I still feel like this will eventually blow up. I hope so. I didn't dislike "Royals" or "Team" but they were just kind of radio filler to me. "Tennis Court" is the first song I'm hearing of hers that draws me in; easily her best so far imo. Chart accordingly!

Agreed - when I first discovered Lorde last August, I was more interested in Tennis Court as opposed to Royals

'Team' is amazing. 'Tennis Court' is also really great. 'Royals'...I could take or leave. As stated above, when I first discovered Lorde, I was much more interested in TC than I was 'Royals'.

When I first discovered Lorde, I was much more interested in TC than I was 'Royals'. Yep. And then I liked Team more than both.

I've always thought TC was the best out of the three.

Yeah add me to the list of the surprised by how this has done so far, even if it eventually takes off.
Granted, it's not as instant as Royals and Team, but it's not far off from their catchiness, and certainly not enough for it to be limping outside the top 20 at this point.

I love the album and this is a good song, but it's probably among my least favorites.

While I love Tennis Court so don't agree, but wanted to comment I think this is first time you professed love for this album? or I missed it? Yasssssssss. Very few debuts come out and instantly make me a fan, it was that good!

Back in the days like the 5th single, but now the girls have such a short attention span.

I honestly think what's hurting this now is what's going to hurt Iggy Azalea's "Work" if it's her third single as well. "Tennis Court" was already a single before "Royals" blew up. When "Royals" did blow up and Lorde became something people wanted to look into and found more of, "Tennis Court" was one of the first songs they were likely to find as it was already a single and had its own video and other single treatment assortments. So many people have already heard this song and have been jamming since the fall, so this isn't that new to many people, possibly hindering it from taking off digitally because so many people already purchased it prior and on radio because it might be getting high burn rates in different stations' call out scores because of its technical "age" as a single. I think this definitely would have smashed as a follow up to "Royals," but after "Team," it may be too late for this one to really become the smash hit it could have been.
And because I know somebody is going to bring up "Set Fire to the Rain," I'll go ahead and explain why that's different. First off, that was Adele during the 21 era. Literally nothing is comparable to that. Adele was a freak of nature on the charts during that time period and no one could touch her. Secondly, "Rain" didn't have an official video before its stateside single release and still never really got one other than that live performance video. And finally, when people searched for more Adele after the breakthrough of "Rolling in the Deep," they were much more likely to discover "Someone Like You," the current European single at the time of "Deep"'s breakthrough in the states. "You" was of course the second single stateside and then "Fire" would have been discovered through that, making the obvious third single choice, well, obvious. Honestly, as much as I love "Team," I feel it was the wrong move for it to also be the second single stateside. "Court" should have came first and then "Team."

Honestly, as much as I love "Team," I feel it was the wrong move for it to also be the second single stateside. "Court" should have came first and then "Team." I think you're spot on here. Last summer when Royals started smashing, I decided to download it on iTunes. I heard some things about Lorde from Radio talk shows and what not, but I basically forgot her for a few weeks and only knew her from Royals. Then, I was scanning iTunes one day and noticed she released a song called Team. I liked the preview, so I downloaded it and quickly realized that it was even more amazing than royals. It was at that point when I realized she was actually an artist worth learning about, so I looked into her and found Tennis Court. I believe that a lot of people, particularly young people that drive pop culture buzz and iTunes sales, discovered Lorde in a similar way. Lorde had such the ultimate climax last summer that it seems to have doomed her later singles. Even though it's the current US single, Tennis Court feels like it already happened a year ago.

I think the biggest impediment to its success was the botched rollout of Glory and Gore. If they had just released Tennis Court as had been planned in March, I think it would have had a better shot.

Yeah, the confusion between this and "Glory and Gore" definitely hindered this to start at first, but it's more than evident now that "Glory and Gore" is not the single, so it should be exploding now, but alas, that's not happening.
