Not only is he sticking to that 70s/80's funk and R&B aesthetic musically, he is even adhering to the short tracklist aesthetic as well. Song is killer. Reminds me of the verses of Downtown. I can't wait for this album!

This album could have gone totally dark, there were certainly some dark days for Bruno, but instead he turned it into a celebration, he chose to honor his mom and grandmother — or Mamma as he called her — by making a joyous album. The lead single is amazing. My first impression was that it was one of the best songs of his career. If the rest of the album is like this...
This is so impressive, actually, regardless of how succesful the album and its singles turn out to be. Five years ago Bruno Mars was one of the lamest musicians in the industry who in my opinion hit the absolute rock bottom with "The Lazy Song". Sometimes he was cheesy like Charlie Puth with "Just the way you are", sometimes he acted like a drama queen like Shawn Mendes with for example "Grenade".... "Unorthodox Jukebox" was such an improvement in a perspective. And it looks like 24k Magic might be even better.

Totally disagree with you.
Bruno caught our attention because he brought back to pop fundamentals that were lacking in the male universe of his genre. He brought musicianship, melodies, and a pure strong vocal.
There were always some throwback elements to his music, his doo wop stuff being the first - and then the more funky stuff he got into that really propelled his fame.
There was no rock bottom for him as his popularity was on a steady increase since he stepped foot on stage.
He's probably getting a shit ton of residuals from "Marry You" alone.
Now he releases this new single, which is genius, and people wanna be like, hey, Bruno's cool after all.

Well, it's totally subjective. For some, Doo-Wops & Hooligans is a great album. For others, like me it's cheesy and really cringeworthy at times. Tbh, It's totally justified why I slept on him during his debut. It was at important album for Bruno at the time, it gave him the 1st buzz, It showcased his multiinstrumentalism, vocals, and performing skills, but it was way below his potential. During UJ era Bruno kept openly admitting that his debut was rushed, influenced by label executives and in the end he left Elektra because they wanted
D-W&H 2.0 him + he loathes The Lazy Song. Then he met Mark Ronson and the rest is history. But I'm sure he wouldn't nowhere near as big as he is today if he only kept releasing harmless love songs with overdramatic lyrics.

Still disagree.
When I Was Your Man was a second single from a sophomore album, after an uptempo first single, and it still hit #1.
Bruno has consistently been at the top since single No. 1, regardless of what anyone thinks about the quality of his first album, including Bruno himself.
I've been a fan of Bruno since day one, waiting for him to breakthrough. And it finally happened for him with the combo of Jukebox and Mark Ronson. The Super Bowl performance helped to solidify that and is one of the main reasons 24k Magic is going to be another hit for him.

Billboard: Bruno Mars' 5 Best Deep CutsBruno Mars may be known for his chart-topping hits, but there’s more to this Doo-Wop Hooligan than meets the ear. Mars has churned out a number of fantastic songs over the past half-decade, but a lot of them never got the recognition they deserved from the media, the airwaves, or even in the hearts of fans. Still these songs deserve a place in history alongside the ubiquitous hits, or at least a listen after you’re done spinning “24K Magic” on repeat [...] let’s take a look at some of the Bruno Mars songs that weren’t as popular -- the hidden treasures of his sneakily deep catalog.
5. “Natalie”
Mars pulled something great out of left field on sophomore album Unorthodox Jukebox with this furious song. Though he’s always been blatant with projecting his influences in his music, there was nothing more blatant than the clear Michael Jackson flair found on “Natalie”; Mars had most likely just spun Bad before heading into the studio to record it. The song’s subject nature and lyrical content doesn’t win him any points, but it still manages to have one of the strongest hooks in his entire catalog.
4. “The Other Side”
It sounds a little weird to refer to any of Mars’ material as “deep cuts” considering he’s only got a grand total of two full-length albums, but you know what? Let’s get weird. “The Other Side” was originally included on Mars’ EP It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, which pre-dates debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans by only a couple of months. “The Other Side” eventually ended up on the track list for Doo-Wops, but it was only tacked on as the record’s closer. With great guest spots from CeeLo Green and B.o.B, the song gets even better when you realize that it was co-written by Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy. No pop-punk here though: only soaring pop hooks that help make it one of Mars’ most unappreciated songs around.
3. “Mirror” (by Lil Wayne feat. Bruno Mars)
It didn’t take long for the music industry to realize that coupling Mars with a rap artist was a good decision. After the massive success Mars had with his feature on B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You,” he had a pretty busy summer in 2011 when it came to guest spots on hip-hop songs. First, Mars dropped some vocal tracks for Eminem and Royce Da 5'9"s supergroup project Bad Meets Evil and their song “Lighters.” Later in August, he made an appearance on Lil Wayne’s song “Mirror.” “Mirror” wasn’t on the standard edition of Tha Carter IV, but rather, it was a cut included on the deluxe version. Don’t let that deter you, though -- the song still holds up as a quality Lil Wayne number, and Mars’ vocals on the hook are as smooth as it gets.
2. “Runaway Baby”
“Runaway Baby” is one of the shortest Mars songs you’ll find, but it’s also one of his greatest. Barely clocking in at only two and a half minutes, the track does a lot in such a brief period of time, and what it does best of all is keep the listener coming back for more. Featuring sirens, hand claps and a signature funky Mars groove, the nonstop adrenaline from “Runaway Baby” was one of his first major songs that proved he was the real deal.
1. “Moonshine”
Though Mars’ calling card revolves around dance-floor-ready anthems that’ll get anyone up and moving, he’s just as good at cooking up ballads as he is the upbeat pop hits. “Moonshine,” a track off Unorthodox Jukebox, is one of the most eclectic songs Mars has ever delivered. A pop ballad at its roots, there are a lot of cool things going on with the track, most likely thanks to production work from mastermind producer, Jeff Bhasker. With a retro pop feel and a slight disco vibe to it, Mars unleashes a dose of musical ecstasy.

^I don't know what you expected from him exactly, but he's the same man that was writing about jars of Skippy & dragons wanting to retire just two years ago. He never promised anything yet I already like his new songs more than anything he put on Unorthodox Jukebox, ex Moonshine because to me it's pure perfection.

I'm hoping his defintion of 'ballad' is more on the narrow side. He's obviously steering clear of the sappier JTWYA/Grenade type songs, but I could see him tucking in a bump 'n grind type jam on there and not thinking of it as a ballad in the traditional sense.

Chapter 3 is everything Bruno's wanted. It's why he felt in love w/ music. It has the late 1980's & early 1990's vibe. Mars worked w/ Babyface on one of the songs.
