I live for "Everything Fades Away" - I love how they had the man responding in the bridge of the song.

Ugh Everything Fades Away is perfection. IMO it would have fit better with the ballads on Emotions.
Random-- I listened to "My Love" yesterday for probably the first time since it came out and I love it! Was that a hit at all on any format? It's actually super catchy and Mariah sounds amazing.

Oh no. Mariah sounds dry and dusty and is hollering ('EY!!) on that song. Not a fan, really. I actually was going to list it in my bottom 5 Mariah songs but there were other more worthy songs.

I can't listen to My Love without thinking of that ridiculous video. Everything about it is completely cringe-worthy.

I dunno what she gave me but she can feel free to take it back. I agree that the video was a mess too. Definitely not one of her finer moments playing hook girl. That award would go to IKWYW with Busta. He seems to bring out the best in the divas, as much as I can't stand him. He brought out the best in Janet too.

Side Effects honestly had everything going for it.
Sound: it had that grungy, gritty, yet video-game sound that was just becoming hot at the time. Right Round was a smash only a few months later with similar sound, albeit a faster tempo.
Theme: Mariah never released a song about her and Tommy's relationship that was so personal, yet also relatable to people beyond her. Domestic violence takes many forms, and this really shone a light on the emotional side effects that emotional abuse can take, even years later. It's a topic we don't talk about, but should.
Vocals: Not only does it showcase all aspects of her range (from the lower register verses to the runs that STILL give me chills at the end), but it was a song she could NAIL live. Nothing too majorly difficult to sing, if a little fast at times. But it didn't feature- nor need - the vocal acrobatics of her older hits which she, at times, has struggled with live recently.
Featured Rapper: Young Jeezy wasn't the biggest rapper, but he certainly lent some street cred to the track, which coupled with Mariah's status at urban radio at the time, would have really cemented her as an urban crossover artist, which is clearly what she has been trying to do since Butterfly.
In all, it was the perfect song to release.

I keep forgetting about "My Love". I like it, it's a nice little song. I haven't watched the video since it came out but I remember thinking it was hilarious LOL.

Ugh Everything Fades Away is perfection. IMO it would have fit better with the ballads on Emotions. Most of the songs on Emotions have a classic/old-school sound, and I don't think "EFA" fits that. I think it fits the mature AC/pop style of Music Box for sure, though. I was listening to it this morning! I love it. The way Mariah sells her part is phenomenal. I know what people mean about her dry vocals on the belting, but they aren't enough to bring the entire song down. I find it really catchy. I think the song was sent to urban formats, but it only peaked in the 30s. Such a shame.

Mariah sings the 2nd verse of the song and doesn't even really sing the hook on "My Love" (it's more so backing parts) so I don't understand your statement.

Loving the "Do You Think Of Me" love on here. It's easily one of my favorite songs from her. I remember buying the cassette single to "Dreamlover" back in the day (ahem, yes I'm old) and it was the b-side and it blew me away and still does.

I don't consider it her song and her verses apparently weren't memorable enough for me to even mention so that's what I meant. Glad you enjoy the song so much though!

While were talking about secret tracks, I had a mega jam session to Sprung and Secret Love before. Both could have been better singles than ILT and Say Somethin, if you ask me.

"Sprung" is hot as fuck! Took me a while to "get" that song but I love it now. It's become one of my favorites by MC. I think it's one of the most daring songs in her catalog in terms of its sound, which is why I love it. Also, MC sang the hell out of it. From what I've noticed, fans seem to either absolutely love or absolutely hate it. Oh and that song (along with "Irresistible") is my best friend's favorite by MC... because she says it's great to get high to. lol "Secret Love" is cool, too. If you throw "I Feel It" into the mix you can see why the TEOM era was full of win.

I want an album full of "Dedicated" and "Money ($*/...)" now. I'm still jamming as if they just dropped today. She really is the one artists that can blend in both the Pop and Urban worlds so effortlessly. My mission in life is to have some splashes with Mariah just once.

Music box is boring to me. Yeah some great tracks but overall too many middle of the road sappy shit. Too many perfectly sung but no personality filler it was almost like I was listening to nah nevermind. I'm too patriotic to go there but at least her voice didn't annoy me at times.

If "Secret Love" and "Sprung" had been on TEOM, it would have really changed the vibe of the album. As it is, TEOM has a classic sound to it overall, but something like "Sprung" is more futuristic. I think "I Feel It" really fits the vibe of TEOM, though, and should be on there.

I love how they made it like Mariah and the guys are just chilling in the studio and start reminiscing about hip-hop and sing a f*ck letter to it; personifying hip-hop was great. I also love how "dedicated" is used in two ways; Mariah is saying she wants to feel dedicated to music now, but she's also dedicating the song to old-school hip-hop.

I can see that as it definitely has a certain style, and it's one not everyone likes. That's why I wish "DYTOM" and "EFA" had been included; they would give it some different flavors. Thankfully I can correct that with new technology. "DYTOM" provides some pep, and "EFA" is more emotionally mature than the other ballads on the album. Having said that, Mariah's voice on Music Box is incredible to me. Her timbre is just beautiful, and there is a certainly loneliness in her voice that I respond to. It makes tracks like "Music Box" and "Just To Hold You Once Again" haunting to me.

I love Music Box. It was, along with Daydream, the only Mariah music I grew up on (my parents owned both albums on cassette and would play them in the car).
This album is a lot more AC/Pop than R&B, which is why many fans seem to rank it low compared to the rest of her discography. I understand the criticism in that sense. It's a great album though, IMO, for what it is -- a superb collection of ballads and monster vocal performances. For me there's no weak track on it, no filler, and the same goes for all of Mariah's albums prior to Rainbow.
The 1993-1997 years must've been AWESOME to witness as a fan, when Mariah was at the top of the world.

I'm surprised Billboard did not publish a Daydream 20th anniversary article.
They did it for the debut and Music Box...
