It will be its 10th Anniversary in March: Damita Jo was Janet Jackson's 8th studio album. Released following the controversial Superbowl performance, it didn't have much commercial success. Though it debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts, its sales were slow and it was eventually only certified Platinum by the RIAA. The blacklisting of Janet's music from radio and TV after the scandal didn't certainly help the album get exposure, though the lead single 'Just A Little While' peaked at #17 at Pop radio and the 2bd single 'I Want You' was a top 20 hit on the R&B chart. This was also the first Janet album not to feature Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis as the sole producers. Janet collaborated with Kanye West, Dallas Austin, Scott Storch and Babyface to name a few. It features a more R&B sound following the definitely more Pop-leaning All For You.

Damita Jo is sorely underrated. "Island Life" is heavenly to me. I actually didn't care much for "Just A Little While" when it was released, but I absolutely LOVE Peter Rauhofer's remix. (RIP) I've grown to appreciate the original now. It's a great pop record.

It's not a bad album, but I remember listening to it for the first time and feeling like I was missing something. It just didn't feel like a Janet album to me, and I didn't hear a single potential hit on it. It has plenty of pleasant songs that are nice to listen to among the rest of her discography, but as a whole body of work it just doesn't do much for me.
Now that her hit-making days are behind her, I'd really just love to hear her get back with Jimmy & Terry one day and record vintage Janet records... or even work with newer producers who can recreate that sound for her (like Rodney with "Make Me"). I don't want any "Call On Me" or "Feedback" kind of records trying to emulate younger acts.

It also debuted at #2 (behind Usher's "Confessions") - not #1.

One of my favorite Janet albums. Beyond underrated. It's a chill album, you definitely need to be in a vibe mood for it. It's very cohesive and works perfectly as a solid R&B album. The first three tracks are urban-flavored bangers "Damita Jo", "Sexhibition" and "Strawberry Bounce" literally slay. ESPECIALLY "Bounce" with it's Jay-Z sample and perfect SNL performance. All of the slower tracks like "Spending Time With You", "Like You Don't Love Me" and "Thinkin' Bout My Ex" are great R&B tracks, the only one on the album that I think is a little too boring is "My Baby" but besides that they are all quality. "I Want You" and "R&B Junkie" are 2 of my favorite Janet songs. I love the motown feel of "I Want You" and her vocals are ecstasy. Also, "Moist" has a beautiful melody and lush production and is not as dirty as people try to make it seem. "Warmth" is iight but it's still playable when you have the album on. The whole tracklist is so perfectly together and cohesive it's hard to skip anything. There's nothing on here that I think is a bad song. "Truly" is often pointed out as one of Janet's worst songs (WHAT) but I think it's simplicity is beautiful. Everybody was just too used to upbeat-poppy Janet that when this album came people were calling it "boring". I think "Strawberry Bounce", "Sexhibition", "Just a Little While" and "All Nite (Don't Stop)" are all enough to fill the quota of dance/fun/upbeat tracks.
Great album.

I missed this the first time around, but I did check it out in recent years and I thought it was pretty decent. It was her last really solid effort. It had some really fun songs. There were plenty of good single tracks. It's a shame that the Super Bowl incident overshadowed and basically killed the momentum this era otherwise would have had. The sexual songs were not quite as out there as the ones on the prior album. They were more sensual. "R&B Junkie" was the perfect single choice, same with "All Nite (Don't Stop)". It's sad that the former never quite got to be the hit it deserved to be.

This might be my favorite album from her after janet. The only song on here I don't like is Just A Little While, and even that was fixed by the remix. It's really such a solid body of work.

Island Life and SloLove are everything!!!
A pretty decent album overall, with some filler in the first and the last thirds of it.

This album has a lot of good tracks on it. It lacks the epicness of her four streak of masterpieces, but it got an unnecessarily bad rep at the time.
The major problem is it's so front heavy. It completely goes to shit after "LYDLM" for me. The only song I like in that back end is "SloLove." And the fact that "Put Your Hands On" didn't make the album is CRIMINAL. A big improvement over AFY for me, gave me hope in Janet again.

