YOUR NEW RELEASES: Frozen will retain the #1 spot next week and could well remain there until mid-May, when either Mariah Carey or NOW 50 will likely take over the top spot. Both titles are currently scheduled for release on 5/6 and will bow on the HITS Building Album Sales Chart on 5/12. Here, meanwhile, are this week's key debuts: Black Label Society (eOne) 25-28k SoMo (Republic) 23-26k MercyMe (Fair Trade) 20-22k Martina McBride (Sharon's Rose/Vinyl Recordings) 20-22k I thought Lil Wayne had an album coming out on 5/5 or 5/6. Not anymore? I thought that was going to be the sure #1. No, that was proved false weeks ago.

Everyone thinks Adele is going to sell a boatload again. This will be one of the most exciting releases to watch, whenever that day comes. History has shown that the follow-ups to those monster, once-in-a-decade blockbusters usually peter out pretty quickly. Tapestry - 10x Platinum Music - Platinum Jagged Little Pill - 16x Platinum Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie - 3x Platinum Come Away With Me - 10x Platinum Feels Like Home - 4x Platinum All of those first albums came out of nowhere, won Grammy's for Album of the Year and each sold over 20 million copies worldwide. I've mentioned this a few times before. Everyone seems to think the next Adele album is a guaranteed smash because 21 was with millions in first week sales and months at #1 but I think the odds are against it.

^I don't think anyone is expecting 8xp+, but 2 million scanned is very possible.

Adele's audience is so broad though, that she really appeals to everyone and anyone. If they follow the same formula as 21, I can see her doing really well. Alanis' music is very grating to the geriatrics, Norah's was a borefest to the youngins, but Adele has a sound that appeals to most.

I do think Adele will be a "disappointment" no matter what she does because even if she sells 6 million worldwide or something it will always look bad compared to 21. I do think she will sell briskly and still be considered a success if compared to anything except her last cd.

Adele's next album will probably have disappointing sales compared to her last, but will still blow most acts out of the water.

Black Label Society, SoMo To Heat Up Billboard 200, But 'Frozen' Expected To Stay At No. 1
By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | April 11, 2014 6:08 PM EDT
Black Label Society, SoMo To Heat Up Billboard 200, But 'Frozen' Expected To Stay At No. 1 Black Label Society
As previously reported, the "Frozen" soundtrack will likely spend a 10th week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart next week. The album will easily outpace the rest of the chart, as industry forecasters suggest it could sell more than 130,000 copies in the week ending April 12.
That should push the album pass the 2 million sales mark total, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Through the week ending April 6, the album had sold 1.9 million.
The new Billboard 200's top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, April 16.
Outside the No. 1 slot, the highest debuts will likely come from a group of new releases including Black Label Society's "Catacombs of the Black Vatican," which might sell between 25,000 and 30,000 copies. The rock band's last studio effort, 2010's "Order of the Black," debuted with 33,000, according to SoundScan, and entered the Billboard 200 at No. 4.
SoMo's self-titled second album could start with around 20,000 to 25,000. The R&B/pop singer's 2012 debut, "My Life," missed the Billboard 200 but reached No. 24 on our new artist albums' chart, Heatseekers Albums.
Veteran Christian band MercyMe could also start in the low 20,000-range with its new album, "Welcome to the New." It should easily bow at No. 1 on the Christian Albums chart.
Martina McBride's new covers album, "Everlasting," might sell around 20,000, as well. The collection features the country singer's takes on largely pop classics like "Suspicious Minds," "If You Don't Know Me by Now" and "Wild Night." The set also includes guest turns from Kelly Clarkson and Gavin DeGraw.
On SoundScan's Building chart (below), "Frozen" is No. 1, followed by SoMo at No. 2. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking, reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants.
As for the rest of the Building chart: 5 Seconds of Summer's debut EP "She Looks So Perfect" is at No. 3 (after debuting at No. 2 this week, with 143,000 sold) and Black Label Society and McBride place at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Pharrell Williams' "G I R L" ranks at No. 6, followed by Shakira's self-titled set at No. 7; both have peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Luke Bryan's former No. 1 "Crash My Party" holds the No. 8 spot on the Building chart, with a surge in weekly sales expected after he co-hosted the Academy of Country Music Awards, broadcast on CBS, on April 6. MercyMe is at No. 9 and Florida Georgia Line's "Here's to the Good Times," which has peaked at No. 4 in its 70-week Billboard 200 run, rounds out the top 10.
NIELSEN SOUNDSCAN BUILDING CHART Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title
1 1 Soundtrack "Frozen" 2 NEW SoMo "SoMo" 3 2 5 Seconds of Summer "She Looks So Perfect" 4 NEW Black Label Society "Catacombs of the Black Vatican" 5 NEW Martina McBride "Everlasting" 6 9 Pharrell Williams "G I R L" 7 5 Shakira "Shakira" 8 15 Jason Aldean "Crash My Party" 9 NEW MercyMe "Welcome to the New" 10 19 Florida Georgia Line "Here's to the Good Times"
The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

