This may be an unpopular opinion, but I'm really tired of boring ballads being released to pop radio. Last year was okay, "Stay" and "When I Was Your Man" were both decent songs. But this year is just awful. First "Say Something," which I couldn't stand. Then "All Of Me," which was only tolerable with the Tiesto remix. And now we have "Stay With Me," a song which I can't get halfway through because it just bores me to death. And all of these are smash hits?! I just don't get it. This kind of attitude is very dangerous to have in the Pop world, because it leads to a near-monopoly of uptempo songs filling the chart, with many of them sounding basically the same. Oh wait...we did that already, in 2010 and 2011. Having said that, I'm not really a fan of this particular song, either. Last year's piano pair, OTOH, I rather enjoyed.

Change the dates and this conversation could have been had in the early 1980s. Too much similar sounding disco in 1978-79 led to a backlash, with a surplus of soft, often dull AC ballads that lasted until about 1982.

Latch is totally eclipsing this on the radio, at least in Los Angeles. I was shocked when KAMP started playing Stay With Me but they immediately switched to Latch, same with KIIS. It's Disclosure's song but still, everyone knows it as Sam's.

Pop:44 25 SAM SMITH Stay With Me 2459 860 1599 17.176 + 187 spins - 7 bullet + 0.950 AI HAC:20 18 SAM SMITH Stay With Me 1897 1556 341 11.28 + 37 spins + 17 bullet + 0.343 AI Triple A:11 9 SAM SMITH Stay With Me 350 312 38 0.903 + 9 spins + 9 bullet + 0.032 AI I honestly think "Latch" is only eclipsing "Stay With Me" purely on shelf life. The former is way older and set to go recurrent in a few weeks. "Stay With Me" JUST STARTED last week.

I can stand a lot of unsubtantial uptempo songs about throwing your hands in the air while you are having a party, but only if there are songs different than that at the same time. There are not that much ballads right now, and frankly most ballads that are successful are very good (something that i can not say about uptempos). I like the chart a lot more when there are some rock, r&b and alternative songs on the chart. To be honest there are a lot more bland teen acts on the chart right now than adult ballads. Anyway, i'm sorry you don't like the song, because i think you won't be able to avoid it in the next months because this is going to be very very big

Latch is not even the most successful Sam Smith collaboration right now (that's La la la), in fact Latch only get a resurgence recently when it seemed pretty stalled. This will be ahead of Latch in terms of airplay in a couple of weeks (in fact in its short life in the chart Stay with me had a kind of big updates that Latch never had in its long run)

I'm honestly more impressed that this, "Latch" and "La La La" are coexisting as well as they are. I mean, 2 features and 1 lead, and they're all his first three hits.
Sam Smith will be a monster hit machine in the near future.

I could definitely see this getting an "All Of Me"-type remix soon.

You think maybe the Dance/club sound is really your preferred music rather than overall Pop? No, because there are dance/club songs out right now that I don't like, "Latch" and "Summer" being the main ones. I think my preferred style of music is stuff that's very melodic while also having a beat to it - which is why I'm a fan of bands like 1D, Maroon 5, etc. Of course, there are plenty of exceptions, but I tend to hover around music like that. Songs like this are hit and miss - I like some, I don't like some, and I can't put my finger on what exactly makes me enjoy a ballad.

Of course ballads are not that big right now, but in recent times there was a few successful ones, and people like this song since it was released. He will get his second solo number one in UK today. Probably since George Michael there was no male singer who was able to navigate from dance tracks to ballads so easily

But the young crowd is not the only one who buys singles, in fact the young crowd is not the main radio audience or the ones who buy albums. Appealing to the pre teens and teens is great but if you don't appeal to people older your career will be brief. And people said the same about Adele and we knew what happened. The song is on itunes for quite some time, and had very good sales even with little airplay

Callouts are in for this one already. Not a strong Positive performer, but not quite horrible. And it's also the fourth-least disliked Pop song currently (third not counting "Boss Ass Bitch"). Plus, callouts don't usually come in this early in a song's run...

Yes, because this is just his second week as a top 50 hit.
One thing that is positive is that the song is selling well even before getting airplay. Songs like Love me again (wich is great) failed to have sales before airplay gave them exposure, on the other hand Pompeii got into the billboard hot 100 way before getting played on pop stations.
He seems to connect really with a part of the audience, Leave your lover even went number one last week after the release

Its too early. It just came out.Its got a great start but will it have longevity? Its actually been out for months. It debuted at pop radio two weeks ago. And it was first released on iTunes the week of his March 29 SNL performance. It went Top 5 the next day, which was by far the biggest spike for an SNL recording this season. I don't know a single person who doesn't like this song (other than a select few people trying to be hip on the Internet). It's not as expertly crafted as John Legend's "All of Me," but it's going to be a solid performer at radio. And Sam Smith, himself, is undoubtedly here to stay. When Taylor Swift pushed him on Twitter in February, virtually no one in America knew who this guy was. He's since been part of a clear hit, a developing hit and this potential Grammy contender.

Most-added with 21 adds. I don't get it... why are the adds so low this week? Not sure if it's final yet or not, but I expected the number to be rather low anyway. Nothing big hit this week - the only official impacts were Enrique's "Bailando" and Bleachers' "I Wanna Get Better." Neither struck me as a surefire pop hit. And songs like this one have already had their biggest launch weeks. Now it's just about filling in the gaps.

Adds were updated. Now second-most added with 29. That's what I'm seeing as well. It's second on both Mediabase's monitored and unmonitored updates. But does anyone know why HitsDD is reporting it as the most-added? It seems to always differ slightly from Mediabase, but it never explains its methodology or gives add counts.