A really good album. I rank it as #5 in her discography after the 1986-1997 ones.
There are a few tracks I skip when I listen to it, namely "Spending Time With You", "Truly" and "Slolove", though they're not necessarily bad, just a bit boring. As mentioned, the "Damita Jo"/"Sexhibition"/"Strawberry Bounce" sequence is fire. I like the carefree feel of the cute tracks like "My Baby" and "Like You Don't Love Me" and I think "Warmth" is just fantastic.

Step up from All For You and her second best after Unbreakable, this century. There are some seriously good stand outs on this album.
Love "Sexhibition, "Strawberry Bounce," "My Baby," "Spending Time With You," "Island Life," "All Nite (Don't Stop)," "R&B Junkie," "I Want You" and "Just A Little While."

Honestly, not one of my favorites. The only tracks I consider revisiting are "I Want You" "Strawberry Bounce" "All Nite (Don't Stop)" "Spending Time With You" "Like Your Don't Love Me" "SloLove" --prequel to "Rock With U" and "Night" "Island Life" and "Moist" (lol, half the album)
I was very relieved when she came out with 20 YO, an album that felt a lot more like Janet and one I rarely skip tracks on.

Looking back on it, it's a bloated record with a number of bright spots, and could have been helped immensely by some simple editing. Below is a more streamlined tracklist that jettisons the perfunctory interludes and soppy porno ballads. There weren't really any immediate singles on here, though - SuperBowl or not, it was never destined to be as successful as her past albums.
1. Sexhibition 2. Strawberry Bounce 3. My Baby 4. Island Life 5. All Nite (Don't Stop) 6. R&B Junkie 7. I Want You 8. Like You Don't Love Me 9. Thinkin 'Bout My Ex 10. Slo Love 11. Just A Little While 12. Put Your Hands On

How come I never commented on this?
LOVE this album. Drop "Truly" and the godawful "Warmth" and replace them with "Could This Be Love" and "Put Your Hands On" (how this excellent, sensual disco bop was only a f**king bonus track I'll never understand!) and you have an album as strong all around as All For You.
This, AFY and Unbreakable are just as enjoyable and solid as her 1986-90's albums.

If there's an album that sums up my senior year in HS it's this one. So many memories! One of my favorite albums ever! Nothing comes close to "Spending Time With You"!

Island Life Island Life Island Life Island Life
That song is my favorite Janet Jackson song post All For You. It's perfection with JJ + TL and Scott Storch creating such a lavish soundscape to just get lost in and Janet was going off after the instrumental break. Speaking of, the lush strings during that break just make me float into another plane of existence. The Gimme the good life outro with fading into waves crashing is just the perfect cherry on top of this eternal jam. This song alone was worth the $14 I spent at Circuit City to get this album.

Damita Jo is a very solid album. I was definitely more consistent than AFY. There were no apparent smashes on DJ, but there were plenty of strong songs. Had she not received such backlash from her super bowl performance, I think DJ would have spawned 2 top 10 hot 100 hits and 2 top 20 hits on the hot 100. And DJ would easily been 2x platinum (but not greater).
I do think Virgin and Janet handled the singles choices poorly. Since it was very apparent that urban was the only format that was going to support her, they should have released the urban material. For example, Spending time with you, Thinkin bout my ex, and R&B Junkie would have both done really well on urban and to my understanding--urban wanted those as singles. By the time Virgin got around to sending R&B Junkie to urban and urban AC everyone had moved on and the project was definitely over.

I hated this album for a very long time with passion. I gave it a listen and thought the songs weren't as bad. I like All Nite, R&B Junkie, Truly, and Island Life, but I still don't consider it a great record as her earlier albums. I think it's her weakest. I find it to be monotonous in its lyrics and theme. I can't stand Thinking Bout My Ex and I consider tracks like "My Baby" and "Like You Don't Love Me" to be filler quality. I think All For You was way better! Doesn't have that many sex tracks as DJ. It had more standout tracks in my humble opinion, and was a bit more versatile in its theme whereas Damita Jo is all about sex, sex, sex.

This is the album that led me to become a Janet stan and discover her catalogue. Yet this is posted in my top 3 Janet albums for eternity.
I remember... coming home from school, soon as I would come home, I would go straight up to my bedroom, I'dβI'dβI'd turn on Damita Jo, and do my homework right away. Listening to music. π€

It also debuted at #2 (behind Usher's "Confessions") - not #1. Deservingly so, Confessions was the much stronger album out of the 2.
