And back in the physical single/b-side days, Billboard made the determination based on price, track number, and running time. The Smashing Pumpkins' "Zero" single had too many original b-sides on it, and ran too long, so Billboard charted that single as an EP on the BB 200, instead of counting those sales towards the Hot 100. And I think that's why international singles in that era had more b-sides from them, except that one and BWBW, which originally just had one. The same thing happened that year with Big Me by the Foo Fighters.

Pretty good numbers for Christina Perri, honestly. She hasn't really had a big hit since "Jar of Hearts."

'Frozen' vs. 5 Seconds of Summer for No. 1 on Billboard 200Australian pop/rock band 5 Seconds of Summer is eyeing the top of the Billboard 200 chart, as its new EP is on course for a handsome debut. The four-song set, "She Looks So Perfect," was released on April 1 and may sell upwards of 140,000 to 160,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, April 6 (according to industry forecasters). That could be enough for the Capitol Records set to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart -- the top 10 of which will be revealed on Wednesday, April 9.Standing in 5 Seconds of Summer's way could be the soundtrack to "Frozen." The Walt Disney Records album is in the running for a ninth week at No. 1. In the week ending March 30, "Frozen" sold 161,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan, securing an eighth week atop the Billboard 200 chart. In the week previous, it sold 202,000 -- its best week ever.5 Seconds of Summer gained notoriety last year after opening for One Direction on the bulk of its arena tour. They'll join the group again this year, as their opening act for the Europe, U.S. and Canada legs of their stadium tour, starting May 23. (Both acts are managed by Modest! Management.) Other albums heading for sizable debuts next week include Christina Perri's "Head or Heart" (40,000 to 45,000) and Chevelle's "La Gargola" (40,000 or so).

It looks like Frozen could pull on upset if 5 Seconds of Summer comes in at the lower side of its predicted range. Should be exciting!

Who would've thought that Ms Veronica Mars aka Kristen Bell would be a vocalist on an album that is snatching right now?!

Oh crap, I forgot about that one. It's currently THE wedding song right now. On a personal note, I can't stand that sappy song. Wish Turning Page from that album got the attention instead.

YOUR TOP 15: The race for #1 heats up this week with Capitol's 5 Seconds of Summer providing a solid challenge to Frozen, Disney's powerhouse soundtrack. I notice they keep lowering the numbers for 5 seconds of summer ( I believe last week they were expecting 180 to 200K). it looks like Frozen may beat it after all.

I remember when I was hoping Frozen would sell 300K total and then I remember when I was praying it would get one week at #1. I had no idea it would become this big. It is like when I was estimating 2 million sold total for Adele LOL.

^Yes, Lorde's at 1,137,000. I'm sure LTIT knows that. Just an error here.
I think he means Miley Cyrus has passed Daft Punk!

CAVEAT LECTOR: Our current chart hasn't even finished building yet (psst: Frozen), but we already have some early, early buzz about next week's biggest release. Based on extremely preliminary numbers, Capitol's 5 Seconds of Summer looks set to move in the neighborhood of 170-180k. Of course, much can change between now and then, and we'll keep you apprised. The band's EP, She Looks So Perfect, sits at #1 at iTunes as of this posting. (4/1p) shouldn't the title thread be changed based on this?

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6039675/frozen-may-chill-for-ninth-week-at-no-1-on-billboard-200'Frozen' May Chill For Ninth Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | April 04, 2014 7:18 PM EDT The "Frozen" soundtrack may maintain its icy grip on the Billboard 200's No. 1 slot for a ninth week, so say industry forecasters. Forecasters suggest the Disney film soundtrack could sell another 140,000 to 145,000 copies in the week ending April 6. That may be enough to block the likely highest debut: 5 Seconds of Summer's EP "She Looks So Perfect." 5 Seconds of Summer may sell around 130,000 to 140,000 copies of its EP, which should secure it at least a No. 2 arrival on the Billboard 200. The top 10 of the new Billboard 200 chart will be revealed on Wednesday, April 9. Since Nielsen SoundScan's point-of-sale data began powering the Billboard 200 chart in May of 1991, only 12 albums have spent at least nine weeks at No. 1. Other possible high entries on the new Billboard 200 chart may include: Christina Perri's "Head Or Heart" (40,000 or so), Chevelle's "La Gargola" (40,000) and country duo Dan + Shay's debut album "Where It All Began" (30,000). On SoundScan's Building chart (below), 5 Seconds of Summer is No. 1, followed by "Frozen" at No. 2. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants. Perri and Chevelle are Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, while Dan + Shay round out the top five. Shakira's self-titled album is No. 6, Nickel Creek's new "A Dotted Line" is No. 7 and Johnny Cash's "Out Among the Stars" is No. 8. (Nickel Creek's new effort may not finish in the Billboard 200's top 10, but could sell around 20,000 for the week.) Pharrell Williams' "G I R L" is No. 9, and Manchester Orchestra's new "Cope" closes out the top 10 at No. 10. Like Nickel Creek's album, Manchester Orchestra's set might miss the top 10, as it might sell 18,000 to 20,000. NIELSEN SOUNDSCAN BUILDING CHART Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title 1 NEW 5 Seconds of Summer "She Looks So Perfect" 2 1 Soundtrack "Frozen" 3 NEW Christina Perri "Head Or Heart" 4 NEW Chevelle "La Gargola" 5 NEW Dan + Shay "Where It All Began" 6 2 Shakira "Shakira" 7 NEW Nickel Creek "A Dotted Line" 8 3 Johnny Cash "Out Among the Stars" 9 5 Pharrell Williams "G I R L" 10 NEW Manchester Orchestra "Cope" The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

BOTH COOL, BOTH HOT: Disney’s Frozen is set to rule the HITS Album Sales Chart once again this week with about 150k, while Capitol’s 5 Seconds of Summer will grab #2 and 143k. Both titles will hit the weekly finish line with about 10k more in sales than last week’s numbers would’ve suggested. Stay tuned for details, and keep watching our chart until it closes tomorrow.
