It seems like many, if not most, of today's popular dance songs have this really annoying "machine gun" sound in them. For example, it's at 2:18-2:21 in this video: youtu.be/RpSODtccEq0?t=2m17sReally annoying when you've got headphones on and you've heard it in about 10 songs in a row. > Ouch, my eardrums. Maybe it came from the crappy dubstep fad. Sorry, just had to vent.

Sorry, just had to vent. bahahaha, I clicked on the video, and actually I was expecting a lot worse! *lol* There's wa-a-a-ay more obnoxious and over-used sounds in dance music (and esp. EDM) today that I hate a TON more than this effect, trust me This is small potatoes

I personally dislike the vacuum cleaner and fart noises that are many of the electro synth breaks in songs.
I am encouraged by the recent House revival.

I actually don't mind snare builds in EDM, honestly, because it's at least viable in other genres. I can definitely think of worse.
- The "glossy" compression that makes a lot of already perfectly crisp synths sound like needles in your ear. It's like editing a photo. At some point, you actually lose quality if it's too sharp. - The bizarre obsession with white noise builds. I actually have no problem with incorporating white noise into music, but it's been abused improperly for some time now. Thankfully that seems to be going out. - The obsession with exclusively happier melodies, which I don't quite understand. - The whole slow build + minimalist drop formula. They sound ok, but there's not a consistent energy and it's incredibly frustrating to hear out and about. - The whole 4/4 to 3/4 or 8/12 or whatever shift. Makes absolutely no sense, although Richard Vission pulled this off pretty well in his mix of 'Work Bitch'.
I think in general, my biggest pet peeve is that there's very little variety in the genre. Maybe I'm "purist" or whatever and stuck in the last decade when we had Junior Vasquez, Dave Audé, Jody Den Broeder et al. who all had distinctive styles without deviating from the typical dance formula. These days I wonder why multiple mixers are even commissioned, because most likely the entire package is going to sound garishly similar to not only itself, but everything else.

- The obsession with exclusively happier melodies, which I don't quite understand. This infuriates me in particular, and is the main reason why "EDM" (i.e. dance-pop) music has fallen out of favour so much with young males in the past few years imo. Armin Van Buuren and Tiesto's latest hits sound like they could be a Carly Rae Jepsen or Katy Perry song. Songs like Titanium, Starships, We Found Love, Summertime Sadness, etc. are bordering on nursery rhymes. Most guys I know think of these songs as a joke. Why are these songs so happy and childish? It's just stupid. I feel like I've been castrated whenever I hear them. I know dance songs are made to target the CHR and HAC audiences, but still.

I don't think that's what they're called.

I don't think that's what they're called. I'm not sure there's an official term for it, but "triplet drops" is a pretty apt description.

Well that 12/8 time signature is made up of triplets is it not?

Well that 12/8 time signature is made up of triplets is it not? But there's still four beats...? Maybe I'm just not clear on what makes a triplet then.

Well a standard 4/4 bar can be broken down into 16 parts (4 per beat), while a 12/8 would be broken down into 12 parts (3 per beat) IDK how to explain it in just words, in proper notation would be better.

The 4/4 is like the basic 5-6-7-8 beat that people use in choreography, whereas the 12/8 triplet beat sounds like this: Havana Brown's "Warrior" has the same transition from 4/4 to the triplets in the drop.

I know. I just can't articulate it properly from how it sounds in my head.
