By 'killing' the song means: whether the video is too bad for such a great song, or the video doesn't match at all with the song
Some examples:
Katy Perry - Dark Horse not a bad video, but the video really doesn't match with the song at all pretty sure, most people expected a serious dark-themed video (witch/goddess/massacre-theme), NOT a fun & cheesy Egyptian-Cleopatra theme. But oh well, Katy is mostly a fun artist...
Mariah Carey - #Beautiful the most potential-hit-worthy Mariah single in billion years, killed with again and again a very immature love my body-themed video, she's making a mistake again with her latest single, You're MIne (Eternal)
Britney Spears - Gimme More a super duper lazy video for her comeback hit. Even her vma performance is far more interesting than the music video. I heard that different theme (funeral them) was actually planned for the song though.
Xtina - Not Myself Tonight i love the song but the vidoe is a HUGE turn off. Yes, it's a Madonna tribute but she tried too hard. Sad, because it could be a massive comeback for her...
I'll think more..

Lady Gaga's "The Edge Of Glory" and Nicki Minaj's "Va Va Voom". Both could have been much more successful with better videos.

"Alejandro"
I still don't know wtf that was. Did not match the vibe of the song at all.

Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball. Made me go off the song entirely.

Historical example: "Rock Me Tonite" by Billy Squier.
Now, I still like the song myself, but I can see why the video wrecked his career in the 1980s.

Lady Gaga's "The Edge Of Glory" and Nicki Minaj's "Va Va Voom". Both could have been much more successful with better videos. I thought the video for "The Edge Of Glory" was fantastic. Who doesn't love dancing in the street? "You And I" though... THAT was uninspiring. The only thing that inspired was pothead drag Gaga. I nominate "Gorilla" by Bruno Mars, though. That was pretty uninspiring as well.

Basically every Kelly Clarkson video after "My Life Would Suck Without You" (though I think "Catch My Breath," while basic, is effective)--"Dark Side" and "I Do Not Hook Up" being the worst offenders.

Now you know that was DOA upon arrival but i really didnt think the video was bad or played a role. It was uneventful but it was a cute video and she looked adorable in it.

By 'killing' the song means: whether the video is too bad for such a great song, or the video doesn't match at all with the song When I saw the thread title, I assumed "killing the song" would be defined as the video release causing the song to suddenly fall out of favor with the public and it collapsed on radio and sales. There will be plenty of people who liked certain music videos that others absolutely hated, and vice versa.

Do What You Want - Lady Gaga feat. R Kelly Self explanitory. There is no video though! It can't be considered a video if the video never happened/wasn't released.

I think the purpose of the thread is to identify songs which had an objectively negative impact on the performance of the song, not to rattle off a list of "songs I like with a video I don't like" or "songs I liked until I saw the video".
Anyway, I'm pretty sure the video for "Tip Drill" had that effect on the song (though I believe the lyrics were already controversial enough).

Do What You Want - Lady Gaga feat. R Kelly Self explanitory. There is no video though! It can't be considered a video if the video never happened/wasn't released. Exactly. It hurts sales to not have a music video.

Every Mariah video after Touch My Body. I think "Obsessed" was the one exception. It definitely received a lot of hype for the Mariah in drag scenes.

I don't think the song stood a strong chance at being a hit but a really good video could have at least pushed it further than it did. It was the only Britney single to barely get a bump in sales after it's video premiere.

How about the video for "More Love" by Kim Carnes? What was happening in that video? It looks like it cost only $2 to make. It's like they went into the restaurant and filmed it there after dinner.

Taylor Swift/Gary Lightbody-The Last Time,I'm a Taylor fan but yet another tour video and this was the 2nd of the "Red" era.Kinda the least memorable single of the "Red" era. Britney Spears-Piece Of Me,A lazy video from Britney and this won VMA for Video Of The Year. Justin Timberlake-Take Back The Night[Could of been more successful with a better video] Most Recent Enrique Iglesias Videos,All Same club type videos.

Well, it was 1980. And I don't think it could have "killed" the song; not only did it become a top 10 hit, but a year before MTV not that many people got to see it anyway.

Britney Spears-Piece Of Me,A lazy video from Britney and this won VMA for Video Of The Year. "Piece Of Me" was actually one of the better videos from the "Blackout" era, especially following "Break The Ice". Nice video, but it didn't really help the song as much as it should have. Speaking of Britney, I nominate "Radar" from her.

True, but in terms of the definition of "killing" that leoapp provided in the original post, I think the video is really bad for such a great song and is a total mismatch.

Any time a good song gets a lazy live video. Or that Korn video where the song was about bipolar disorder and the video was about naked rodeos.

Carrie Underwood- All American Girl
I realize the concept was supposed to match the light-hearted tone of the video, but it just didn't work for me. It came across as cheaply made and cheesy to me.
Carrie Underwood- Just A Dream
I found this one to be underwhelming, and it didn't quite match the emotional impact of the song for me. Dixie Chicks- Top Of The World
This one also didn't pack much an emotional punch for me, or do justice to the song itself. I'm generally not a fan of artists playing characters in their own videos, either.
