Q&A Interview - Mya, With LoveFebruary 14, 2014 Page 31: Happy Valentine’s Day Mya. I know for me personally, being that today is my birthday, the release of With Love is one of the sweetest gifts. What made you put it out today?Mya: Well first of all, Happy Birthday! Well, I’ve been recording now for years and years and I wanted to put something together for the fans. I made some resolutions about what this year is going to look like for me and that’s how it started. This is just my V-Day treat. P31: I noticed you didn’t chase any of the contemporary trends, and you’ve really evolved as an all-around musician with this project. Describe your mind state creating the project and the recording process.Mya: You know, I didn’t go into the studio saying I’m going to make a V-Day EP. I stay in the studio. I have a studio in LA and DC and I travel with a studio (laughs), so I’m always creating all kinds of stuff of all different genres and on every track there is musicianship and live music. There’s really nothing that I’m chasing other than putting people in the mood. That’s what music should be: an experience. That’s why I chose these particular songs around Valentine’s Day. P31: Speaking of setting the mood, Do It happens to be my favorite record on the EP—it’s a real sexy, sensual ballad. What’s your own favorite record on the EP and why?Mya: Wow! That’s really hard (laughs). I can’t tell you that I have a personal favorite, it just depends what mood I’m in because I chose these songs for different reasons. I like where each one takes me. Like A Woman takes me to a real intimate place but it’s also vulnerable. It’s really sexy, unplugged, Sade, 70s. House Party takes me to Chicago, stepping and what not. And Do It takes me to the after party behind closed doors. They’re too different to have a favorite. P31: I know were a little late for throwback Thursday but one of your biggest career moments was the Best Of Me Remix. You jumpstarted the jersey dress fad and created a timeless hit. What are some of your best memories of working with Jay to create that single and visuals?Mya: We missed Throwback Thursday, but were not too late for Flashback Friday (laughs). We actually weren’t in the studio [together] when that record was made, so there wasn’t much interaction. Doing the video was nice; it was in Malibu on a beautiful day. It was really simple. It was like the first video I showed up to do with no rehearsal, which was really cool to me. I was like, ‘there’s no rehearsal? How is this going to work out?’ But it was very simple, memorable and beautiful and I got to work with one of my favorite directors still in Hype Williams. P31: You’ve become an icon for celebrity fitness over the past year. There was a controversial article that came out not too long ago about black women not wanting to work out due to hair concerns and other miscellaneous issues. How do you manage to stay beautiful and fit?Mya: You know I have been guilty of that, I’m going to tell you that (laughs). I don’t even get my hair done when I’m trying to get my body together unless I absolutely have to be somewhere. Hair is very costly, and if your getting it done for $2,000 or $200 and you just left the salon and it has to be presentable all week at work, I understand that. Sweating can change the texture, sweating can mess up the cut and presentation, I get it cosmetically. But if I need to get some work in, I wrap that in a bun real quick. It’s a little different for me because when it’s time for me to get dressed, it’s time for me to get dressed. Hopefully they’ll be an invention that comes out that can preserve a hair style while you workout hard core but another thing is that you don’t even have to break a sweat to get some strength training in. Working out in 15 minute increments throughout the day can totally tone your body without having to run and break a sweat. So there are a lot of new work outs that I’m looking forward to sharing with girls through the Notorious.IM app. P31: Now I saw a Baller Alert interview with you at the 2013 BET Awards and every man from Robin Thicke to Kevin Liles, to Bobby Valentino who did a faux proposal on camera, video bombed your interview. At that moment you flashed what looked like a wedding ring in the interview, so I was just wondering if you tied the knot? Mya: I don’t own any wedding rings, no, I did not tie the knot (laughs). Maybe I was wearing a ring but it wasn’t a wedding ring. If I held a ring out, it was probably just to be a deterrent. P31: Well how do you handle all the male attention in the industry?Mya: I wear a ring, I just wear a ring (laughs). That’s how I handle it, just what I do. P31: Everyone always talks about how they should make an Aaliyah biopic, and who should play her. I always think of you because you dance, sing, act and were one of her contemporaries. Would you ever take on a project like that?Mya: That’s a sensitive area for me…because we came up together. She was about 15 when she hit the scene and I was 18, so I was a little bit later maybe 2-3 years later. Because we were sort of in the same category and often compared, it’s very uncomfortable and her death really affected me. I didn’t even want to come out of my house and record because I would think, ‘why not me?’ When you’re competitive or people often compare you, which they always do, it starts to get to you and you become guilty for your own existent. In my shoes, doing that type of thing might be a little difficult but if her family approached me because they felt I was most qualified being that we came up together and I know the industry at that time, I’d do my research but that’s not something I’ve ever thought about. So I’m not sure, but she is definitely missed! P31: Before I let you go, in honor of the holiday, what is the best Valentine’s Day gift you’ve ever received and given?Mya: The best Valentine day gift I’ve ever given? Oh! I gave it to myself. I took a trip. I said I’m not waiting on anybody to court me or make me feel like I’m loved. I’m going to love myself. So I brought my own plane ticket and paid for my whole trip for a week to the Caribbean. Did some meditating, working out and nice eating as well (laughs). That was probably the best gift because I was a little broken hearted and said I’m not going to let that happen to myself. Now what I’ve given? Hmm…what have I given on Valentines Day? Well I think it just happened today. I’ve always wanted to release something to my fans because there’s been a slight lull lately. With Love is an extension of myself out of love, for all of my fans that have been waiting for it. P31: Will we see some accompanying visuals for the project? Mya: The type of visuals that you might see are some live, intimate concerts within my studio. Really personal stuff that I haven't done yet for my fans. Behind the scenes stuff as well as candid videos. Follow @missmya on Twitter and @kissmya on Instagram and contact Mya on the new Notorious.IM lifestyle advice app.

She should work with Bobby Brackins who did "My Baby" by Zendaya. That record's new and it goes off. He should do her single. I could also see her doing a record with Rico Love or Missy.

Vibe Vixen
Vixen Chat: Mya Shares a Secret and Dishes on ‘With Love’
No love, no relationship?
Well I got love around me in different forms, but I’m not in a relationship.
It seems that your new 4 track EP was inspired by love.
Well yeah, you know I stay in the studio. A couple of them I did in 2012 and I did in 2013, so you know I thought those were more appropriate for February 14th in particular, so that’s why they sound the way they do.
What inspired you to drop an EP of Valentine’s Day?
It’s crazy how God works. I always drop something on Valentine’s day or Christmas for my fans whether it’s some merchandise, a single, a nice little independent video, an album…I said “You know what ? I have all of this music just sitting around; let me talk to the producers and see what I can work out as an independent artist.” So I talked to Yonny [The Producer]…He did three out of the four tracks and I worked with Antione Hart. We started chopping it up and we all just sat down talked about it and I agreed that maybe not to give people too much, but something as an appetizer; short, sweet, simple for Valentine’s Day and those just happened to be the pieces of production that I thought worked well together.
I personally gravitated towards “Space.” It was a very cool way to look at wanting to be around your man and not wanting space for him. So how did you guys work that out in the studio?
Well Latisha Hyman is out of New York. We got together on the writing tip first to discuss what we wanted to talk about. The concept was totally opposite of what it is right now though. The first concept was I need some space and I said, “why don’t we flip it and make it we don’t want any space. I need you to suffocate me more. I need you to elevate me in this relationship; don’t be afraid to take me to a higher place because that’s really what it’s supposed to be. Don’t pull back, I’m ready.”
Which track is your favorite?
Honestly, I can’t tell you because they all represent different flavors and different things. I would have to say “Space” is more unplugged and it does feel like space to me. I love live band instrumentation and I love ’70s pimp music, so that’s what that is for me. Now “Like A Woman” is a little bit more vulnerable and softer and it’s acoustic so they don’t compare. I like that from a lyrical perspective and a personal perspective. “House Party” is just a sexy groove, but it makes me want to do a two-step and actually dance with somebody, but not get ratchet. And then “Do It” is the after party after the party, behind closed doors–where things can happen.
What has been the fan’s reaction?
I can drop something really wack and my core fans would probably like it because it’s been a minute since I released something [laughs], so they’re just happy to have content. But the general consensus is that they’re very proud of this growth, the maturity, the grown and sexy factor, some of the lyrics and the flavor musically because I don’t think they’ve heard me deliver this type of style all in one package. The package is very small, so it’s not chasing anything. It’s nothing like the international albums or mixtapes I have, but it’s just Mya being Mya and I think they understand that.
