I'm surprised that so many people who typically hate his music find this one to be more tolerable and some even enjoy it. Like its been mentioned by someone earlier, this is just so painfully average and the chorus is just flat out obnoxious to me. The "Oh my God, this is my song" part just feels soooooooo terribly awkward to me and actually makes me cringe.

The official video was released today. Just a simple live video with some backstage footage.

The "Oh my God, this is my song" part just feels soooooooo terribly awkward to me and actually makes me cringe. This is so accurate and the song is worse than I remember. It's just an overdone topic and the phrasing is so much worse than any other song that tries to do this topic. I think I'm just relieved it wasn't "Beer in the Headlights" or "I See You". Relative to the rest of the album, this is somewhat decent. I don't know if it's top 5, but it's close - "Blood Brothers" might be better, but it's not single-worthy. "Roller Coaster" and "Dirt Road Diary" are my projections for the next two singles. I'd be surprised if the first one wasn't released, but I suppose they could stop after that. Assuming those releases, replace TMKON with "Goodbye Girl", and that may be the best 6 songs on the album - again BB is close. Consider any other artist, and I think I'd be quite happy if 5 of the top 7 songs on an album were released. Yet, this song is far from the low point of the era unfortunately. The label couldn't have done much worse with the choices. This one is definitely going to wind up being a station changer, but I'll bear it for now while GMSOT, TIHWR, and LFTG are nearly making my ears bleed.

I like this much more than Luke's recent singles.
However, it's about as generic as they come lyrically, and the production only adds to the problem, IMO.
It's so frustrating that Luke's earlier singles had so much charm and personality; he's completely abandoned that lately.
I wanna root for him, but it's becoming difficult, based on either awful singles, or songs that lack Luke's charm and personality that's needed to make average material listenable.

Since Luke performed this on the ACM Awards tonight, it has rocketed all the way to #3 on iTunes Top Songs chart of all genre while it sits comfortably at #1 on Country.

This song seriously is the definition of generic in my opinion. The lyrics are really poor, and overall the song sounds so bland and outdated to me. There are tons of musicians in Nashville who could record this song. It doesn't show off any of Luke's personality. He just seems lazy on this song. Roller Coaster, I See You, and even Dirt Road Diary are way better songs. I'm going to be really upset if he doesn't release Roller Coaster, which would have made a perfect summer time release in my opinion. I was ok with all of the first 3 singles, but this one wouldn't even see the time of day without Luke Bryan's name attached to it.

Welcome, first of all. :) There appears to be all signs pointing to "Roller Coaster" as the next single. Luke appears to have filmed a video for it already. I always kind of knew that "Play It Again" would be released at some point, especially in the spring, so it wasn't surprising at all. I do agree with you on "Roller Coaster" being a fantastic song. IMO it's clearly the best song on this album. If "Roller Coaster" is released, which appears likely, it will probably be sent to radio in June or July with a peak around October or so. Luke's become so big that all of his singles skyrocket up the charts at warp speed; especially his last two. So the timing for you, while not picture perfect isn't as bad a sit seems. In fact I like the timing of when it will get released (as long as the word of it being released next holds up).

This song seriously is the definition of generic in my opinion. Yup, automatic next on the radio station. In fact, I'm just finding his whole single releases and act generic. I just don't get, see, or hear it. I was actually somewhat of a fan until his latest album (I loved "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" as an example). After that, his music just hit all kinds of generic buttons for me. He just hasn't grown in the way I'd expect an artist to I guess.

#1 on the mongrel chart. By Play It Again succeeding This Is How We Roll with Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan becomes the first artist since Willie Nelson to sew up back to back #1s on the country chart. Nelson did it in 1982 with Always On My Mind and then succeeded himself with Waylon Jennings on Just To Satisfy You.
As you know, I do not consider Bring On The Rain by Jo Dee Messina to be a full fledged duet with Tim McGraw. Some of you do. After Messina reached #1, McGraw landed at #1 with The Cowboy In Me in 2002.

