Oh boy I remember vividly those days :'( I was already a Stan. But LAP was the first cassette my parents gave me as a gift I hadn't asked at the time of my birthday (August 89). It was the soonest I had gotten an album from its release date back home. It was a gold experience. And I can still recall each song now although last time I heard it in full was probably ten years ago. Many good songs covering multiple styles, smart lyrics and quite good vocals. The order of preferred songs (based on their performance in my personal chart): - like a prayer (4 weeks atop, song of the year) - till death do us part (3 weeks atop) - express yourself (1 week atop) - cherish (#2) - keep it together (#3) - dear Jessie (#3) - oh father (#4) - Spanish eyes (#3) Didn't chart: - promise to try - love song - act of contrition TDDUP was quite an experience to me. My parents were on the verge of divorcing, and I had seen and heard different levels of violence in their relationships (mostly verbal but heard 'stories' of stuff flying and shit). So I would hear Madge's song sometimes repeatedly almost like therapy. She made a great vocal performance there. Interesting to me was that Express was not an initial favorite to me in its album version. However the video and remix versions completely turned my perception around and made me a fan! (I wonder if in the US there was a change in versions too) Dear Jessie is lullaby gold :) it's not jimmy jimmy ridiculous but pure cotton candy innocence on a song. Yummy. A time to just let your inner child be awake. Oh father was another solid vocal performance, lyrics and production ace. Like a prayer the song was magic!!! Her voice, her power, the ecstatic crescendo, great intro, gospel chorus, lyrics, genre mix, production and of course video was a historic moment in music. I remember talk shows dedicating a full program to Madonna and religion, controversy, etc. At my far I didn't see the fuss--I saw it as a great metaphor. I also loved KIT, and I was glad to see the US embracing a more hiphopish Madonna Btw, there are other top 10 singles not included in compilations: causing a commotion and hanky panky say hi!!

