I don't think echo/voice distortion is a good barometer on its own. NIN, RHCP, Killers, YYYs, Muse, etc all rely on it heavily. I would argue that over half of these #1 songs use it to the point of annoyance :)

Weird performance on Seth Meyers last night. The vocals were really good in parts and really bad in others. The backup singers/dancers were strange.
They did refer to it as the "number one song on alternative radio," which I believe is calculated using Mediabase's audience number.

I did see that performance, which in my opinion wasn't that great. This is the type of song that I don't think can sound all that great live unless they bring a good amount of the sounds/effects from the studio to play while they are performing.
Tongues sounded really good though.

I'm really curious to see who gets more exposure out of this single. I mean, who actually owns this song? Big Data is a one-man electronic music project (according to wikipedia) and Joywave is an actual band. I'm still a bit confused as to how each act works, as I don't know anything about who KOPPS is (the features artist/band/whatever) from "Tongues"
So, is Big Data gonna be like a new indie/alternative version of CHR's random EDM DJs? Is Joywave going to do songs on their own and get big off this single? Is this like Timbaland/OneRpublic in Apologize? Furthermore, will "Tongues" blow up as it should? Who the hell is KOPPS?

KOPPS seems like a Phantogram type duo from their solo songs

Wait, I thought Big Data was the singer and Joywave did the electronic part... I don't want to interrupt my Nine Inch Nails album just to find out.

Wait, I thought Big Data was the singer and Joywave did the electronic part... The main guy singing (the guy on stage right if you were watching the performance last night) is the lead singer of Joywave. The Big Data guy (the guy with the synth/computery stuff) seemed to sing backup/harmonies during the performance. Thus far, neither has gotten a huge boost on social. Big Data has a verified Facebook account but an unverified Twitter; it's the opposite for Joywave. Both have like ~9K Facebook fans and ~2.5K Twitter followers, which is pretty weak considering how big this song is on alt.

Early on I assumed that Big Data was a duo based on the early promotional material (the first result when you Google image search "Big Data band" is a picture of the producer, Alan Wilkis, and Daniel Armbruster, the vocalist from Joywave), but apparently it's primarily Wilkis with a rotating cast of collaborators. Joywave is an actual band, as is Kopps, apparently. They're both from Rochester, NY. Other than the vocals (Joywave) and the cowbell (Kopps) I have no idea who exactly does what on "Tongues", oddly enough. Wonder if Kopps will release a single featuring some other artist to add to the chain?

The back-up singers/dancers for the Seth Meyers performance looked like white girls trying to get down in the club...
The performance was good, but Joywave's 'falsetto' was awful.

This is at #134 on iTunes and rising. I'm kind of surprised this has even hit Top 200. This has been chilling in the #150-#160 range for the past week and a half or so. Seth Meyers is actually kinda helping.

Seth Meyers is actually kinda helping. I'm not surprised. This is a massive pop crossover hit waiting to happen. Also I just watched the Seth Myers performances of both "Dangerous" and "Tongues" from the other night. I don't know what it was, but the Joywave singer was pretty poor in the "Dangerous" performance, but I thought the "Tongues" performance was fantastic. This should also be #1 on Alternative tomorrow 1 1 BLEACHERS I Wanna Get Better 2546 2546 0 9.807 3 2 BIG DATA Dangerous f/Joywave 2541 2384 157 10.438

Also this needs to be #1.

Looks like we've got a new #1!
3 1 BIG DATA Dangerous f/Joywave 2567 2399 168 10.606
Now if we could just get "Tongues" into at least the top 20...

Woooo! So happy this could finally hit #1. I'm curious to see how long it can hold the top spot though, I too would like to see it hold off Riptide.

I hope this holds "Riptide" at #2 I hope Riptide free falls. I'm perplexed as to how "Riptide" even got as far as it did. But yeah, hopefully it falls sooner than later.

I hate that you guys hate "Riptide." :'( Heh, sorry man. I find his voice and the whole ukelele bit rather irritating, even if the song is, albeit slightly, catchy.

I don't hate it, I enjoyed it initially but it burned out on me after a few months. I'm kind of sick of hearing it now that it's blowing up on radio. Also Dangerous is so much better imo so I'd hate to see it fall to Riptide.

Riptide doesn't seem like a Top 10 hit to me, much less a top 5 one.

I'm glad this song knocks off the Bleacher's song from top spot. It's one of the 4 songs I like in the alt rock top 10 this week. The other 3 being; "Fever" "Wy'd you call Me..." and "Back To The Shack"

I wonder if their label will try a pop crossover with this. It might not do much, but I think it is definitely worth a try. If "Come With Me Now" can be as big as it is, I'm sure this has a shot. There's still a decent chance this replaces "Fever" at #1 here too, and Alt #1s these days have a decent success rate on pop (although nowhere near as good as about a year ago) i think the folksy sound of CWMN is what got it to cross over. It was like in a way a irish bar or pub anthem. This song does not come off as that impactful to me, but who knows.

"Riptide"'s catchy and all but I don't see how anyone can listen to it without cringing at those lyrics
Not surprised that it went top 5, however

I can't decide if I like "Riptide" or not. It is semi-catchy, but lyrically it bothers me. I'm just going to classify it as I do when I take Rate The Music's Alternative survey every week as so-so.
