I agree, this will almost definitely be the final single from the album. After 10 weeks, it's at #40, which isn't bad at all, considering it's a fourth single. I wouldn't be surprised if it peaks lower than the album's other singles, just due to the fact that it is a 4th single.

I really want this song to do well. At least better than 40. I hadn't been much of a Randy fan until I bought, "How Country Feels." By far my favorite song on the entire album. Kind of a gutsy move to send this to radio these days, after what we hear now. It's a simple country song with so much power. Just wish it had more power on the charts. But, like people have said before, considering it's a fourth single, 40 isn't all that horrible.

It'll definitely move a bit slower as compared to the A-list artists' singles, and probably slower than Houser's last 3 hits (again, mostly because this is the 4th release from the album), but so far I think it's doing just fine. It gained almost 200k in today's Mediabase update, and its 7-day spin gain is +164, which is a bigger bullet than almost all other songs outside the Mediabase top 30 right now. Suffice it to say that I like this one's chances.

Pretty cool video of Randy performing Like A Cowboy on the Grand Ol' Opry with Lee Brice and Jerrod Niemann:

That rendition was a little slow for my taste, but his vocal was pretty impressive. I still can't believe that the guy who gives a great vocal performance on this song is the same guy who murdered my eardrums with "Boots On" and "Whistlin' Dixie" a few years back.

Did this drop out of the Top 30 on MB or am I seeing things?

Did this drop out of the Top 30 on MB or am I seeing things? It hasn't reached the top 30 on MB yet. It sits at #37 from #38 last week with a +400 point increase and over .700 million in audience gained.

Really like this song. Obviously we can expect great vocals from Randy but musically, the song is composed beautifully. It is simple, but not dull. The steel guitar adds a nice vibe that is unfortunately becoming forgotten in the pop country songs.

More experienced chart watchers: is this song toast? It saw a larger increase this week than it had previously, but after 20 weeks should this have cracked the top 30?
I know Randy is typically slow-moving, but I would hate to see such a great song fall off the charts, when most people here predicted a top 10 peak for this one.

I wouldn't call myself an experienced chart watcher, but I will say that Broken Bow is no stranger to slow chart runs. They've got Jason Aldean whose singles always zoom up the charts in 10-15 weeks, but other than that most of their acts are very slow to climb the charts. "Everything I Shouldn't Be Thinking About" (Thompson Square) took about 40 weeks to reach #4 on the charts. "Carolina" (Parmalee) took over 40 weeks to reach #1 and "Close Your Eyes" (also Parmalee) has taken close to 40 weeks to scrape the top 20, but now it's actually doing sort of well on the charts. I'm expecting a similar run for "Like a Cowboy," maybe about a 40-week run to #8. I wouldn't say the single is "toast," "done," or whatever other terms people use to describe a song that's finished its chart run these days. Actually, this record is selling pretty decently on iTunes for a B-lister like Randy Houser and for a fourth single. I think there's some stuff going for this Randy Houser single. If only Clear Channel didn't have to tamper with the charts so much. Either this week or next we should be getting a new "On the Verge" artist whose single will blast into the top 30 and there goes "Cowboy"'s +1 move for a week. There will be several other songs passing this single soon, such as "Talladega," "Til It's Gone," "Drinking Class," and possibly "Make Me Wanna." Despite the "chart traffic," I do expect to eventually see "Cowboy" slowly and steadily make its way into the top 20 and I would be pretty surprised if the bottom caved in on this single anytime soon.

Actually, this record is selling pretty decently on iTunes for a B-lister like Randy Houser and for a third single. It's actually the 4th single from the album :) But anyway, I agree with your post. Sure, this has had a slow climb, but I don't have any reason to think that the label will give up on it yet. I don't know if it can make it all the way into the top 10 but I do think Stoney Creek will stick with this one for a while yet. I am sure that the label knew this would be a slow-climber when they released it, and I think they are perfectly okay with that. The long-term goal, of course, is to have Randy's string of hits eventually translate into quicker-climbing singles, but for the 4th release from an album, this one is doing just fine, especially in regards to digital sales.

I heard this on the radio today and apparently "Like a Cowboy" is No. 1 in Kansas City (or just on that particular station? not sure how it works). Even before I left for school in Wichita two months ago I was hearing it all the time on the radio in KC. Now if only the rest of the country would get up to speed on this great song!

I see you have three country stations in Kansas City. KBEQ has Frankie Ballard at #1 while Randy Houser is at #22. WDAF has Ballard at #1 while Houser is at #16. The station playlist for KFKF was not available. If I can get it, I will post who is tops there and where Houser is.

Where the top 10 of the night (or week) is decided by how many people request the song.

Yeah, maybe it was something like that. I'm not surprised to see Frankie Ballard's song at #1 here either; radio here seems to be pretty infatuated with him.