^He might also succeed himself at #1 on the chart that matters if PIA starts to pick up the pace again.

Whether you feel like Tim McGraw deserved chart credit for "Bring on the Rain" is irrelevant, because he did receive credit on the charts.

How come Vince Gill does NOT get credit for backing up Sara Evans on No Place That Far (her first #1)?

How come Vince Gill does NOT get credit for backing up Sara Evans on No Place That Far (her first #1)? Ask Billboard or her record label? It's not a subjective thing. Either someone got the credit (Tim McGraw did) or they didn't (Vince Gill), and that's how it goes into the history books. I feel that Vince Gill probably should've gotten credit for NPTF, but I'm not gonna make up my own facts that he did just because that's what I would've done.

I have explained myself in the Most #1s thread (about Tim McGraw), so I am not rehashing that here.

Like its been mentioned by someone earlier, this is just so painfully average and the chorus is just flat out obnoxious to me. The "Oh my God, this is my song" part just feels soooooooo terribly awkward to me and actually makes me cringe. I'm one of the ones that dislikes most of Luke's releases of late (although I love "Drink a Beer") and find this one moderately pleasant. I think it is a matter of perspective for me. After listening to songs about shaking it for the catfish in the creek and then rhyming winner with catfish dinner and then being part of the FGL song, this one seems genius. I also agree though that the lyrics are very average and even obnoxious in spots. I'm annoyed that the song writers didn't change the last chorus to account for the girl hearing the boy play the song on his guitar. Lazy if you ask me. I've said it before, but Luke's downfall in my eyes began when he started releasing singles that were written by other people. I really like most (not all) of the songs that Luke had a hand in writing, especially early in his career.

If they release "Beer in the Headlights" next, I'll forgive them for releasing the awful "Drink a Beer" as a single. "Play It Again" is my favorite from the album, and I am glad it was released as a single. "Drink A Beer" awful? Hardly. One of 2014's best singles so far. As for the lyrics, this one was written by Ashley Gorley and Dallas Davidson 2 of the 3 co-writers for "That's My Kind Of Night." Maybe they just know that people want to hear the chorus the same and that it might be harder to follow if a couple of words were changed (to words about him playing her the song). Or they could've even written it that way but Luke and Jeff Stevens changed it to the way it is on the album.

I personally don't believe "Drink A Beer" was one of 2014 best singles thus far. Good song concept, but I thought the execution fell short. So now we have someone who loves it, someone who thinks it's average, and someone who thinks it's awful. :)

^ I second this. It's not bad but i don't break my neck to listen to it. Sounds bland as though he tried too hard to make a heartfelt song to me.

I'm in "love camp" for sure, but I don't think it's fair to say Brian is wrong with his opinion.

I've determined that the girl in this song has literally no concept of how radio works.
This song makes me crazy. Not in a good way. Next, please.

I actually loved Luke's vocals on DAB, but the song itself is so painfully boring and generic. This one has splashes of personality, but the quality falls short (again). Next.

I don't know if anyone else noticed this in the lyrics too, but this really irritates me:
"The next Friday night we were sittin' out under the stars You should have seen her smile when I brought out my guitar
She was like, oh my God, this is my song I've been listenin' to the radio all night long Sittin' 'round waitin' for it to come on and here it is She was like, come here boy, I wanna dance 'Fore I said a word, she was takin' my hand Spinnin' me around 'til it faded out And she gave me a kiss And she said, play it again, play it again, play it again And I said, play it again, play it again, play it again"
Were the writer's not thinking?? If he is playing the song on his guitar for her and she takes his hand to dance with him....who's playing the song?
Lol just shows how much "effort" is put into songwriting these days.

You are not supposed to analyze the lyrics. You are supposed to drool over Luke's voice ass-shaking. There, fixed that for ya.
