I also think this is one of those songs for which they might want to consider sending an acoustic version to radio once the initial buzz dies down. I feel like that chorus, which has a tremendous melody, is going to sound incredible without all the production.

This is easily the best thing they've put out. However, can somebody please, please, please tell me why Brian doesn't sing more? His voice is lightyears better than Tyler's. I noticed on their cover of "I'm in a Hurry" how smooth and nice BK's voice is to listen to. Tyler's vocals and the production (and the crappy lyrics and subject matter) are the main reasons why FGL has gotten so much ire from me, but BK I can actually listen to without wanting to rip my ears off.
Back to "Dirt," I really would have liked even more stripped-down production. It's still too loud in parts and way too tin-sounding. The lyrics made me roll my eyes when I read them last night, but set to music they aren't as lame. I don't think this is nearly as amazing as some are saying it is, but it is a hugely welcome change of pace from FGL.

What was the last country song to hit #1 on iTunes? (and not WANEGBT)

What was the last country song to hit #1 on iTunes? (and not WANEGBT) Begin Again and Cruise both did? I really am baffled by the support for this awful song on this forum. Oh how standards have fallen.

I thought Cruise only made it to #2? I guess I was mistaken, I wasn't aware Begin Again reached #1 either.

As many of said, best thing they have released (though that wouldn't take much). I like it, but the chorus just abruptly ends with the word dirt, like they are missing a couple words. and again, as many of said, please let Brian sing more.
Life changing - No Song of the Year Quality - Please, No A Large improvement over any song on their first record - YES

I'm in love with this song. I haven't loved an FGL single so much since Get Your Shine On or maybe Round Here!! (I'm a big FGL supporter, which is my personal choice. My whole family is.) This one is my new favorite. Can't wait to see how fast it climbs to #1!

I don't have much to add, aside from what others have said. This is MILES better than anything they've released thus far, but it's still mediocre at best.
And +1 to letting Brian sing over Tyler, because at least his vocals are bearable.
The lyrics are cringeworthy, but the production is pretty good (aside from the chorus).
Overall, I'll give it a C.

Official video: The guys are also doing something called the Dirt Campaign. First thing for that is raising $100,000 for Habitat for Humanity. You can read about it here.

Tyler's voice is so grating and one of the reasons their songs have always been channel changers for me. This is better than their previous songs, but it's not all that and is missing a hook.

While it's not unbearable, I can't say this song does much for me. I still think this is a pretty typical Florida Georgia Line song and I get a "Round Here" vibe from it. It's unnecessarily overproduced and I find Tyler Hubbard's vocals grating as ever. Both of those things really hurt the song for me. It's melodic, but so are some of their other songs. The chorus is the best part, and I usually like a good soaring melody, but I think it's the vocals and overproduction that bring this one down for me.
I appreciate the smoother tone of Brian Kelley's voice and I just realized that Tyler sings lead pretty much all the time in all of their singles. I always assumed that Brian sounded like Tyler because Tyler's voice overpowers everything, even the production. Still don't know how crazy I am about Brian's voice either, but I do know that I can handle it better than Tyler's. With that said, I get the feeling that both of them can technically sing. I could be wrong since I've never seen them live, but I don't get the feeling that they're just studio creations with no talent. I wasn't watching the video very closely and at first I thought the mom fell down because the kids were throwing potatoes at her. LOL.

I have wanted to participate in Habitat for Humanity ever since the Joplin tornado; I think it's great that they're raising money for that.

This song is fantastic and is nothing like anything they've ever done. Sadly, it's becoming increasing obvious that there are those on this board that will never give these guys a fair shake no matter what material they put out ... Not that they would ever care or ever have the time to take notice of this negligible little country music forum.

But most people here just won't give them a chance, which is a shame. They can make good, fun songs that if people would only relax and quit worrying about lyric perfection, they'd enjoy.

A lot of the country music here that receives praise I can't stand, and I love songs that get hate (Thats My Kinda Night, This Is How We Roll, Cruise, etc) it's all just opinion really although some people do overdo it.