Will there be any music videos for this EP?
It’s always a possibility–I’m kicking around some ideas. Me and my guitarist got snowed in the studio the other night and we had to shovel our way out, but we were doing some filming in the studio just really intimate. Maybe a little unplugged but really personal–like from my living room or something.
When will we have an album?
I might not call it an album, but it might be an extended EP or a couple of different EP;s but definitely a lot of Mya. I can’t really tell you what it’s going to b,e but you are going to get content from me in 2014.
Will you be incorporating dance into your new work?
Well, that’s always the goal. My focus is just to make an incredible album first and make sure I have the right team players around me before I release an album professionally, majorly or independently. Dance is always going to be in my regime.
How is it being independent?
Independent has it pros, but it also has its cons. Independent –you know there’s a lot of pressure [because] some people’s expectations from you, but it’s a wonderful market to be in because you can directly connect to your fans and not have interference of maybe a company or lose control of who you are as a person and get lost in the shuffle. I’m going to be honest with you–it’s very expensive for one individual and it can be very stifling if you are not quick to do that as a human being by yourself. You gotta be a stone cold hustler and you gotta go out and get it how you get it, but you also have to have team players that are willing say, “I understand your position, I understand that you’re not the world bank, but let’s try to get there together.” Everybody can’t be charging you 100k a track–that’s not how it’s going to work, otherwise it’s not going to come out.
What’s one of the greatest lessons you’ve learned?
Oh Gosh, I could write a book[laughs], but I think staying true to who you are-even if that means that you have to actually take a break to figure out what your truth is. Getting your mind and spirit right are more important than anything else because that’s the tool that’s going to attract things. If you are not being true to yourself ,then expect to attract what you’re projecting. Get to know you; you might love to sing, dance 0r do make-up, but if you are doing it for the wrong reasons, you will always be in the system of chasing for the wrong reasons and probably leave feeling empty, not satisfied, or fulfilled because your soul is not in it.
If you can work with any 5 artists– who would they be?
Oh my goodness. I would want to work with Lauryn Hill–she’s an incredible writer. I’ve been listening to The Miseducation [of Lauryn Hill] recently and I have a newfound respect for it as a grown woman. It came out when I was a young girl and I still have to look up certain words in the dictionaries and do some biblical references. Secondly, Prince– that’s always been on my list; incredible musician and performer. Quincy Jones as a producer always intrigued me. You’re probably going to laugh at this one, but I’ve always wanted to work with Dolly Parton as a songwriter. It’s so hard to be simple sometimes that I think people everywhere can relate to and she’s a genius at being real. I guess on the newer side, I really love “All of Me” by John Legend. He’s a great musician, so I would like to sit down with him and write something different.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
Did you know I was a vegetarian? I’ve been a vegetarian for years at a time, but this year I made the permanent change because I’ve been on and off and then I go vegan starting in July. Now it’s a part of my life commitment.

You Know I Got Soul Interview
YouKnowIGotSoul: You just released your new EP “With Love”. What inspired the release of this project?
Mya: What inspired the release of “With Love” was the date February 14th which is Valentine’s Day. It marks the 16th anniversary day where I released my very first single. Every Valentine’s Day or Christmas, I release something exclusive to the fans under the radar, but this year was a milestone so I was like “Let me release more than just one song.” I put a little EP together abruptly, it was about two weeks prior, but it is music that’s been in the archives forever. It’s stayed in the studio and I’ve also been recording. That’s how it was compiled.
YouKnowIGotSoul: I noticed the EP had more of an R&B sound than your “Sugar & Spice” and “K.I.S.S.” albums. Was that done by design or an indication of what’s going to come?
Mya: Well I record all kinds of different music and genres. I felt because Valentine’s Day is surrounded around love and the fact that people are just hungry for music and to the love theme, these songs worked well together. One was acoustic and one was more neo-soul. The last one “Do It” was more contemporary and “House Party” was a throwback to R. Kelly and that Chicago two step. So they’re all a little different, but they do have the root of R&B.
YouKnowIGotSoul: You mentioned you’re always in the studio recording and it’s been 16 years since your first album. What’s the biggest difference recording back then and now?
