I just found out that in the Deep in the Night interlude it is 7yo Tinashe singing a song she wrote at this age. I've been checking for her since her REVERIE Mixtape, becoming more and more impressed with her releases, attitude, and dedication she put in her music... But I feel like I still wasn't prepared what she did to me w/ her debut. So far, I'm speechless.
+ SHE KILLED IT.

Official projection is 17-20k. That's brutal. :( Shame since it's a decent album.

Not surprised at that number at all. I don't know many people checking for her. Hopefully, she will go gold eventually and get more music out there.

I'm a little surprised by the numbers but I do think that the label should have taken a page out of Def Jam's playbook and tried to build Tinashe's name up for a minute before dropping her album.
I'm still hopeful because Tinashe has been getting a nice little buzz as of late. I don't know if these journalists are being paid off by RCA, but I've seen more than one publication cite Tinashe as at the forefront of R&B's next big phase.

Ehh... for a "new" R&B act with one hit, those numbers aren't bad.

Official projection is 17-20k. That's brutal. :( Shame since it's a decent album. 'Brutal' was literally the word that popped in my head when I scrolled down and saw the numbers. I'm not surprised, but I think the label has been trying to hype her as much as possible, and 2 On hasn't been a good representative of what she is about, which may have made some of her mixtape fans hesitant to commit. Then most of her live performances of the song have been mediocre or worse (when performances of her other material have been very good), so people new to her don't know what she can really offer besides another flash-in-the-pan hit that she can't even sing very well. Long story short, I think the label tried to pull a bait and switch to get people to check her out, but miscalculated how much typical radio 'bait' really sells, especially for new r&b artists. If anything they should have taken a note from Jhene - I think her making it obvious that she wasn't changing it up on people is why she opened so well. In the alternate reality in my head, the label would have promoted some songs from Tinashe's mixtapes to radio, then moved on to the album's lead single (which frankly should have been just about any song on the album other than 2 On, though 2 On is a cute bop). Regardless, I hope they continue to support her, because there are plenty of options left on the album which could carry it to a much better ending. It's great that almost all of the reviews have been glowing.

How is anyone surprised by those numbers? "2 On" was by no means massive, no one knows her name, and they haven't pushed a second single. Come on now.

I heard so many people complaining about her performing skills/vocals, and I just don't see that. She's pretty good for a newbie in this industry, imo.

Yeah, she's definitely got a stronger voice than many seem to be willing to give her credit for.

OMG. Just saw the Jimmy Kimmel and if her album is good (havent listened to it entirely yet)...she just MADE ME HER FAN!!
That performance gave me so many Janet vibes it's ridiculous. ABSOLUTELY loved the performance!!!
EDIT: and how refreshing it is to see someone dancing on stage with some real pants and shoes on. I missed that.

"Bet" is an absolute masterpiece.
I really love this album with the exception of the most of the interludes and the audio assault courtesy of Future on "How Many Times" (he ruins the vibe of it). Not really surprised of the lack of sales though honestly, but regardless that doesn't take away the quality of the album by any means. I was already a fan due to her Reverie and Black Water mixtapes so I'm glad this didn't disappoint.

This is quickly becoming one of my favorites albums of the past year. It was $7.99 at FYE so I couldn't resist buying it. "All Hands on Deck" is everything.

Yah, I will also say that the interludes don't really bother me. In the course of bloated R&B albums, I have heard MUCH worse.

I love the press she’s getting: Vogue, Teen Vogue, Billboard Magazine, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, V Magazine, Entertainment Weekly and VIBE are just few publications writing highly about her in these past several months. She’s releases a phenomenal debut and she gets a well-deserved acclaim for that. She’s a singer, songwriter, dancer, producer and has been acting since she was 3yo. She’s really refreshing to watch since it seems she’s improving with each live performance Yet, she’s been introduced to the GP with songs like 2 On & Pretend that makes her look like she’s nothing more than another Zendaya or Selena Gomez. FRUSTRATING.

I personally am not a fan of Pretend - that and Future sounding like he thought he had the hiccups, but it turned out it was an epileptic seizure are my least favorite moments of the album - but it speaks to the quality of Aquarius that what is one of the weaker links would be an absolute gem for most other people.

Are you confusing Pretend with the smash Future duet, sis @antigonerising? Both are the album highlights.

I honestly find Pretend to be a boring single choice, there are soooo many others I would have picked.

Are you confusing Pretend with the smash Future duet, sis @antigonerising? Both are the album highlights. No, I realize they're separate songs. I just don't care for Pretend (like I said, would be strong on almost any other album, but here is just not the better song imo) and How Many Times WOULD be nice, but Future sounds a damn fool. Something about turning up in her mouth and biting nipples is all I got out of that and I'm not titillated in the least. Take Future off and HMT becomes the masterpiece it deserves to be. My favorites - Cold Sweat, Bet, Far Side of the Moon, Bated Breath. That being said I can listen to the album straight through without skipping, so there almost isn't any point in noting which songs I love more than the other songs that I also love.
