Perhaps they wanted to rush this particular song out due to the upcoming wedding season? Seems like the perfect song for that if you ask me.
Sony needs to slow down with the new artists. I'm seriously losing count at this point. I believe this makes somewhere between 21-22 total artists among the three labels.

I count 23-24 artists on Sony's roster now, the only one not officially being confirmed (as far as I know) is Carly Pearce. A couple others still haven't been assigned to labels. The 24 number includes Chase Rice, too. Technically Sony does have a couple artists that are basically dormant--Kix Brooks, Pistol Annies, and Dee Jay Silver--but still, the number is definitely rising. I don't know how many albums Kix has on his contract with Arista but he'll probably never crack the top 40 again. Pistol Annies can move albums but RCA hasn't shown a commitment to launch them as a radio act, and even with Dee Jay Silver set to release an album sometime this year or next, there's no way his stuff will do very well at radio. Sony will probably have to re-open a 4th label, perhaps bringing back the BNA, Epic, or Monument names. Anyway, apparently Ben was on Season 1 of the X Factor? I thought I saw that somewhere online. And I also read that this song is a cover of a pop song from group Runner Runner. It does seem like a good single release for 'wedding season' but listening to this just now nearly put me to sleep. I can't see this cracking the top 40.

I can't see this cracking the top 40. I always forget about Kix. And Dee Jay Silver I would like to think isn't on their roster with that dreadful radio show and his club mix re-mixes of country songs. I agree with them bringing back a label from the dead like Epic or BNA. Perhaps that's a reason why some haven't been assigned to a specific label yet. Either way it will be interesting to see what happens with them in the coming months. This songs OK I guess. The perfect wedding theme is the obvious reason why they are sending it out so quick.

It makes sense to push this quickly given the time frame. I know it's a cover from a pop album but honestly the song works really well in Country, though its status as a power ballad may ultimately be it's drawback.

Does any label pick up artists and discard them as quickly as Sony? Perhaps that is just my impression.
As for the song-its 'nice'. Might do ok since it is a stand out among all the summer/party songs.

This is one of the most peculiar releases I can recall in recent memory. Sony just signed this guy, but now they're dumping this song on radio with virtually no fanfare at all, and he hasn't even been assigned to a label ??? It almost seems like they're trying to sabotage his career, but that makes zero sense since they just signed him within the last couple of weeks.
I wouldn't be surprised if this song misses the charts altogether...but maybe it will sneak into the 50's later this spring.

Really surprised how good of a song this is but I have never once even heard a mention of this guys name before and they're just sending this blindly out to radio. I bet if Keith Urban cut this it'd be a #1.

However, as much as I like the "feel" of this one, I think you may be right.

This went for adds last week and got only 1 add. I am thinking that Sony will probably just work it to secondary radio first, since they haven't even assigned him to Arista, RCA, or Columbia yet.
As I said before, just a very peculiar release. No fanfare, no announcement of him signing with Sony, but yet they gave a song an adds date? That's a new one. There is virtually nothing on this guy or this song anywhere online.

^ Wasn't the same true of Lisa Shaffer when she was on Lyric Street? I seem to recall that she was never actually on LS's website, and there was nothing out there on her. She just put one single out with no promotion and disappeared.
Then again, there was nothing online about Kelleigh Bannen even when "Sorry on the Rocks" was sitting at #41. Or Matt Kennon when "The Call" was IN THE TOP 40.

Lisa was on Lyric Streets site while "Just One" was on the chart (for 1 week :( ), I remember looking through her biography and pictures when the song appeared for it's sole week. You are correct on the other 2 though, I have no idea why EMI didn't have anything out for Kelleigh, she may have actually had a hit had they tried even a little harder.

Not to make this thread about Lisa Shaffer, but that was one of the most perplexing debuts ever. It was a new artist with little to no promotion, the song was much too strong and violent for country radio, and it was released during the start of summer. Then she was long gone after one lone week. Very odd to say the least.

Well at least Kelleigh was assigned to a UMG label (EMI), and her debut single got well over a dozen adds. In this case everything just lists Ben's label as "Sony Music Nashville". It got an adds date but 1 add, which is way less awareness than Kelleigh's "Sorry On The Rocks". Ben was just signed to Sony about 3-4 weeks ago so I'm left to assume that this is only going to secondary radio right now, since he didn't go on a radio tour or anything yet.

Ben has been assigned to Arista Nashville. This song is New & Active on Billboard with 218k in total audience.
According to Play MPE, this was re-shipped to all stations on Tuesday. I would not be surprised to see it get a new adds date sometime in June.

Sony has finally given this an adds date--it officially impacts country radio next Monday, August 4. SourceI just noticed that this thread was started back in April! Why in the world did they rush this song to country radio without the support of a radio tour and promotion? Then have it linger on the charts for three months before giving it an add date (which is just 7 days from now). Perhaps they wanted this song to capitalize on the wedding season, or have a head start at radio? Either way it's one of the more confusing artist debut's I've seen.

It could be that there was just enough general interest in it from both radio and fans (again, possibly because of wedding season). The iTunes sales have been great and I see that the song got another half dozen adds today, likely from stations that heard that it was indeed finally getting an actual adds date and decided to add it early. In the end it won't really matter that this spent a few weeks on the chart prior to its official impact.

I think I expected Sony to send another song to radio as his first official single. With them throwing this one out there back in April, perhaps they would want a song at radio so PD's are noticing him and it can fit for the wedding season while he does his radio tour - while they make plans for a new single down the road. But I think Jamie might be right about them getting enough positive feedback from radio that they decided to stick with this as the first official single, and therefore, give it an add date. Almost like test to see how radio reacted to the song.
Now as for the song itself; It's pretty decent and starting to grow on me. I still tend to lose interest in the melody and overall feel for the song but the lyrics and production are very solid. I keep getting a 2004/2005 feel to this, as it just sounds like a song that would have been released 10 years ago. I'm going to be quite curious to see how this performs now with that add date and Ben having more time to get acquainted with country radio.

You can add another to the Sony roster now too, it just hasn't been "officially announced" yet. But look for Ryan Griffin in the near future. So yes, ANOTHER new artist on Sony. Here's a video with Ryan and Lady A's Hillary Scott singing a song Ryan wrote. As for Ben Rue and "I Can't Wait"... I actually like the song a lot and think it's a nice refreshing change of pace from "bro-country". I hope it charts well for him I count 23-24 artists on Sony's roster now, the only one not officially being confirmed (as far as I know) is Carly Pearce. The Clear Channel station here in Phoenix has been playing about a 15-20 second snippet of this song (the chorus) basically as an ad, with a little message at the end saying "'I Can't Wait', the new single by Ben Rue, now available on iTunes courtesy of Arista Nashville". I wonder if other CC stations are doing that as well? It's not getting played nearly long enough to count as a spin but that might help to explain why this is top 200 on iTunes country despite virtually no airplay. It's definitely an interesting way of new promotion (or at least it's new to me).
I still view this mainly as a buzz single, though. I wouldn't be surprised to see Arista release something different either later this fall or right after the New Year.

I really like this song. It's sad that Country radio is not embracing this song.
