I was expecting something different as well with Ed acting it all out, but that would have been too obvious and expected. The dancing was really great though. I think they had the dancer doing the interpretive dance for the duration of the video to tell the story of Ed's own journey from rags to riches, or his rise from obscurity to fame. Ed popped up briefly in the middle like he was watching all this unfold so it could work in that context. The various surroundings became progressively more affluent as the video unfolded, perhaps showing him getting more successful or gaining things along the way. And then there was the different clothing in each scene as well. Like he began shirtless with old shoes and worn jeans in the first scene, then he got a tank top in the next one, then traded the old shoes for sneakers, then the scene with the young woman with the pizza could be symbolic of a relationship he had and then it ended, but he got something out of it, and then there's the plaid shirt and better pants. Then him going into the pool could be a symbolic cleansing after a dark time, possibly after the breakup. Then he makes it to the mansion towards the end and changes into a full suit and tie, showing him reaching the pinnacle of success. Then him lounging in the pool showing him sitting in the lap of luxury. My other interpretation is that he got out of a bad breakup and reached the lowest point of his existence and slowly he is picking up the pieces of his life and getting better (the addition of better clothes shoes, better surroundings, of course these are metaphors and symbols of him getting better) and then he has a brief relationship that doesn't work out but he survives it and is better than before than gets back to and even above where he was before the original relationship had imploded.

See, I have the exact opposite opinion on this song not having the "f**k" in it. I almost feel like it doesn't go hard enough. I don't want a 'rager' or whatever, but I think that having the "f**k" kept in would make it have more of a bite. "Don't f**k with my love" works better for me. I get where you're coming from, but I disagree. Kind of like how the explicit version of Cee Lo Green's song has more of a bite.

I still maintain that Cee Lo's song is built around the titular phrase and does not work nearly as well without it. Same with "Payphone." "F**king Perfect" and "Tonight" (Enrique) are just as effecive without it. In Enrique's case, I think it works better as "Tonight I'm loving you."

They are blatantly copying Sia's strategy for this video.

I agree with Disco🌶️📖 , I never think of it like this, but once I hear someone's interpretation of it, I think it's f**king genius! And I tend to like clean versions more, so I like this clean, but I can't really judge as I haven't heard the unreleased explicit version... and I like Forget You, but I could go either way with that song tbh... Payphone sounded awkward with the cursing, as did TIFY... definitely needed the clean edit for those two

They are blatantly copying Sia's strategy for this video. But Sia didn't even show her face in that video though. Videos not featuring the actual singer lipping the song as part of the storyline are nothing new though.

I'm not so into Ed's stuff, but this one is the exception so far. Being said that, I agree with most of you because I really want an explicit version for this. It feels like something is missing.

Swearing words generally sound totally absurd (hip hop and rap sometimes seem to maskarade the lack of inspiration with a swearing word after the other). There are cases (Creep by radiohead or What it's like by Everlast) when the swearing words seems justified, but generally sound like a kid trying to sound adult

Within the context of a confessional song such as this, profanity used could fit in naturally and not feel forced. When I think of songs where it just didn't fit, P!nk's "Perfect" comes to mind.

I like the video. Certainly not what I was expecting, but it works. He's done the minimal appearance/no appearance thing before (Give Me Love, The A Team), so it's not new for him and definitely not him trying to ape Sia or someone else's strategy. For some reason, I thought of Juanes' La Camisa Negra when watching it.
The song is still one of my favorites of the year.

I'm going to predict that this will start soaring soon.
Why? The callout scores just came in for this. LOTS of love for this - it debuts with a whopping 65.12% Positive rating, which might be the highest I've seen yet for a debut week this year. It's also easily the least-disliked song on the chart; Negative is just 14.83%.
Sooooooo, yeah. :)

Just heard this on the radio for the first time, sounds great! Possibly better than I thought.
Here's hoping this outdoes Sing. I love his album and it's insane how hard he is slaying right now, especially in the UK.

Just heard this. LMFAO he dragged Ellie through the mud, but uh.... didn't totally sell that she was worth it. She wasn't that into you, dude.
I feel like he's the type to talk about his ex on a first date.

I still can't stop cracking up each time I hear this. I just like to picture how Nightfire would defend his disgraced muse if he were still posting here. dbhmr can you imagine it? ANYWAY: Calvin & Rita, Ed & Ellie... thank goodness these Brits are importing their drama along with their music to our pop chart. Definitely adds some spice to the place.

I'm guessing they will probably do a ballad for the third single. Probably in November sometime to carry through the winter and do 1 more up beat song for the spring 2015.

Have you checked out the album tracks section lately? They confirmed Thinking Out Loud is the third single, it has already been pushed in Austrailia.

ANYWAY: Calvin & Rita, Ed & Ellie... thank goodness these Brits are importing their drama along with their music to our pop chart. Definitely adds some spice to the place. I can't ever get interested in Ed Sheeran but this made me listen to the song with the lyrics pulled up. What in the wordy hell? I was fairly annoyed at the general verbosity on my first listen, and so I decided to watch the video thinking the visuals would distract me, but that was sort of a wtf moment, too, but the beat and vibe of this song started to sink in. I don't know, on the fence with it as a final product--I don't think he pulls off the speedy-word verse as well as Jason Mraz can, especially since the verses are basically a diary story lifted onto a melody, but the chorus has a great feel to it and the organic production of the song is excellent. The censorship is really terrible and ill-fitting here. I liked the A Team for about five seconds last year and had no use for "Sing," so I would say this is probably the best I've heard him, but I'm still not yet sold. But yes, the schadenfreude at Nightfire's internal meltdown is rather warm and fuzzy.

I don't usually care for Rick Ross but I like him on this. I am glad we finally got the explicit version of this song via this remix. The profanity fits in nicely and it doesn't sound bad at all.
