You see, I don't mind Clear Channel deals when it benefits songs that actually need it (unknown artists breakout singles) and not Katy Perry's latest by-the-numbers soulless bore of a song. As a counterpoint, this song was an international hit that had a TON of hype and buzz in the US prior to its launch. I mean, it was steadily in the 200-300 range on iTunes for many weeks before it really made any dent at radio. I agree that this isn't a bad use of the Clear Channel deal or as bad as a true radio powerhouse getting extra help, but it's not necessarily the PERFECT use either. These guys hit radio with far more of a leg-up than the average newcomer.

And it's different being a worldwide hit to a hit in the US. You can only go so far with hype. US radio usually needs more than a 200-300 itunes position range for a previously unknown artist (especially when they aren't American).

It's curious how this switch from being practically ignored to getting way bigger updates than their success on itunes should translate

It's curious how this switch from being practically ignored to getting way bigger updates than their success on itunes should translate It's not curious; as Libra said they're being showcased by ClearChannel's On The Verge. Other recent new acts who began there include Nico & Vinz and that heinous Katy Tiz girl. Basically, it's been gifted incredible exposure; now its up the song's own merits to swim (like "Am I Wrong") or sink (like that awfulll "Bang Bang" or whatever flop). I'd put my money on this making a solid connection though.

Well, that explains a lot. Am i wrong received a lot of support out of gate, but the song reacted extremely well to that support. This is doing way better than The big bang but not even close to Am i wrong, so could go either way

Other recent new acts who began there include Nico & Vinz Actually didn't realize they were boosted out the gate as well. All things considered, it still strikes me as legalized payola that I don't think should even be; I also think that it shouldn't have to take stunts like this to get radio to notice hot up-and-coming songs. US radio in general probably needs a complete overhaul...but, that's a whole other topic. And can someone point out for me what exactly is "house" about this song? ??? I've seen a couple posts to this effect, and I'm just not hearing it.

I've seen a couple posts to this effect, and I'm just not hearing it. I guess it stems from the fact that that's the kind of artist they are. I think their fusion sort of vibe makes them sound less 'housey' than most - they do have more of the electronic sound and their classical twist as well. But the basic four-on-the-floor beat is still there mostly. Its more evident in songs like "Extraordinary" or "Mozart's House" but I suppose if you have to categorize "Rather Be" it would go under house - in the broadest sense

I just think in the case of this song that the fusion sound leans more toward pop than house. A unique and unusual pop sound grant you, but still pop nonetheless. I'm sure we've all noticed how parts of the electronic melody are nearly identical to parts of the one found in "Lights" as well.

I've seen a couple posts to this effect, and I'm just not hearing it. It's a type of house called 'deep house'. Disclosure is really the only other popular artist that I can think of that falls under this category. It's like a mixture of funk and soul with a dance flavor.

I'm sure we've all noticed how parts of the electronic melody are nearly identical to parts of the one found in "Lights" as well. I agree with that. It is a 'popier' sounding track on Clean Bandit's part. I tend to lump it into that sound with "Call Me Maybe" but "Lights is a good example as well. I guess I'm just hung up on what Clean Bandit represent as a genre. That said, I like to think its a dance-influenced pop song - because, really, given how broad the genre is, what does calling something a pop song really tell us? At any rate, it's a great sound for a potential breakthrough Stateside, which this is really shaping up to be so far. At the end of the day, I'm hoping this is opening the door to more house-type stuff crossing over.
