The Urban Cowboy Era lasted from 1980-1984. One of the biggest recipients of this time was Johnny Lee. His Lookin' For Love was used in Urban Cowboy. Released in June 1980, it topped the country chart for three weeks in September (becoming Lee's biggest hit) while placing at #5 pop and #10 adult contemporary. On the country side, Lee dethroned another #1 soundtrack single, Ronnie Milsap's Cowboys And Clowns, which was used in the Bronco Billy movie.

Back to a Clint Eastwood movie. This one, 1980's Any Which Way You Can. The big single from that movie was a duet between David Frizzell and Shelly West called You're The Reason God Made Oklahoma. Released in January 1981, it became their ONLY chart topping duet in April. They would score solo chart toppers between 1982-1983.

Dolly Parton released her third movie in 1984 called Rhinestone. Lead single, Tennessee Homesick Blues was released in June and topped the chart in September. This was the third #1 hit for Parton that was used in a movie following 9 To 5 (1981) and I Will Always Love You (1982).

Soundtrack Singles, Part V:
George Strait added movie star to his resume in 1992. That was possible because he was the star in Pure Country. Lead single, I Cross My Heart was released in September and topped the chart for two weeks in December. He topped the chart again off the soundtrack with Heartland in 1993. Pure Country, the movie bombed at the box office. Pure Country, the soundtrack remains Strait's best selling single title at six times platinum.

Clint Black decided to be a movie star in 1993. The movie was Maverick and his contribution, A Good Run Of Bad Luck was released in February, 1994. It topped the chart in May. It helped Black to be the most programmed artist in country in 1994 according to Billboard.

Let us salute those artists who scored their seventh #1 hit this week. First up is Alabama, who did it in 1982 with Take Me Down. That came from their album called Mountain Music. The title track was the lead single. That became their sixth chart topper in April. Take Me Down was released in May and claimed the top spot in July. It crossed over to #18 pop and #5 adult contemporary. Alabama was perfect with the third single, Close Enough To Perfect. That topped the chart in October.

It took the Bellamy Brothers just four years to collect seven chart topping hits from 1979-1983. They did so with their 1982 album, Strong Weakness. Lead single, Redneck Girl topped the chart in December. In January 1983, they released When I'm Away From You. That became the seventh #1 hit in April. They closed out the album with two more singles: I Love Her Mind (#4) and the title track (#15). They signed to MCA Records in 1983.

The Judds released an album in 1985 called Rockin' With The Rhythm. It contained a quartet of chart topping hits including their lucky seventh #1 hit. Lead single, Have Mercy topped the chart for the last two weeks of the year. They kicked off 1986 with another #1 called Grandpa Tell Me 'Bout The Good Old Days which topped the chart in May. Rockin' With The Rhythm Of The Rain was released in May and became their seventh #1 hit in August. They wrapped up the era with Cry Myself To Sleep which topped the chart in January, 1987.

Tanya Tucker's seventh #1 hit was a comeback in a big way. She hadn't had a chart topping hit in ten years. She signed to the Capitol label in 1985. She released her debut album for them called Girls Like Me in 1986. Lead single, One Love At A Time gave her a solid hit when it peaked at #3. Just Another Love was released in June and became her lucky seventh #1 hit in October. Two more singles kept her on the chart in 1987: I'll Come Back As Another Woman (#2) and It's Only Over For You (#8).

Lead single, We Tell Ourselves peaked at #2 for two weeks and could not remove Brooks & Dunn's Boot Scootin' Boogie out of the top spot. He ended the year with another top five hit, Burn One Down (#4). He opened 1993 with the third single, When My Ship Comes In. Released in January, it became Black's seventh chart topping hit for two weeks in March and April.

Alan Jackson landed his biggest hit to date with his seventh #1 hit, Chattahoochee in 1993. That came from his 1992 album, A Lot About Livin' And A Little 'Bout Love. Lead single, She's Got The Rhythm And I Got The Blues was a chart topping hit in December. 1993 was kicked off with the #4 peaking Tonight I Climbed The Wall. Chattahoochee was released in May and topped the chart for four weeks in July and August. It gave Jackson his debut on the pop chart when it peaked at #46 there. Fourth single, Mercury Blues got to #2 and could not unseat Tracy Lawrence's My Second Home from the top. The American Country Countdown named Chattahoochee the biggest hit of the year. Jackson wrapped up the era in 1994 with Who Says You Can't Have It All that peaked at #4.

Tracy Lawrence landed his biggest hit in 1996 with his seventh #1, Time Marches On. That was the title track to his 1996 album. Lead single, If You Loved Me was released in late 1995. It peaked at #4 in early 1996. Time Marches On was released in March and topped the chart for three weeks in June and July. He landed the #2 position twice with the next two singles: Stars Over Texas (blocked by Trisha Yearwood's Believe Me Baby I Lied) and Is That A Tear in 1997 (stalled by Nobody Knows by Kevin Sharp and It's A Little Too Late by Mark Chesnutt).

Faith Hill's seventh #1 hit became her biggest country hit and biggest crossover hit of all time. That was Breathe and it was the title track to her 1999 album. Released in October, it topped the country chart for six weeks in December and January, 2000. It peaked at #2 pop for five weeks and topped the adult contemporary chart for seventeen weeks. Second single, The Way You Love me did nearly as well, becoming a country chart topper for four weeks, peaking at #6 pop and #3 A.C.. Let's Make Love, a duet with Tim McGraw managed a #6 peak in country and a #54 peak in pop. Billboard named Breathe the biggest pop hit of the year while proclaiming it the #13 biggest country hit of the year. 2001 was kicked off with If My Heart Had Wings. That hit #3 country and #39 pop. Finally, the era ended with There Will Come A Day which managed to peak at #36 country only.

