Yea no one is thinking about this album. She's going to need an Urban smash to get some buzz going for an album. What is her last hit? "Just Fine"? "Just Fine" was her last Top 40 Hot 100 hit. "Mr. Wrong" was her last Top 10 R&B/Hip-Hop hit.

Mr. Wrong wasn't huge at radio was it?
I feel like at this point in her career, it's all about visibility for Mary. If she can get the kind of consistent, sustained promo she had on her Christmas album, I think she could have great longterm sales. If she gets the typical R&B singer treatment these days, I doubt she'll sell much at all.

Mr. Wrong wasn't huge at radio was it? Maybe not "huge," but it went Top 10 Urban and Urban AC.

I'm surprised this wasn't pushed up. I hate what these labels aren't doing for these R&B artists. The album leaked and no back up plan instead releasing boring ballads to the public. LoL. None of the songs on the album are radio hit potential to me. Whole Damn Year I could see #1 on UAC. Besides that point, her label should still be effective with this unfortunate early leak. I also think if "Latch" (a song I never heard of until recently) can hit the top 10 on the urban format then "Right Now" shouldn't have an issue with scrapping at least top 20 on that format. IMO, they are quite similar in sound even though the execution of the former is better in sound and melody.

The album's growing on me. It's low-key but her most consistent since The Breakthrough. The only track I genuinely dislike is "Not Loving You," and I have an on-going love/hate relationship with "Therapy".
It currently has a 73 on Metacritic. All of her regular studio albums since No More Drama have scored in the 70s, so the reviews seem right in line with her usual.
Entertainment Weekly gave the album a B+.
The Observer gave it 4/5.
The Telgraph gave it 4/5
The Guardian gave it 3/5.
Slant gave it 3/5.
Daily News gave it 3/5.

I think 73 is pretty right...but Metacritic is not the Bible tho.

I was really expecting them to at least put out a deluxe version or throw on an extra couple tracks for the official release since it leaked so early. I wonder if she even recorded more. She usually has deluxe versions or b-sides.

I'm okay with this one being shorter. Often times in the past, I felt her albums were too long and weighted down by filler.

I just listened to the When You're Gone and Not Loving You clips. I will be buying this based on those alone. Beautiful songs and she sounds fantastic.
Edit: Don't know if anyone mentioned it but it's up on ITUNES First Listen. I wasn't expecting this to be so Becky but I like it.

She'll be performing on that GRAMMYs Christmas special, singing "When You're Gone"?

Debuts at #40 on the official UK Charts with 5,860 copies sold.
Ouch! I know Mary's never been huge there, but I expected her to do a little bit better with this album.

I'm listening to "Love & Life" atm. It's a really solid album, never understood the hate for it.

I like the album more than I thought I would. It's kind of lowkey so I think it'll take a while to really love the songs but the standouts for me on first listen were: Not Loving You, Right Now, When You're Gone, My Loving, Long Hard Look, Nobody But You and Pick Me Up.

She looked lovely in that dress and sounded beautiful in her performances on Wendy today. She's really aging well. Marriage and life must be real good to her right now.

This album isn't doing it for me AT ALL, only half good. It's so polished and kind of lifeless. She needed to LET LOOSE on some of these tracks, especially the uptempos. Imagine how much hotter songs like "Pick Me Up" and "Follow" would have been if she took it to church.

It does seem a little restrained, that'd be my only real complaint. I think I prefer ML2.

I'm not sure what people expected given the fact that Emeli Sande and Sam Smith were involved. I like classy Mary as much as unhinged Mary. At least they let her keep some of her bum notes. The production may be flawless but the singing and lyrics are ALL Mary, for better or worse.

The production may be flawless but the singing and lyrics are ALL Mary, for better or worse. I'm not bothered by the vocals on the slower tracks that much. Granted, most of them bore me, but vocals aren't the main issue. Lyrically, melodically, production-wise, they just don't grab at me. Maybe they will after repeated listens? There's no excuse for her vocals on the uptempos though. This is dance music, some of these songs are straight-up HOUSE. This is about dancing, about melisma about RELEASE and breaking free. She's sleepwalking and the songs never peak or climax like they should.

I just cracked upon the album for the first time and am on When You're Gone. I love how close she's miked on this album. It feels very intimate on the ballads. It's a very warm sounding album. I am not the biggest house fan anyway but I enjoyed Right Now and F For You. Looking forward to hearing the uptempos and giving my assessment but the first four songs are FLAWLESS.
Edit: I'm surprised at how involved Darkchild was. Kinda random since she went to London to work with these hot producers and artists over there but he really worked well with the rest of them, I have to say. I would never have guessed he produced When You're Gone and Doubt...not in a million years. Oh...this album sounds amazing in headphones too. Right Now's pingpong effect goes across both ears. Mary is so in the pocket on this beat. She's 5 for 5 so far. I really do think she takes a risk on this album. Doesn't sound like any other songs in her catalog.
