

Any fan of the show Breaking Bad will not only like the video, but have a good understanding of it as well. I must be pretty stupid then since Breaking Bad is one of my favorite series of all time ;) To clarify-I'm not saying the video doesn't tell a story/make sense in itself......but that it doesn't seem to follow the 'old flame' memories ruining his hometown memories meme the song is supposedly about. And this is not uncommon in music videos-plenty take liberty and wind up with a twist on the song's apparent lyrical meaning. The video is artistically filmed, doesn't look cheap, is interesting, good Eric frames; but IMO the edgy look of the video doesn't correlate with the angsty, wistful tone of the song, especially if it is about a prior romance-so I agree with the commentary at TOC.

The actual title of this song does make sense with the video. I don't know if Eric wants this song to have more than one meaning, because it's pretty clear in the lyrics it's about an old flame haunting his memories. Basically the video is a group of people using drugs and money to corrupt the small town, and the guy in the beginning of the video might have a love interest with the upset girl who walks into the pool bar. He then must feel he has to take matters in his own hands and murders the women who has corrupted their hometown, hence the title of the song.
I'm pretty sure that's what the video is about. All I can say is I can relate a whole lot more to the original interpretation of the song before the video came out.
I know the video is meant to be different and artistic, but perhaps there will be fans who are confused about the video and feel unsure of what the song is about. But then again maybe the video will create more buzz and discussion for the song and give it a better chance at succeeding at radio. I like to make it known after watching this video multiple times, I really did find it very compelling.

Any fan of the show Breaking Bad will not only like the video, but have a good understanding of it as well. Breaking Bad fan here! Glad to see Steven Gomez, err I mean Steven Quezada, make a cameo in the video. As for the video, I loved it. It actually makes me appreciate the song more. Many times a video can make or break a song...in this instance it does justice to a great song. Behind "I Hold On" this is second to being my favorite song of the year so far. Anxiously awaiting more Eric...and slightly jealous to everyone in Omaha tonight who got to see him with George. Quick edit: after watching this video quite a few times...I am just hooked. I can actually visualize this song now. Without a doubt there is no other artist in country music right now like Eric who displays the artistic integrity for taking the country music genre to another level, unlike from the songs we've heard from Luke, Blake, FGL, and the recent Tim McGraw.

From thecountrysite.com/2014/01/18/eric-church-unveils-mysterious-music-video-for-new-single-give-me-back-my-hometown/"NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 18, 2014) – The mystery and excitement surrounding Eric Church’s forthcoming album The Outsiders continues to build with the release of the music video for his new single, “Give Me Back My Hometown.” The video, which is live on Vevo today and will be released to all video outlets Saturday, Jan. 18, was directed by Peter Zavadil and is the first chapter of an overarching narrative featuring characters that fans will get to know throughout the course of listening to The Outsiders."

I have to admit, I can't stop watching the music video for this. It certainly pushed me to like this song. I didn't know what to think of this video or the song for that matter the first time I heard them. But the drama and the darkness of the video made may pay full attention. I would love to see a TV show or movie about this (Though we've had others with that story line I guess). I thought whoever directed it did a great job at shooting and editing this thing.
As for the song itself, I still could use a better chorus and less yeahhs and ohhs, but the song (Because of the video probably) has become addicting and I like the subject of the song and always did. I still think "Sinners Like Me", "Two Pink Lines", and "Springsteen" are better songs but this one is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

^my thoughts exactly sabre14! I can't help but appreciate Eric for not catering to the bro-country format radio has taken on and instead continues to the beat of his own drum. Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but Eric did an all but acoustic performance last weekend in Omaha and Kansas City when opening for George. You have to check out some of the videos from the show on youtube. It took a while for Jason Aldean to fully capture the attention of everyone in Austin (he even mentioned something about "Hey, I know y'all are here to see George, but let's get up off those butts a little."). Based on what I saw in the videos it doesn't seem Eric had that problem.

I'm biased since Eric tops my list but I was at the Kansas City concert and yeah, there was no need for him to get the crowd into it ... it was 3/4 full when he started but by song No. 2 it was packed. He led off with 'Drink In My Hand' which I'm sure helped his cause. Here's a short clip I recorded: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo9kFquMfFc

"A Man Who Was Gonna Die Young" is now available to buy on iTunes from his new album coming up. Really good song, those that like the traditional side of Eric will like it alot.

Love Eric, but this was posted on his Facebook two weeks ago:
Eric Church I just wanted to reach out to guys regarding the trouble many of you are having with getting the single, "Give Me Back My Hometown" on iTunes. I know it is conflicting with a large number of people who preordered the album. It's frustrating and we are working diligently with iTunes to fix this. I feel confident it will be resolved soon. Just wanted to apologize to our loyal fans who preordered, The Outsiders. - Eric
So for him to say that he is and never will be on Facebook is weird. While I understand that someone else probably runs it, he looks silly saying he is never on it when his own FB page is either him on it or someone portraying him.
However, with that said, I can't wait to get this album!

^I remembered that post as well. The "-Eric" at the end of it implies (at least to me) that he posted that particular update himself. But it wouldn't surprise me if the vast majority of the other posts associated with that account are actually made by people on his team instead (with his approval).
