Not to begrudge him success, but I'll be upset if he takes attention away from Hozier, who is the soulful singer much more deserving of US attention. Hozier's first US single is smashing AAA right now, and he has a headlining US tour this May. There are very different songs. Take me to church is a very good song and definetively could work on pop, but before that must chart in hot ac (probably). Being a hit in AAA is probably even less reliable as pop crossover than Urban. Red Hands was a big hit on AAA, even top 20 on Hot AC and decent itunes sales and never cross to pop. The song is doing well on AAA but it's not top 10 yet, and its sales are low right now. The video is very dark, i really liked it would great if a song like that can chart on pop. Anyway Hozier is doing better than Tom Odell, i really love Another love but never gain steam. Of course Let her go failed to reach top 30 on AAA in its first atempt Sam Smith has an easier path. He did the Bruno Mars route (on a lesser scale) and get two hits as featuring artist. And this song even more destined (at start) to AAA and Hot AC, is less edgy to pop than Take me to church. The fact that the song is doing well on itunes make it very plausible this end being a hit on pop Anyway, i don't think this could be the case of one artist blocking the other. Maybe they have things in common but both songs are very different

As much as I love this, Nirvana would have been a better choice. This, while being incredible in its own right, I can't see connecting with the GP. The choir is gonna hold it back. Just send Nirvana out and service the Harry Fraud Remix to Urban please. I think he's the type of artist that they don't know how to market. He's essentially a pop artist, but not the Katy Perry or Jason Derulo paint-by-numbers type, but more of an organic pop artist. He leans urban in some ways; he leans adult alternative/Hot AC in other ways. This cross-format appeal is a blessing if you're established but kind of a curse if you're brand new and don't have that one "Royals" type song that equally covers all of the bases. "Money On My Mind" would appeal most to Pop and Rhythmic. "Nirvana" would have been good for Urban AC with a small shot at some Pop play. "Stay With Me" covers the adult alternative and pop bases, which I guess is the demographic that downloads from iTunes the most. It makes sense... but if this DOES break, it's going to be a bit more difficult to switch gears and market his R&B side afterwards. I don't think any of his songs can be successful on alternative radio. Probably on triple A, but not the main alternative format. In the UK the alternative/indie music scene pretty much ignores him, I think because the rest of his songs like Latch, La La La, Money On My Mind, Lay Me Down are other genres (house, R&B, UK garage).

From the little I've heard of Sam Smith (from SNL) he & Hozier do not seem like the same type of singer so I'm surprised at the comparison. Hozier is much more of a Bluesy Rock singer. I'd see him going the alternative route and maybe trying to cross over to pop. Sam Smith has more of an R&B edge to his sound. They're also at two different stages of their career.
Sam Smith is poised to break out now. He's apparently a big deal in the UK and he has an album coming out in June. Hozier on the other hand, has an EP that he put out several months ago and another EP that's been released in the UK but hasn't reached the US yet. He's just attracting notice in the UK and not quite star status there yet. He's also not expected to have a full size album out until August. The promotion being done for him is a lot softer right now. I've yet to even hear him on the AAA in my area (Chicagoland) so he's not getting the full push that Sam Smith is getting. I doubt Smith's promo will have any effect on Hozier.
ETA: Sam Smith sounded good on SNL but I thought the choir was just a little too much for this song. I think it overwhelmed the song.

TBH there's something about his voice that, after SNL and then hearing the two songs again in studio version...I find that I like him less. I'm not a fan of the choir in this song at all, and the extra soul or whatever it is in his voice is actually too much for me.

Well he is called the male version of Adele. That's what his US label imaged him as in his first stateside press release. I wouldn't say he's organically "called" that. Does Adele do urban or house records?

Does Adele do urban or house records? Well, you know, people like labels. And linking him with a succesful artist could make him marketable. The songs i heard from him are from a very wide spectrum. In my opinion he is pop, but pop with multiple influences. Right now it seems pretty clear people like the song. A performance on a popular show bust the sales, but generally an practically unknown singer don't go as far as number 4 if the song didn't pick some interest. Now we'll see what will happen on radio charts. Lately radio is only fast to pick shitty viral songs, but not that fast with songs that are doing well on itunes from "serious" artist. Human is struggling with updates even doing well on itunes and Christina has two previous medium hit songs. I don't think the fact he is a featured artist in two songs will influence, because Latch and La, La, la, are very different from Stay with me

At some point it was at 3 on itunes. Probably it will start to drop, but it was a big enough splash to gain so radio attention (or at least that's what i hope)

I don't know why, but I just keep waiting for this song to break out into "NEXT TO MEEEEEEEEE WHOOO HOOO HOOO," and it never does, and I'm disappointed each time.

Didnt they JUST add "The Man" as well? Some wouldn't call it such a bad thing that they waited so long on that one. ;)

Top 50 (44) on AAA.
I think this is going to be big. It has a decent position on itunes even with the low airplay

Does Adele do urban or house records? I dont call "La La La" and "Latch" house tracks, theyre more Garage than anything...I agree with your statement though. *** How is this doing? I've heard it on radio a few times.

This song is great, a perfect schmaltzy Spring/Summer ballad.
Also, I would stan the hell out of an Adele House track.

Darkchild remix is now under Cool New Music - from a cursory look, I think it gets released with the UK single.

I hardly hear any difference between the original and the Darkchild Remix... They sound nearly the same. Maybe a different drum pattern on the remix.

I don't hear much of a difference either, maybe only the sound of an organ over a piano?

This is extremely boring, I can see it being big but not as big as "Say Something."

"Stay With Me" is Clear Channel's CHR choice for On The Verge this month, so expect bigger updates to roll in for it relatively soon.
