There are a ton of iconic/instantly recognizable intros in lots of different genres.
My friend and I came up with a few:
1. Sweet Child O' Mine 2. Back In Black 3. Thriller 4. Man, I Feel Like A Woman
Others?

Beyonce - Crazy In Love (the horns) Christina Aguilera - Vanity ("I'm not cocky, I just love myself. Bitch!" Eurythmics - I Need A Man ("Hey! Is this my turn? You want me to sing now? Okay. WOOOOW!") George Kranz - Din Da Da (the yell) Kevin Aviance - Rhythm Is My Bitch ("I am the dominator, you are the servant, and the rhythm is my bitch!") Madonna - Erotica (the noise of the record leading into the bass) Madonna - Thief Of Hearts (the glass breaking, "Bitch!") Madonna - Vogue ("What are you looking at?") Prince - 319 (the opening phone call) Sandra - Maria Magdalena (the opening synth keys) Whitney Houston - It's Not Right But It's Okay (Thunderpuss Mix) (those opening bars are recognizable anywhere)

I would've said Crazy in Love but that one is a sample disqualified Ideas: - Europe's 'The Final Countdown' (classic synth!) - Survivor's 'Eye of the Tiger' (forever representing box and other fights) - Madonna's 'Like a Prayer' (prince's guitar, door shut off and silence) -

To defend myself: "Just Dance": "RedOne! Konvict! Gaga!" "Poker Face": the "ma ma ma ma" speaks for itself. "LoveGame": so does the HA! part "Paparazzi": It sounds very sinister in the beginning. "Bad Romance" self-explanatory. "Telephone": Same as "Paparazzi". "Alejandro": "I know that we are young and I know that you may love me, but I just can't be with you like this anymore... Alejandro." "Born This Way": "It doesn't matter if you love him or capital H-I-M..." "Judas": same as BR TEOG: Those heartbeats... "You & I": The rock influence. "Marry The Night": The keyboard pretty much. "Applause": The KIA commercial speaks for itself. "Do What U Want": What? Gaga has a slow R&B song? "G.U.Y.": "Greetings, Himeros..."

More: - Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams" (back home associated with the Nightmares horror movies) - Madonna "Papa Don't Preach" (iconic strings) - Madonna "Ray of Light" (guitars with some subtle electronic vibe underneath that summarized the whole album) - Pet Shop Boys "It's a Sin" (drama, religiosity, tension, perfection!) - Pet Shop Boys "Left to my own devices" (practically a string opus that was great on its own) - Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive" (those piano notes may be simple but immortal) - Meat Loaf "I'd do anything for love" (epic!)

Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is YouFrom the opening bells, to Mariah's a cappella-ish part, to the bells ringing louder now as they flow into the first verse... ICONIC!

I guess it's songs like "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Smoke On the Water" that have a really good riff. That's one of the things that can make an intro an iconic one; a really good riff.

The opening chord in "A Hard Day's Night" might be the most iconic rock intro of all time.
