I saw this video a few months ago.--love the song writing on this and the video is really chilling as it's supposed to represent some of the anti gay attitudes in Russia since those propaganda laws. I love his other other sessions as well for that bluesy tone. He was with an indie label in Ireland but I'd heard that Columbia signed him. Very happy to see the US push begin on this.

I think I'm in love with this now. Lyrics are extremely well written and he sounds musically talented as well. Good stuff.

Just heard this for the first time on my local Alt station today. It's quite haunting, I hope this can take off on Alt.

Already Top 50 on alternative, a week before impact, and going head to head with Sam Smith for the top of the AAA chart! I can't wait for Hozier to get his chance on pop too!

This song is crazy good. My friend and I heard it on the radio for the first time a few months ago and we have loved it ever since. Glad it's about to break alternative.
Edit: just watched the video. Holy crap. Great statement piece.

As a Christian, this song is slightly offensive. It's so sad that an artist like Hozier views the modern day church in this light... sadly, many do.
Most people think of Christianity as a "religion". It's so sad because Jesus despised "religion". It was the religious leaders of his time that put him to death. Christianity is about a relationship with Jesus... at least for me it is.
Unfortunately, If this song takes off, the average non-believer will probably take it's anti-church message to heart. That's a shame.

There are a lot of Christians who take everything in the bible for face value and don't actually understand the lessons portrayed in it. A major point being that homosexuality is a sin, which I think isn't actually stated in the bible. People just misinterpret lines, then pass down what they read and believed to their children, and so forth. I think Hozier is trying to make select Christians who misinterpret the bible to become self aware and realize their views and beliefs are a lie and inhumane.

The song is a condemnation of both individuals who corrupt the teachings of Jesus, and also the historical silence of the Catholic church in Ireland in addressing unspeakable evils committed in the church's name (pedophilia, infanticide, homophobia, etc.) I would think this song would be celebrated by those who understand and value the teachings of Jesus, and value their personal relationship with Him.

I first heard this song when he performed it on Ellen and I loved it, so I went to YouTube to check out the studio version and saw the music video. It's a tough watch, but very well done. I think he has a great voice and I love the melody. I think the lyrics are great and I agree with A2Townie and Devin said about them. Glad to see this song doing well for him so far on Alternative.

Tied with The Dirty Heads' "My Sweet Summer" for worst song in the Alternative Top 40 IMO.

Tied with The Dirty Heads' "My Sweet Summer" for worst song in the Alternative Top 40 IMO. Can I get an explanation? I personally think it's cool dark song with powerful subtle protests written in fabulous fashion.

I agree, I like how dark and brooding the song is, I think it's a great fit for Alt. Not even close to the worst song on the chart (which is Heaven Knows IMO)

I personally think it's cool dark song with powerful subtle protests written in fabulous fashion. I just find it incredibly boring, and I can't get into it. I've probably heard it about 5 times now and I find it keeps getting worse and worse. And don't get me started on The Dirty Heads. They've been a huge pet peeve of mine ever since "Lay Me Down" became one of the longest #1s in the history of the format.

So it's just boring to you; and you're not arguing about it's actual quality. Fair enough. I won't contest your hatred for The Dirty Heads lol. I don't even know how they're still relevant with a name like that. I actually don't mind a few of their singles, but they're just catchy, not well-written or genius.

Additionally, I actually like 33 of the 40 songs in the top 40, so not liking one automatially puts it among my worst Dislike: My Sweet Summer, Take Me To Church, Black Out Days, Take It As It Comes Haven't Listened: Bridges, Beware Of Dog, Step

Not too big on this, but at least it's slightly better than "Riptide". These AAA crossovers have been doing little to nothing for me.
Also, the lyrics "I worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies" bothers me. It probably wasn't his intention, but as a Christian, it made me feel a bit uneasy.
And I'll also concede that this isn't the worst song on the chart right now. For me, that's "Habits" by a margin, although there are a good 8+ songs I'd rather not see charting here.

Takes over the top spot on AAA, should remain there for the official update. 17 on Alt, impacts HAC 8/25/14.