Mya: Let’s start with technology-wise. Recording today versus recording back in 1997 when I recorded my first album, I recorded to something called two track tape. We had to be precise on how we were recording. We had to rehearse before we showed up to the studio. We didn’t spend time in the studio writing the songs. We had to be prepared to go in and knock it out. Nowadays, you can take as many days as you’d like with pro tools and different kinds of software through the laptop. The process is a little different nowadays. I still appreciate it though. Compared to the earlier days, the technology is lot more advanced. You can do things in the bathroom of a hotel room and they actually sound great with different plug-ins. It takes less time and there’s a lot of music that’s out there today whether it’s Hip Hop or whatever, it’s usually done right out the laptop. It’s pretty cool.
YouKnowIGotSoul: Your last two albums released first in Japan. What made you go that route?
Mya: Doing a business in venture in Japan started my independency as an artist. I had just the left major system. My album that was slated to come out in 2007 “Liberation” was accidentally leaked in Japan by Motown. They forgot to tell them to recall the CDs when we changed the release date. That just came out in Japan digitally and they were like “Hey we’re interested in you. Come over here and do some exclusive work with us in this one territory. We love the album you just put out.” I didn’t technically put it out, it was a mistake. But I was like “I can spend some time in court fighting the label or I can take this independent route.” The opportunity came and I decided I would take advantage of it and see what it was all about. I would get to own my own masters and produce my own records and cast the producers that I would like to work with. So I creatively got involved over time and something that the major label system was involved in at all times. There was absolutely no interference for me to have a meeting or two and pick some records out after I’ve recorded them. I began to develop a team of writers, producers and musicians. It was a new experience for me and it’s really helped me evolve as an artist. That phase of being international, it helped me develop my show and just recording in the studio. It was just a business move. The “K.I.S.S” album which was the last album I released in Japan, I did a US and a Canada version as a well as a World version.
YouKnowIGotSoul: We always hear that Japan has a huge appreciation for R&B even when the US doesn’t tend to appreciate it. What is your Japanese fanbase like compared to your US fanbase?
Mya: It’s hard to say. I’m not a girl that studies numbers. They’re very receptive though, I can say that. They’re receptive in the US as well, but I think they have expectations as far as where I’m from. I’ve done a lot of records in the US earlier in my career and then I went overseas. They’ve always been receptive. Japan follows American culture musically a lot and they welcome dance-offs. It’s huge out there. They’re very receptive to all kinds of culture around the world and it was education for me. It’s a melting pot for music.
YouKnowIGotSoul: In the US, you’ve had multiple platinum albums out and you’ve won a Grammy award. Do you feel like you get the credit you deserve here because you’ve done so much?
Mya: I’m not really looking for the credit. I really think that I’m just starting as a real artist now. I think everything else was just an education and great experiences and a wonderful opportunity for success based on how it was defined by other people. I haven’t had my own success yet. In my mind, I’m just blossoming and just learning so many things that will happen with time and experience, but it’s been an education. It’s like going to grade school, middle school, high school, college, getting your degree and pursuing your career. I’m now pursuing my career as an artist. Everything else was an education and it was just school to me. I’m just beginning now. I don’t really look for credit.
YouKnowIGotSoul: Where are you at with your artistry? You’ve said that it’s like you’ve been in school, so what’s your creative process like now?
Mya: When I look to create, I’m actually an artist. I pull from real experiences. I’m inspired by other things, other people, documentaries, movies and films. I have a global perspective on people and culture, religion, politics and things that are outside of me. Then there’s the love life or lack of. You pull from different experiences, but they’re real whereas when you’re 16 in the studio, you’re being fed songs. I’m also assembling different kinds of things whether it’s casting people or talent from the area I grew up in which does not have a lot of opportunities. I’m just trying to make other people’s dream come true and seeing that is worth so much instead of being on the road all the time. There’s passion like never before and it’s not mechanical. It’s really real and I’m able to bless other people’s lives and they bless mine. It’s an experience and there’s so much learning.
YouKnowIGotSoul: What’s next for you?
Mya: Some music to be general. I did a film last year that may be coming in 2014 depending on the powers that be. I really enjoyed the role. I played a marine biologist/lieutenant in the movie. It was a kick ass role. There are other things like my foundation and training for a marathon this year to keep my body together. I’m also a vegetarian. It’s just some personal things I’m working on outside of music.

I wonder what film it is that she's talking about. Her last screen credit on IMDb is "The Penthouse" in 2010.