I should celebrate my 30,000 post by posting in a Madonna thread! www.metroweekly.com/soundwaves/2014/03/classic-album-revisited-madonnas-like-a-prayer-turns-25.htmlClassic album revisited: Madonna's "Like a Prayer" turns 25Posted by Chris Gerard March 5, 2014 Twenty-five years ago this March, after months of feverish anticipation, one of the most successful pop albums of the ‘80s hit stores with a whiff of patchouli and a heavy dose of controversy. Madonna’s commercial and artistic momentum had been building steadily since her first hit, “Holiday,” reached a modest #16 six years earlier. By the time 1989 had arrived and she was preparing to release her fourth album she’d amassed six #1 singles and was second only to Michael Jackson in the galaxy of pop stardom. With Like a Prayer she delivered a knockout that became a global smash, generated six hit singles, and sold millions of copies worldwide. Like a Prayer enjoyed critical acclaim as well as commercial success. Released on March 21, 1989, it spent six weeks at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart during the spring of ’89. A quarter-century later, Like a Prayer still holds up as an outstanding collection of top-notch material. Overall, as a complete piece of work, it is arguably the finest album of Madonna’s three-decade-plus career. The album was preceded by the release of the fantastic title-track on March 3. The single “Like a Prayer” did nothing to dampen expectations for the new album, and it quickly shot to #1 all over the world. The provocative video directed by Mary Lambert had religious conservatives in a tizzy and prompted Pepsi to drop Madonna from a major ad campaign (although all the pearl-clutching by those denouncing the video was surely more effective promotion than any advertising money could buy). The religious-themed clip -- which features Madonna tenderly kissing a black saint that she had transformed from statue to flesh and blood with a sensual caress of her hand, and then dancing amongst flaming crosses in a skimpy black dress while wearing a crucifix -- was condemned by no less than the Vatican itself. “Like a Prayer” is one of the great singles of the ‘80s and was brilliantly produced by Patrick Leonard. The sequence between 3:04 and 3:38 (on the album version) is particularly stunning. “Like a Prayer” includes a strong gospel element, and some commentators have noted a striking similarity between it and David Bowie’s 1986 single “Underground” from the movie Labyrinth (although even Bowie would have to admit that “Like a Prayer” is by far the stronger of the two). The title song and album opener set the stage for an assemblage of songs that are personal, strongly commercial, and brilliantly executed. Pop music doesn’t get much better than this. When you consider any two ‘80s singles that were released by an artist in secession, it’s hard to top the one-two punch of “Like a Prayer” and “Express Yourself.” Perhaps Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and “Beat It”, or Prince when he unleashed “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy” as the first two singles from Purple Rain-- but not many others even come close. “Express Yourself” is a jubilant dance/pop anthem of independence and individuality that remains one of Madonna’s signature songs. With a blistering horn arrangement and one of those classic melodies that seems to have been beamed straight from Heaven, “Express Yourself” became another massive single for Madonna, reaching #2 over the summer of ’89. It was held out of the top spot by two rather feeble songs in comparison that don’t hold a candle to “Express Yourself” in terms of cultural significance: Martika’s “Toy Soldiers” and Simply Red’s cover of the old R&B chestnut “If You Don’t Know Me By Now.” Just goes to show ya once again -- chart position isn’t everything. She follows “Express Yourself” with her quirky duet with Prince, “Love Song.” It’s clearly a Prince song musically and lyrically -- he’s not known to cede control in the studio (or anywhere else) -- but Madonna’s presence definitely blends nicely within Prince’s typically inventive vocal arrangement. It’s nice that a superstar duet wasn’t a made-for-radio love ballad, but rather an offbeat, funky little number that would have fit nicely on the album Prince released the prior year, Lovesexy. Next up is the jittery “Til Death Do Us Part,” an obviously personal song inspired by the well-publicized split between Madonna and her former husband, actor Sean Penn. Before turning darker, the music at first give the impression of a cheery pop tune, but it quickly becomes evident that’s far from the case. “Til Death Do Us Part” tells of a relationship that has disintegrated and become violent. Madonna delivers lines like “He takes a drink, she goes inside. He starts to scream, the vases fly” in an unsettling deadpan voice that sounds completely convincing. It’s a harrowing song that makes the listener feel like they are peering directly into the artist’s most personal thoughts and emotions. Next up is the melancholy piano-ballad “Promise to Try” -- she goes from the pain of a fractured relationship to the anguish of the loss of her mother. It’s a beautifully poignant song, and quite simple -- just Madonna’s voice over a piano and a tasteful string arrangement. She sings it beautifully and with real heart and feeling -- if you ever hear someone make the claim that Madonna can’t sing, play them “Promise to Try” immediately. There’s more to singing than hitting octaves -- conveying genuine feeling isn’t always about vocal theatrics. \After the emotional ending of Side One, the breezy, cheery “Cherish” is a nice mood switch to open Side Two. As the third single from Like a Prayer, the ebullient “Cherish” -- featuring a video with Madonna frolicking on the beach -- also peaked at #2 (at least this time she was kept out of the top spot by a classic, Janet Jackson’s “Miss You Much.”) “Cherish” has an endearing quality to it, and while it might not seem to have the emotional power of some of the album’s tracks, that’s precisely the point. Like a Prayer covers a range of emotions, and happiness and joyful love is one of them. The whimsical “Dear Jessie” is next, a merry little ditty with a childlike charm and a jubilant string arrangement. It was a single in some territories (not the US). “Dear Jessie” is sheer joy to play and adds beautiful color to the second half of the album. The light heartedness is necessary, as next she delves back into her more personal material with the stunning “Oh Father,” a powerfully confessional track presumably inspired by the strained relationship with her own father. Once again Madonna’s vocals are up to the task and hold up to the power of the song. Released as a single in the US, the dark and introspective track struggled to #20, her lowest chart showing in America since “Holiday.” That hardly matters -- “Oh Father” is a stunning reminder of how great pop music can be at its best. The high-energy “Keep it Together,” released as a single in January, 1990, fared much better commercially, rising to #8 on the pop charts and reaching the top of the dance chart. “Keep it Together” is something of a forgotten gem -- even though it was a Top 10 hit, it was omitted from all three of Madonna’s hits compilations: 1990’s The Immaculate Collection, GHV2 from 2001 and her 2-disc Celebration released in 2009 (one of only three of Madonna’s Top 10 hits to suffer this indignity, the others being “True Blue” and “Angel”). The sultry ballad “Spanish Eyes” follows, and then the album closes with the wonderfully offbeat “Act of Contrition.” It features portions of “Like a Prayer” played backward over a blazing guitar freak-out (widely assumed to be played by Prince, although he is not credited) and somewhat self-deprecating humor as she insists repeatedly “I have a reservation!” before shouting, “What do you mean it’s not in the computer?” Only Madonna would have the guts to cause a scene at the pearly gates. Like a Prayer has aged extremely well. The production is strong, and the songs stand the test of time. There really is no weak link, as the album veers from jubilant pop/dance to tracks that are intensely dramatic and personal. She would never again record an album this diverse, or with the depth and strength of songwriting on every track. Madonna is still enjoying an amazing career, and she’s never really put out a bad album (even MDNA has its positive attributes, and American Life is drastically underrated), but Like a Prayer is her crowning achievement. As Like a Prayer reaches the quarter-century milestone, it’s a good time to give it a thorough listen and rediscover one of the truly great pop albums of our time. U should put all this in Like A Prayer album thread pulsemusic.proboards.com/thread/138194/prayer-madonna

Bite your tongue, kingbee79. :) I love DJ- it's so whimsical, and quite Beatlesesque. The use of those strings and other instruments. I adore it. (It's supposedly was written for Pat Leonard's daughter, Jessie).

Love the look too! Sort of reminds me her free spirited look of the Ray of Light, Drowned World and American Pie videos. Any reminiscence to the ROL vibe gets me super excited!!

She is in the studio or maybe she is in a house recording. Thus the top secret. Artists record anywhere now I think. My question, is she recording with Avicii for his album, her album, is there only one collaboration song or will he be a large part of her album? Maybe I am overly anxious to know what's going on. I too hope the album is released in November of this year. The last time she did that was with COADF with a killer first single and video with Hung Up. Any way I look at it, I hope she delivers another quality classic.

