This time, we take a look at a chart that included both Elton John and Mariah Carey as both of them debuted on the 4/5/2014 chart.
In October 2002 it was Vanessa Carlton who has a thousand miles ahead of the competition as her debut single was enjoying a lengthy stay at the top, however she had some wuick challengers fast approaching. At a time of quick non-Christmas AC-rises, Faith Hill climbed 6-2 with "Cry" and Phil Collins was already #4 in his 3rd week with "Can't Stop Loving You.' Both song would eventually top the chart.
The top 10 has a double play from Celine Dion (who we also see on this week's chart) who was charting with her most recent #1, "A New Day Has Come" and its follow-up single "I'm Alive." At this point, ANDHC had broken the record for most weeks at #1 with 21 weeks (the record would be shattered in 2003 by Uncle Kracker).
Jim Brickman had a non-Christmas piece with "You" and another instrumentalist Kenny G. was also on the chart with R&B singer Chante Moore.
Remember when Kelly Clarkson was that girl who won American Idol? Well her first single was rising quickly as "A Moment Like This" was up 7 spots. Since her days on Idol she has become a staple on AC, Hot AC & Top 40 radio.
Anybody remember country singer Kellie Coffey? "When You Lie Next To Me" was her only crossover hit, eventually peaking at #14 here. She has pretty much been branded as a one-hit wonder in the country world. The follow-up single "At the End of the Day" did reach #18 on country, but she has not reached the top 20 since, and her 2nd album was shelved. Her last charting single was in 2004 with a cover of Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father."
Another artist we haven't heard much from is Chris Emerson. He was rising with "All because Of You" after the song was used in the TV series "Dawson's Creek." The song reached its peak this week, and unfortunately for Chris, we have not heard from him since.
In an AC time warp, we see Jackson Browne stuck in the middle of a James Taylor sandwich. Taylor was scoring some AC success with 2 songs from his album "October Road." Unofficially he saw 4 tracks from the album make the AC chart, the first was his rendition of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" which was a bonus track on the album. In 2003, he reached #25 with the final single, "September Grass."
Let's take a look at Elton & Mariah here. "Original Sin" was the 3rd single off Elton's album "Songs From The West Coast" to make the chart. The first 2 singles both reached the top 10, and Elton, who at this point in his career refused to appear in his own music videos, was replaced by singer Mandy Moore who lip synced. In "I Want Love," Robert Downey Jr took over for Elton, while Justin Timberlake dressed as a young Elton for the video of "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore."
Mariah Carey was making her return after a public breakdown in 2001, fueled by stress, the break-up with singer Luis Miguel, and the flops of her album and movie "Glitter." Rested and refreshed, "Through the Rain" was the first single off her album "Charmbracelet." Unfortunately, the song became her lowest peaking lead single to date, only reaching #81 on the Hot 100. On the AC chart, it reached #17 in its 4th week. Since then, Mariah has made 4 more appearances in the top 10, 2 of which were with Christmas songs. The others were with "We Belong Together" and her rendition of "I Want to Know What Love Is."