Sweet XVI Press Release April 16th , 2014- New York — @missmya is at it again! Grammy Award winning recording artist, MÝA will release her highly-anticipated, follow up to February’s With Love EP with a second EP of 6 brand new songs, SWEET XVI, on April 21st, available for pre-orders on iTunes now! MÝA will celebrate the 16th anniversary of the release of her self-titled debut album, Mýa, on April 21, 2014 with the release of Sweet XVI, an EP executive produced by MÝA & Grammy Award Winning Producer, Yonni. Fans can expect MÝA‘s signature sexy sound, while offering a few surprises along the way. One of those surprises being her collaboration with GRAMMY award winning artist/songwriter, Eric Bellinger featured on her lead teaser titled “Same Page.” MÝA also features new talent on the testimonial record “Unbreakable” introducing rapper Mike Check, produced by Antione Hart. MÝA rose to fame at the age of seventeen years old and it’s been a great few months for the multi-platinum, quadruple threat, singer, songwriter, actress and dancer, who is celebrating her sweet sixteen by setting the stage for the next chapter of her career. 2014 has certainly been Sweet for MÝA so far, from signing with talent agency ICM, releasing her “With Love“ EP, which received much acclaim from outlets such as NOISEY (VICE), THE LOS ANGELES TIMES, COMPLEX and BILLBOARD, to her involvement with “Ready for Hillary”, a Super PAC staffed by Obama & Clinton Campaign Staffers encouraging Hillary Clinton to run for President in 2016, to the recording of her 9th studio album, MÝA shows no signs of slowing down. The uptempo EP is a change of pace & the perfect vibe for Spring, following the strictly smooth “grown & sexy” R&B 2/14 release of MÝA’s “With Love” EP, celebrating the 16th anniversary of MÝA’s debut 1998 single “It’s All About Me.” On April 21, SWEET XVI will be a digital only, world-wide release… and that’s just the beginning. With MÝA creating an online buzz over the surprise Valentine’s Day EP and starting a frenzy amongst fans and supporters, MÝA’s indie label Planet 9 will manufacture a physical CD combining both EPs and bonus tracks for her fans, classifying this as her 8th studio album, exclusively available on www.myamya.com and all tour stops. It’s no wonder why MÝA is one of Billboard‘s Hot 100 Artists of the Decade. Embracing technology, MÝA partnered with mobile technology app NOTORIOUS so fans can actually text with MÝA anytime they want via the new app! More info onwww.Notorious.im, available in the iTunes store. MÝA also partnered with ground breaking merchandising company CapThat. (www.capthat.com) Showcasing her unique vocal range, production and songwriting skills the SWEET XVI EP is the epitome of both an independent woman and independent artist who is driven, powerful and business savvy. Beyoncé and Jay Z Cheating Rumors: Mya Denies Reported Affair With Rapper by Brett Malec Today 11:11 AM PDT Mya is staunchly denying rumors that she's Jay Z's mistress amid speculation that Beyoncé's hubby cheated on her. Earlier today, the Internet was ablaze with reports that Jay had been having a long-term affair with Mya. But as quickly as the rumors spread, the 34-year-old singer took to Instagram to swiftly put out the flames. In response to a user asking Mya if she was Jay's mistress, Mya wrote, "Never did, never was, never will. Illegitimate, thirsty sources with no facts and that's the ‘media' for you-especially today. I play second to no one, pay my own bills, have my own label, own management company, rely on God only and respect myself & marriage too much for nonsense." She continued, "False rumors are crafted for ratings & numbers. And miserable, unhappy people need someone to judge to deter the attention away from their own misery and feel better about their miserable lives. If they did it to Jesus, they'll do it to anyone. God bless." The Mya-Jay cheating rumors originated from a blind item posted online claiming the 44-year-old rapper had a longtime relationship with a "very short named R&B singer who hasn't had a hit in awhile and doesn't really even act or record any longer." "She basically lives off the generosity of Jay-Z and a couple of other guys," the post claimed. Mya aside, Beyoncé and her hubby have been at the center of cheating speculation since his Met Gala elevator brawl with Solange Knowles. Bey added fuel to the rumors this week during a concert when she changed the lyrics of her song "Resentment," her 2006 song about infidelity, to reflect the number of years she and Jay had been together.