Getting really excited! Maybe Avicii is her new Orbit? I like this pairing especially because I've considered Avicii as my favorite EDM ever since pre-True (Bromance and Levels are gold) and I think he has great ear, is creative and has a free spirit quality that has the potential for creating magic with M

^ I Agee and I really love Avicii's Hey Brother from True. He takes chances and uses real instruments mixed with electronically sounds that sound very organic dance. With some great lyrics, this can be a great album. I'm feeling good about this era.

Not many probably knew of Orbit before M worked him, whereas Avicii has enjoyed a decent level of success thus far. But, hopefully they are coming up with some good stuff.

MTV News | Robyn Takes Back 'Sticky' Comments "Who Am I To Judge Madonna?" Mar 13, 2009 Source: By Penelope Quinn Last week, more than a few media outlets reported that Swedish pop star Robyn was miffed at her treatment on the Madonna 'Sticky And Sweet' tour.
According to various news sites, including musicnews.virginmedia.com, the 'With Every Heartbeat' singer reporteded to a Swedish newspaper that she and her crew were given strict rules about how to behave on the tour.
Robyn reportedly said: "We were told not to approach Madonna, not to speak to Madonna and, above all, no pictures. I hadn't expected any glamour, but it's strange that they assume that the first thing you're gonna do is run after Madonna and ask for an autograph." She added: "My worst nightmare would be to turn into Madonna. Madonna is constantly chasing the latest trends."
The Swedish pop star also revealed she and Madonna never even met formerly during the tour.
She said: "It's very business, her management called my management, It's not like she calls you and asks you. "I don't know how Madonna got in touch with my music but I'm told she likes it, which is cool."
But seems like either Robyn's interview was taken out of context, or the singer had a lamentful moment and decided it was probably not in her best interests to trash talk the entity that was helping to deliver her music to millions.
Robyn has since sent in an exclusive statement to Perezhilton.com, which elaborates on her previous comments. "Seeing that a lot has been reported about my experience of being on tour with Madonna in the press, I feel like I have to tell it like it is! So with my own words, here I go:
I got a chance to go on tour with Madonna in Europe and like any one who's been a fan of her since the age of ten I was super exited. Contrary to what you might have read elsewhere its been FUN! I've played to Madonna's audience in eleven different cities, all of which have received us well even though I was only the opening act. Me and my band got to know Madonna's production team and they were very helpful. Madonna's management was super cool and we hung out with the band and dancers and had a lot of fun with them. When I met her at the end of the tour she was really cool and natural. I got a chance to thank her for putting me on and she even told me she was a fan! It was a very special moment i will never forget.
When I arrived on the first day of the tour I was surprised by the tight security that involved us as well. It took a couple of days to find my place on this big adventure but the tour has been a once in a lifetime experience. I have gotten the rare opportunity to see an enormous production from the inside and get the chance to perform in front of tens of thousands of people at every show.
In one interview I was asked if I wanted a career like Madonna's and I said no, my worst nightmare would be trying to be a Madonna. She's an icon and a pioneer, but only Madonna can be Madonna. It would be sad to try to copy her model. Times are different nowadays as well. Even if I tried, it would be hard to build what she has achieved in the climate of the music industry today. I want to be me and work from my own small independent record company.
I want to be left alone in my creative process. I imagine she has lots and lots of people telling her things. Every one watches her every move. Obviously she can cope with that, but for me that pressure would be a burden. Too many other people have cracked under much less pressure in the music world and as a woman it's even harder to stay at the top. The peer pressure, fashion mags and media celebrate youth, beauty and the new in females and most people are lucky to stay around for 5 years. I learned that next to the president of the United States of America, Madonna must be the most famous person on earth whose every little move is watched by millions and a complete security state is surrounding her!
Im from a little country called Sweden where even though a lot of people know me here, I still can go to the store and buy milk in my underwear. And I would love to keep that for me.
But who am I to judge her? Watching her on stage during the tour I could tell that she was really enjoying herself. She is probably doing exactly what she wants to do and thats why she is so inspiring. I want to be like that as well, I want to be myself."

I know this was a few pages back, but I just wanted to comment on the ageism thing.
Madonna really needs to combat ageism in the music industry by actually creating good material. She needs to stop saying she is pushing boundaries, and actually release boundary pushing material instead.
While I love that Madonna is continuing with music and ignoring the age critism, MDNA is exactly the sort of album that fuels ageism. She reinforced her own stereotype with the project.

Madonna refuses to conform to what most in society think a women should act, think, sing, dress etc. To be honest, if Mick Jagger or any older male recording artist released MDNA, age would never be an issue. Ageism and sexism is something she is defiantly against. Madonna said: "Not only does society suffer from racism and sexism, it also suffers from ageism." Thankfully, she will always be true to herself and more power to her for her bravery to do so. And I hope all female recording artist feel the same now and as they age.