I've stated numerous times that I take more issue with Tyler Hubbard's vocals and Joey Moi's overloud production more than just about anything. If you'd actually read what people are saying in this thread rather than trying to start crap, you'd know that this is singularly the most positive FGL thread we've had on this board. Talk about not being satisfied.

I like this song, but I'd really like it if the chorus is just so loud. I don't understand what they were thinking the whole song is a low-mid temple them BAM let's scream at the top our lungs and play as loud as humanly possible. This will definitely be a quick number one, possible by the end of the month to mid august. Doubt it'll take long at all.

I'll also add that I wish they would let BK sing more, his voice is great just listen to people back home.

This is now #1 on the all-genre iTunes chart, which doesn't surprise me at all.
This is undoubtedly the best song they've released to radio (admittedly I never listened to their debut album). It's still a little overproduced, and the lyrics don't stand out at all. The constant rhyming of "it" with "it" seems a little uninspired and tedious. Still, I don't see this annoying me at all. It's actually a pretty pleasant listen. It's not Song of the Year material, but it's a solid song.

I appreciate the insight into BK's vocals, because wow it really does sound better than Tyler in this small sample size. I've listened to the song a few times, and I really do appreciate the change of pace by these guys into maybe something that hits home more than the party songs of the past. I don't think it will be either a station changer or a favorite for me, and I really like to hear differing opinions on songs like this. I'm sure the moderator will make an appearance at some point to emphasize this isn't the CHR/POP board and we have different rules in this forum. I think it's telling that it took a new single by FGL to create a thread that reads very much like the POP board does, even down to talking hourly Itunes rankings. Everyone has opinions, let people share what they think even if it doesn't match with what you believe or think. Just because we are a "negligible little country music forum" doesn't mean we can't have nice things :)

I like this. It is a really solid song and want they needed for a first effort off a second record.
However. . It is not "song of the year", and still nowhere near some of the best songs of the past five years. .. it feels to me almost like the bar was so low for fgl (I do enjoy some of their tunes) that anything that didn't suck was going to obviously be perceived as a miracle.
Will buy this one though!

Biggest surprise of the year thus far!! I'm really digging the song and video right now. So refreshing to hear Brian singing for a change and at least they aren't on the party wagon with this song and have released their first ballad. Hope that this is the start of something better for FGL than the party songs they have released thus far.

I felt like they were over-cooked at radio and it turned me off to their music. I do think this is the right direction for them as artists. Radio will love it and over-play it but I won't be as likely to change the station when this song comes on. This will be BIG for them and I expect more award nominations because of it.

Hope that this is the start of something better for FGL than the party songs they have released thus far. BK also sang a verse on "Tip it Back" from the debut album. It's probably one of my least favorite songs on the album (the lyrics are just too lame), but I've seen a few reviewers highlight that one. I don't think they're at all going to leave party songs - and they'd be stupid to do so. But they 100% needed something disruptive for this release, and this is 100% that. It instantly becomes one of the best mainstream country songs on the air right now, and it shows that they can do something a little different. I sort of refer to the debut album as the "Teenage Dream" of country music because literally everything from that album could have been a top 20 single. "Dayum, Baby" and "Hell Raisin' Heat of the Summer" could have been #1s. But there was virtually no range to the record - save for the Nickelback-esque Stay, the songs they DID release all sound the same - and the non-single tracks sound virtually the same. This at least suggests there will be some variety on what will surely be the biggest non-Luke Bryan or Taylor Swift country album released in recent memory.

Admittedly, I am not a fan of Florida Georgia Line (I don't care for Tyler's vocals, and the rap/rock phrasing they do on most of their songs turns me off), but I gave this song a listen and was pleasantly surprised! The lyrics are superior to anything they've ever put out, and I LOVE that its not a party song, but a song about life. The video was an improvement too, loved the sweet tale of a couple's life together. My only negative comment is in regards to some of the vocals, I can't understand some of what Tyler is saying (but I think that lends to my dislike of his vocal style). I won't be going out of my way to listen to this song but kudos to Florida-Georgia Line for branching out and covering a different topic/sound!