Billboard has "Crash My Party" by Jason Aldean at #8. I wonder if it will end up passing "Shakira" by Rihanna for #7 when the full week has finished.

LOL
Rihanna should have called this album something other than "Shakira"
Probably could have too, if this was indeed her album.

Norah Jones' follow-up album did scan 1m+ in its first week, though. In this sales climate, though, I don't know if Adele's album will do that much in its first week.

The "sales climate" in my opinion has done nothing to erode first week sales of blockbuster albums. Even today, if you put out something people want they will come.

You can also add on Michael Jackson's Bad, which when it came out in 1987, didn't sell anywhere near the phenomenal amount that Thriller sold just a few year earlier.

I was just talking about its US success in comparison to Thriller, which was just as I stated; it did not sell anywhere near the same amount in the states as his earlier album did. And it may have done better with the singles, but that's not how albums are generally measured as success or failures; it is by how much the album itself sold. Not that I'm saying Bad was a flop either, of course it wasn't. It just didn't do as well sales wise as Thriller did in the USA, his home country. As for the rest of the world, that might be a different story.

If Adele's upcoming album sells "only" let's say 4m it'd be the best selling album in recent years still (since '21')

Basically, it is safe to say there is no follow-up to a blockbuster album that has done better. Adele's next one won't do 10 million and spend 24 weeks at #1 but it will still be huge.
Of course it depends on how you define "blockbuster". An example I can think of, "Off The Wall" by Michael Jackson had 4 hits and is considered his best album from a critical standpoint. The follow-up was of course "Thriller"

I'd consider Shania Twain's "The Woman In Me" a blockbuster and "Come On Over" outsold it, but that's an anomaly.

And then Usher had big albums before Confessions but that became his best seller.
And of course, the follow up didn't live up to expectations.

You can also add on Michael Jackson's Bad, which when it came out in 1987, didn't sell anywhere near the phenomenal amount that Thriller sold just a few year earlier. It still sold over 30 million copies worldwide and had huge success with the singles, so I don't think that's a fair comparison at all. That's kind of the point. It isn't fair to compare a follow-up album to a massive selling one. In the case of Alanis and Norah's followups, both were still pretty big sellers and significant hit albums on their own but, particularly in Alanis' case, they're viewed as disappointments. I've seen Alanis' album referred to as a flop as well. I don't think Adele's album will flop by any means, but will probably still get the label of flop when it fails to reach 2 million in a quickly fashion. I think at the end of the day it'll probably still be one of the biggest selling albums of the year it ends up getting released in but I don't believe it'll sell like the third coming of Jesus and earn all of these hits that people are thinking. Just because a star is invincible for one album, doesn't mean that invincibility will stick just because. Of course, Adele could pull a Shania though in looking back I'm almost wondering if she did in a way. Depending on how sales for The Woman In Me played out, if it sold consistently through the run of Come On Over's sales, TWIM could have been her (albeit much larger) 19 and COO her 21. Either way, in Shania's case. Come On Over is viewed as her massive album (which downplays the incredible success of its precursor, which is strange) and its followup Up! sold less than half of that (but I think is still at 3 or 4 million? maybe more?). So, of course it's all relative and in the end, it's a wait and see game. When Adele comes back though, she won't be the only artist on the charts singing ballads anymore.

Adele has way more in common with Carole and Alanis, which are the two that should be focused on. All three are singer/songwriters who were in their 20s when they released global blockbusters filled with songs about heartbreak and the sting of youth. Seriously, it's amazing how similar the material is on all three of those records.
That's why she is comparable to them, and not Michael Jackson and Shania Twain.