Released in March, it topped the country chart for six weeks in June and July. It crossed over to #24 pop and #2 adult contemporary. With Me was the second single and that peaked at #10. Not A Day Goes By kicked off their 2002 on a #3 note. The era wrapped up with the #12 peaking Unusually Unusual.

Brad Paisley collected chart topper #7 in 2007 with She's Everything. That came from his 2005 album called Time Well Wasted. Lead single, Alcohol peaked at #4. Then his longest streak of chart topping hits began. First up was a duet with Dolly Parton called When I Get Where I'm Going. That was released in late 2005 and topped the chart in March, 2006. The World topped the chart for three weeks during the summer in July and August. Fourth and final single, She's Everything was released in August. It topped the chart for the first three weeks of 2007. The Time Well Wasted album features the original recording of Waitin' On A Woman. That was rerecorded and placed on deluxe versions of Paisley's next album, 5th Gear. That topped the chart in 2008.

Let us salute those artists who landed their thirteenth chart topping hit. First up is Ronnie Milsap with Why Don't You Spend The Night. That was the lead single to his 1980 album, Milsap Magic. Released in January, it became his lucky 13th #1 hit in March. Second and final single, My Heart spent three big weeks at the top of the country chart in May and June. It became Milsap's biggest hit. BOTH the American Country Countdown and Billboard named it the biggest hit of the year.

Kenny Rogers landed his thirteenth #1 hit in 1982 with Love Will Turn You Around. That was the lead single and title track to his 1982 album. It was also used in the movie Six Pack. Released in June, it topped the country chart in September. It also crossed over to #13 pop and #1 adult contemporary. Second and final single, A Love Song was written by Lee Greenwood. Between late 1982-early 1983, it peaked at #3 country, #47 pop, and #10 A.C..

Earl Thomas Conley re-established a chart topping streak with his lucky thirteenth #1 hit, That Was A Close One in 1987. That came from his 1986 album, Too Many Times. The lead single was the title track, a duet with Anita Pointer. That peaked at #2 during the fall and could not get Exile's It'll Be Me out of the top spot. It ended Conley's longest streak of chart toppers at nine. He rebounded with the second single, I Can't Win For Losin' You. That topped the chart in February, 1987. That Was A Close One was released in March and became a #1 hit in July. It was his thirteenth #1 hit as well. The era ended with another chart topper, Right From The Start, which was a #1 hit in October.

Chart topper #13 for George Strait came in 1988 with Famous Last Words Of A Fool. That came from his 1988 album, If You Ain't Lovin', You Ain't Livin'. Famous Last Words Of A Fool was the lead single and that was released in January. It had previously charted for its songwriter, Dean Dillon in 1983 (#67). Strait's version topped the chart in April. Strait reeled in another chart topper with Baby Blue, which hit #1 in August. Third and final single was the title track. That was originally a #2 hit for Faron Young in 1955. Strait rode his version to #1 in December.

After thirteen years in the business, Reba McEntire fulfilled a dream in 1988. She got to title one of her albums Reba. Lead single, Sunday Kind Of Love hit #5 during the summer. Second single, I Know How He Feels topped the chart in December. In December, third and final single, New Fool At An Old Game was released. It became her lucky thirteenth chart topping hit in March, 1989.

Randy Travis made history in 1992 by releasing two albums on the same day. They were greatest hits discs. After all, he was with Warner Bros. for seven years by the time those albums were released. If I Didn't Have You was on the first volume. That was released in August and became Travis' thirteenth #1 hit in October. In November, Look Heart, No Hands, off Volume 2 was released. That topped the chart for two weeks in January, 1993. An Old Pair Of Shoes, off Volume 1 was released. That managed a chart peak of #21.

Garth Brooks roped in his lucky 13th #1 hit in 1993 with American Honky-Tonk Bar Association. That was the second single off his In Pieces album. Lead single, Ain't Going Down 'Til The Sun Comes Up topped the chart for two non-adjacent weeks in September. In September, American Honky-Tonk Bar Association was released. Brooks landed chart topper #13 in December. 1994 kept him on the charts three more times: Standing Outside The Fire (#3), One Night A Day (#7), and Callin' Baton Rouge (#2). The latter tune was kept out of the top spot by Brooks & Dunn's She's Not The Cheatin' Kind.

Fourth and final single, Unbroken hit #1 country in September and peaked at #26 pop.

Lead single, Never Wanted Nothing More became one of his biggest hits, spending five weeks at the top in July and August. In September, second single, Don't Blink was released. It debuted at #16, a new high on the chart. That lasted one week as Garth Brooks debuted at the top with More Than A Memory. Like Never Wanted Nothing More, Don't Blink topped the chart for five weeks, this time in October and November. Third single was Shiftwork. It was originally credited as a solo Chesney single. It was really a duet with George Strait. Released in December, it made it's way to #2 for a week in March, 2008 and could not get Rodney Atkins' Cleaning This Gun Come On In Boy out of the way of the top. Fourth and final single, Better As A Memory was a #1 hit in June and July for two weeks.

Lead single, Sure Be Cool If You Did was released in January and topped the chart for two weeks in March and April. It was his eighth consecutive #1 hit and 13th overall. Four more singles were released and they all hit the top: Boys 'Round Here for one week in June, Mine Would Be You for three weeks in November, Doin' What She Likes for two weeks in March and April, 2014, and My Eyes for one week in July.
