...why are so many people hooked on the idea of a Bon Jovi halftime?

I have to agree with P!nk I guess. She's inoffensive enough, and has been around enough to structure a setlist appealing to multiple generations, along with some kind of classic rock cover. The next Super Bowl is in Glendale, which to my memory is an indoor stadium, so she could do some of her high-wire acts.
From the Country side, I could see Taylor doing it maybe, but I feel that it's still a little bit too early because her number of actual big crossover hits isn't that big, but if she gets another pair from her new album that is presumably coming in the fall, maybe then. The person who said Garth also makes good points, and he's known enough out of the country circles to work. He could get enough older viewers that the fact that he hasn't been a regular active recording artist in over a decade won't be that big of a deal.
Rihanna could work, but she would probably need a guest to help back her up at some point. Either way, her catalog is massive, and she's reached a point where she seems to be an industry staple.
I could see them asking Maroon 5 given their connections, and they have enough hits I suppose. It'd just be kinda underwhelming overall I think.
As little as 2 years ago, the idea of a Katy Perry halftime show would have been completely laughable and ludicrous even to think about as a reality, but now, I could kinda see it happening. I don't think she's really capable as a performer of pulling it off right now, but the BEP technically didn't do a good performance, but the way they structured their setlist and segued it was absolutely impeccable. So much so that it really covered most of their faults up well. I can see a similar approach working for Katy, her catalog is diverse enough now to to do that.
Anyone who seriously thinks Adele would be a good choice doesn't have a clue what kind of music is generally suitable for such an event.

Interesting that, even on Pulse, Gaga hasn't been mentioned once. The brakes on her career have been hit hard.

I don't disagree, but when did Pulse start factoring in such logic when it comes to their faves?

Maybe Unconditionally's performance relative to Katy's recent streak has had something to do with it. Only the Queen, underperformingflopping for your brains :'(.

P!nk does have the stamina and the catalog, so she's a possible bet, while Rihanna has as much of a chance given that they always do guest appearances with these performances. There were a HELL of a lot of those when Madonna performed.
I dunno... I see her, RiRi or possibly Usher perform. Maybe he can bring in some of his friends from The Voice, particularly Maroon 5 and Shakira.

I wouldn't want to see another inoffensive Pop act perform, personally, such as Pink, Katy Perry or Kelly Clarkson. It just doesn't fit with the event.
Maybe one with a higher recognition level, such as Lady GaGa, could be decent.
Otherwise, I'd go with an actual band. For a classic pick, I wouldn't mind seeing Eric Clapton or Journey. For a more modern band, I would love to see the Foo Fighters, I believe their material would be perfect for the event.

The halftime show is designed to appeal to the largest possible audience. An inoffensive act, whether Pop or not, is exactly what fits with it.

I don't want a Gaga performance yet. It would get to her head and it's too soon anyway.
She needs to focus and humble herself a bit, have another slayage era and then we can discuss Superbowl for her.

You know, I'm surprised she wasn't the top suggestion. If Bruno Mars can get selected, Katy is a perfectly valid option since she's absolutely murdering the charts and has-- somehow-- gained a fairly decent following for it. P!nk seems a good choice too, because she'll appeal to an older crowd anyway-- although the middle-aged white women of America might not be as dedicated to TV guide compared to the younger crowd. I'd like to see a proper Britney Spears performance, but that's not going to happen ever. In a perfect world, though? Next year we'd see Ciara to the stage.

I'm honestly just waiting to see how many special guests will appear on next year's performance. We got the Destiny's Child reunion last year and RHCP last week, so another flashback moment is sure to come.

Pink as long as she doesnt spend the wholetime suspended in air and doing the same tired schtick over. Lady GaGa would be my second bet. I mean, shes one of the great er performers regardless of her current status.

I know it won't happen, but i'd love to see a J.lo halftime show. Her performances are always entertaining, even tho she doesn't have the best voice and would not sing live.
Shakira would also be amazing, but maybe shes way too latina for an American event.

I actually think that Shakira would also be a fantastic choice. The latin population of the country is expanding, and she could definitely appeal to that. Granted her number of recognizable hits isn't extremely huge to the majority, but she's just such a dynamic performer that that wouldn't really matter.

Don't like P!nk performing a half-time show, but I could see Shakira performing or maybe Taylor Swift, I honestly think those would be captivating performances. But no Rihanna (her voice live )

Stupid.
Also, Coldplay is the only one of those I would want to see perform.

I like both Coldplay and Rihanna more than Carrie Underwood, musically, but I don't see them putting on a better show for that venue than her. Rihanna doesn't really have much stage presence or live singing/dancing talent to fill a stadium of that size, though she has the catalog for like four separate halftime shows. Coldplay also just feels like a bit of a drab choice.
Maybe Pink said no.

I still want Luke Bryan or Carrie for this. They haven't had a country artist in ages.

A Coldplay halftime is pretty much inevitable though (if they hadn't broken through right during nipplegate and the subsequent geezerfest, they probably would have been asked in the late 00s), so if it happens this year so be it. I agree with dbhmr that it would probably be an eh choice, but so much of their catalog (especially since X&Y) is so geared for stadiums that this is pretty much a perfect matchup in the strict technical sense. U2 played it 13 years ago (counting back from the upcoming one), so it's pretty much a matter of time 'till U2 Jr. is also asked.

I'm still holding on to any hope left remaining that Carrie's got the gig, but I'm preparing myself for it to be Katy Perry.

I've given up hope for it to be Carrie, but if not Carrie, I'm hoping for Coldplay or Pink. Rihanna (and especially Katy Perry) would be a huge downgrade because of their poor stage presence, vocals, etc (IMO, of course).

Carrie has the voice, the stage presence, the star power, the catalogs. She is the right person.
If its not Carrie. I'd love to see Pink.
