I'd prefer him to go along the veins of Climax and make R&B music which sounds cutting edge and innovative. But if he really wants that hit, he should have no problem doing what John Legend and Pharrell are doing right now. Usher is definitely one of the few R&B artists who white people are still staunchly here for. If he releases an R&B song which straddles the pop line, like Happy, he should be able to pander to pop audiences like Pharrell has. I wouldn't be mad at that the hustle, as long as he leaves dance music behind, but I'd definitely rather him release some really great, forward thinking R&B than a guaranteed hit.

I think he should have a couple of dance songs, though, in addition to the Urban stuff. I mean, who else wants to see him dance?

For JD, form is stagnant. The same goes for Timbaland (and Pharrell, tbh). I guess it just depends on whether people are ready for JD's sound again.

^ I get what you are saying to a certain extent but... Polow Da Don (who I think is great) gave Usher 1 hit, which was not really an straight up R&B song. JD has given Usher multiple hits over a number of albums , not just confessions era. There are just certain artists and producers that make great music together and I believe they are 1 example. There is an old saying in football, "form is temporary, class is permanent" and JD is a class producer. He may not have produced a hit in a while but that doesn't mean he can't do it again. How many people wrote off Timbaland in 2012 (before 20/20 and everything since)? BTW I don't care about Usher getting a hit on pop. I just want great R&B music again. Yes, others can produce some good R&B music for Usher but there is something extra special about those JD songs that stand above the rest in Usher's discography, which is why I hope they can do it again and wont write him off. Hmm, I am sort of opposite on this? If we're just talking solid r&b songs with no concern for crossover appeal, the need for JD is even less. And that is no dis to JD b/c Aside from "Yeah!" Usher's biggest hits are with JD. But I feel like, if I'm going to be itching for those two to make magic again it better be a huge crossover hit b/c otherwise I'd be more interested in Usher's work with other people, and Usher has had so many other good r&b songs with multiple producers that I just can't see myself picking JD of all people to be excited about. I'm not opposed to JD necessarily, it's just that nothing about the idea of him on Usher's album excites me enough to think "oh yeah, THAT is who I want Usher to go back in the studio with." I'd prefer him to go along the veins of Climax and make R&B music which sounds cutting edge and innovative. I actually think Usher would have gotten skull-dragged if he released a song like "Happy." But maybe you were just generally referring to him toeing the r&b/pop line, in which case I agree. (On a side note, I find myself measuring how 'r&b' I think a song is these days by how badly Usher would get dogged out if he released the same song. I guess that's why "Happy" feels so pop to me even though I hear its r&b elements.) The issue urban fans had with L4M was not just that it had a couple of dance-pop singles but that they believed the album had a bunch of pop music, period (dance just happened to be the specific trend). I even remember bumping heads with someone in the L4M b/c that person thought at least half the album was pop, and he was naming songs that definitely were not dance-pop...pretty sure he mentioned "Show Me." So I think it's actually going to be harder for Usher to pull off any kind of pandering to pop - he can get away with releasing an 'authentic' r&b song that happens to cross over, but putting out a song that was clearly designed to cross over might put him in hot water again. "Happy" has its r&b roots but that song is just so light and boppy, I feel like Usher would have gotten laughed at for it. And that's kind of unfair, but I believe when people think of Usher's r&b material they don't expect or want light bops no matter how good they might be; his hits all have some weight to them, even the pop-crossover ones. Now, I think he could pull off something like "All of Me" - I think both urban and pop fans will accept a simple and sweet love song along those lines from him and both formats are currently into that sound in general. I also agree with the sentiment of him putting out something innovative and I think that is another thing that is a double-edged sword with him. Even in his less successful eras he has managed to have at least one r&b hit that was seen as fresh for the time ("Climax" or LITC for example) so there is this expectation not that Usher will be on trend, but ahead of it. I think he should have a couple of dance songs, though, in addition to the Urban stuff. I mean, who else wants to see him dance? His urban fanbase. Well, urban's idea of dance is a bit different from pop dance lol. But aside from that, dance-pop music is mostly passe right now. I don't even think pop fans would want another DJ from him at the moment.

I'd prefer him to go along the veins of Climax and make R&B music which sounds cutting edge and innovative. Co-sign At the same time though, I just want forward thinking Usher more than anything. He was always ahead of trends and the Looking 4 Myself album was no exception, apart from the fact that (bar "Climax") he released the safest songs on the album (both on the Urban and Pop sides). I guess I'd take forward thinking pop-R&B over generic traditional R&B, though forward thinking R&B is the main desire. "Looking For Myself" (the song) was hot as hell so I'm not opposed to pop Usher per se, just nothing more like "Scream" or "Can't Stop Won't Stop" please. If he released an album exclusively of songs in the style of "I Care 4 U," "2nd Round," and "Climax" now THAT would be a welcome return to form imo.

LOL the initial vibe here is hardly positive. I agree that Rico's alleged involvement and the title are both worthy of le cringe, however I'll leave my faith in the Head of Music at BBC Radio 1's tweet for now.

I so wished they released Looking for Myself as a single. I thought it could have done well at Top 40, Rythmic and maybe even Adult Top 40.

Not enough to shout a definitive "smash!" but the potential is definitely there.

Hmmm. I wonder if this will have any type of "Pop appeal" & will they service this over there. He is on The Voice & perhaps he can capture a CC deal for Pop, if they go that route.
