So their criteria for being able to pull off a Beyonce is having a lot of Twitter followers and never tweeting?

So their criteria for being able to pull off a Beyonce is having a lot of Twitter followers and never tweeting? I know right? It's so random. For it to be a 'surprise', it has to be someone who is working on their album in secret and for all practical purposes, the general public is unaware they are doing that. It is known that Adele and Taylor Swift are working on new music and it will be released in the near future (Taylor's new single release is around the corner). Unless they were putting the album out suddenly, then it could happen, but it seems unlikely.

I think that after a year, if no big name pulls this trick, she could do it again. That would be B-yon-d fabulous.

About 2-3 weeks prior to even the invitations for the Apple Press Conference were released, there was a rumor that U2 was going to attend and release their album during the conference. The extent of it being FREE was not known until today, but all other details including producers were already established. This album wasn't "without warning" like Beyonce was. There was an inkling of something happening today unlike that on December 13th. When you look at the live blogs many of the commentators kept hinting and wondering when U2 was going to come out since they did it before with the Product (RED) line of Apple iPods 10 years ago.

Also, as it's a free album, will a "pulling a U2" be something that fuels speculation about future releases?

I doubt some of the people mentioned were even "pulling a Beyonce." Beyonce wasn't the first to have this type of release, and artists like Skrillex and Wolfmother depend on a core fan base more than someone like Beyonce. They fit more in line with the artists who did it before Beyonce.

And my point was that Beyonce wasn't the first to drop an album in that way. Just because someone does something similar now doesn't mean they did it because of Beyonce. My Bloody Valentine did it with an album before Beyonce, and David Bowie did it with a single. Whose to say Wolfmother didn't see the reaction among MBV fans and went for it? Considering neither act is as big as Beyonce, it would be weird for them to think what worked for her would work for them.

What I don't understand about these comparisons is that we all knew Beyonce was working on an album. The frustrating part was that she wouldn't release any damn single but had them used in commercials and shit like that. We heard Grown Assed Woman and the initial Bow Down incarnation. So it's not like she came out of the blue. I'd say that U2, Weird Al Yankovic and Beyonce are in the same category of surprise release. Beyonce's extra was that she released a freaking VISUAL album, so in that sense WAY and her are closer, but still U2 released the album, a video, a single all at the same time. So it qualifies as a surprise full album release -which is what 'pulling a Beyonce' means to me.