This one has been moving up nicely lately.
I was looking on Mediabase and one of the leaders for songs is a station in Orlando. The song was spun 78 times in the past week, taking 1st place in a relatively large market. Is this a case of this station just LOVING this song? I'm a bit confused. It was also spun 22 times in the overnight in the past week. That's 3 times a night, just overnight? That seems extraordinarily excessive, even for a song that I love. What's going on, and is this typical?
(Just for reference, Neon Light is in 2nd at 74 spins)

What's going on, and is this typical? (Just for reference, Neon Light is in 2nd at 74 spins) Orlando is usually notorious for this. Every station is different and Orlando sometimes plays songs in the middle of the chart at a high rate. I remember "Outta My Head" being spun well over 60 times a week when it was approaching the top 20. Some stations like WQNU in Louisville spins their top songs over 90 times per week. Despite its struggles, "Tattoo" by Hunter Hayes was tied for 7th in spins at WCTK in Providence with 44 spins this past week. Orlando is fairly big but I wouldn't call it a "Large" market. It's the 33rd biggest market on the MB panel. Some stations like Orlando tend to sometimes play songs in the 20's over 60 times per week. Some stations like WJVC in Long Island play many lower charting songs like "Lie A Little Better", "One Night Between Friends", "Love You Like That", "Love Me Like You Mean It", and "This Kind Of Town" - as well as play them throughout the day and not in the dead of night like some others do (WYRK). This really is nothing too unusual. Some of these playlist will leave your head scratching. It takes a lot for me to be super surprised by playlists since I've seen so many of them. lol.

Man, this song had a great update today, not only did it gain over 129 spins and almost 900k in Audience, but it jumped from #22 to #19 on today's Mediabase update!!! Glad to see this song is now starting to move. Hoping for a top ten still but won't count my chickens just yet but would like a top ten for this or at least top 15 at best. It deserves #1 but I will take top ten as it's a fourth single from a near 2 year old album. This is probably my favorite single off the album How Country Feels and I am glad he or his label decided to go with this as the fourth single.

Well it finishes at #19 on MB this week as it increased 461 spins and over 4.7 million in audience, jumping RaeLynn, Dan + Shay, and Brett Eldredge. I think top 10 is certainly not out of the question as Stoney Creek has proven to get their songs to the finish line goal once they reach this point of the chart.

Is there any chance of another single? He's got some nice momentum right now, and I haven't seen anything about him recording for a new album or anything.

This song will peak in January or February most likely, almost 2 years after the album came out. This song is taking forever to climb the charts, and the album sales are next to nothing (though not many people are selling that well anyways). My guess is they'll wait a couple months after this peaks, then have a new single out late Spring or early summer.

My question is, after this album cycles through, where does Randy stand among the big names of the industry? I mean this was a shockingly super successful album (a very pleasant one at that). I know he's not at the level of Aldean, Shelton, or Bryan but I don't think guys like Houser, Lee Brice, and Chris Young can be considered part of the "B" level stars anymore. They're in a weird middle ground imo. I think that those three will be the next big names of Country music shortly.

They're in a weird middle ground imo. I think that those three will be the next big names of Country music shortly. It will really depend on whether the hit singles from How Country Feels can help Randy transcend to higher album sales with his next projects. Did the first 3 big hits + LAC generate enough of a fan 'base' that they'll be more apt to purchase his next album right away when it's released? We haven't seen that with Lee Brice yet, although the strong digital sales for "Drinking Class" leads me to believe he's getting closer. And we certainly didn't see that with Jake Owen or Kip Moore, so it will really depend on the material Randy has and just the general cycling of momentum...in other words, it will also really depend on what other artists are doing or what direction radio is going in. If another half a dozen artists score 1-2 big hits, then it will be tough for Randy to assert himself as one of the biggest names a la Luke, Eric, or FGL. Because for every new artist that scores a breakthrough hit, another artist takes a "hit" in terms of momentum--not all of these momentum artists can 'fit' on radio playlists at the same time. Guys like Chris Young, Joe Nichols, and Dierks Bentley have never been able to jump up to "superstar" status but it doesn't mean that they can't have big hits with most of what they release. It simply means that every now and then they 'cool off' a bit, and I could see Randy doing that as well. But it's really gonna be impossible to predict at this point.

^I think Randy's next lead single should do well as long as it's not something weird or radio unfriendly (like Randy doing a Sam Hunt type of song). I think Randy is a little too old already to become an A-lister, but like jhomes87 said, I could see him continuing to have a steady career like Chris Young, Billy Currington and Dierks. Randy is going to be harder to predict because his last album kind of came out of nowhere.

I'm so happy to see this is going to make the top 10. Right now its bullet is twice that of FLGA Line's trashy song. It's almost the anti-2010's song as it's a modern day cowboy themed song that would have fit in easily with 90s and early 00's Brooks and Dunn music. Maybe this is a small sign that radio will accept more traditional music in 2015. I haven't liked a Randy song this much since "Anything Goes." I believe it will make it all the way to #1!

When they released this, I thought it was an instant smash. Hasn't worked out that way, but you had to figure this would stand the test of time. Great, great record. Song of the Year, Single of the Year, Video of the Year as far as I'm concerned.

For the fourth single (a traditional one, nonetheless) from an artist who really hasn't done much for radio prior to this album, this is outstanding. Randy's got a top-notch voice and he is a great performer on top of it. If he sticks to his roots on his next album, he could be very big one day. The only thing going against him is his age. But I think the nature of country radio is about to shift and that may not be such a problem.
While I am a FGL fan, glad to see that this excellent song is making a fight to jump Sun Daze and find it's way into the top 10!
