I don't think Hunter's opening week sales were soft for him at all. This notion that he's young and being marketed like a country Bieber/Swift hybrid is more something perceived by certain fans than anything. Outside of "Wanted" getting moderate crossover success, I don't see it outside the fact that he's young and attractive. The singles from his debut did promisingly well, but not in a way that suggested he was already a huge force. Also, a lot of his sales (especially with regards to the "Wanted" single exceeding 3 million copies) came from the crossover airplay of that single. He didn't have that this go-around, much like Lady A's Golden was reaching a smaller purchasing audience because "Downtown" was not a crossover hit like "Need You Now" or "Just a Kiss" before it. Not to mention, Hunter's debut album's sales increased and held steady over the course of its run, so I expect this album will also have legs once more hit singles come from it ("Invisible" didn't do much for him airplay-wise).

Hunter does indeed have the same fanbase. But with so many avenues to listen to the music (spotify, youtube, Beats., etc), fans just aren't necessarily BUYING the music. Still, he never had 1,000,000 or more core fans. His sales are right in line with other regular mainstream country artists. Yes, he's young, yes a lot of his fans crossover to pop but without Pop radio, he's not ever gonna have gigantic single success unless a song like "Wanted" ("Still Falling" Could be that song on this album) gets on there. He's gonna have to build his career up as he goes along just like every other younger artist. As for what Spacey_Kacey says, I don't know how his album isn't as melodic as his last one I also don't think he 'tried to write melodies specifically for the teen market.' He just wrote lyrics and melodies that appealed to him. As for the 'singles' I doubt either "You Think You Now Somebody" or "When Did You Stop Loving Me" are even on their radar as potential singles.

Also, I think it'll be Still Falling for the next single after Tattoo but I could be wrong.

Exactly. This isn't the 90s when multi-million selling albums was as common as Kleenex. Even Platinum albmums are rare these days. There was only 2 ways to get songs back then...buy them or record them on cassette tape off the radio. Pirating music meant copying a friend's cassette or CD that had been bought at some point. For people to expect sales to happen like that with up and coming artists today is just naïve. There may be 1 or 2 albums a year that sell to that point in Country, not 1 or 2 a month like way back when. Hunter is doing no different with his 2nd album than most other breakout stars who had big hits from their first album, and he's doing better than most. These days albums by artists who have multiple #1s are lucky to break 300,000 in sales. It's all about the digital single now, albums are an afterthought. I wouldn't be surprised if just EPs are the norm for even the biggest artists eventually. Hunter writes music for Hunter just like Kacey writes music for Kacey and Taylor writes for Taylor. It sticks where it sticks with whoever takes to it. That's called being an artist. I like Hunter's new album much better than his first one which I loved a lot. I already can't wait til his next album but that'll probably be at least 2017. As for this album "Still Falling" would be perfect for the next single as it'll be close to Winter when it's released.

"Still Falling" will be the perfect follow-up single to "Tattoo" but they may pull "Storyline" or "Wild Card" as a single before "Still Falling" too.

Hunter Hayes is reminding me of Bryan White more and more, especially with this new music. Both got popular around the same age (19/20), both got boosts from the popular women of the days (Bryan was Leann and Shania, Hunter was Taylor and Carrie), both wrote music that's blurred the Country/Pop lines, both excellent multi instrument musicians but most proficient on the guitar. I never understood why Bryan faded after being around 5 years or so. I know he made some industry people mad by releasing the Mutt Lange "You're Still Beautiful to Me" to radio and it died due to it's strong R&B tones, but hell, that song was a puppy compared to the Wolves that are on radio now. Bryan is still making music and he's not too old to be played but major labels and radio won't touch him. I just hope this isn't Hunter's future. I want him to stick around more than 5 years.

The Bryan White comparison is a good one, but the major difference I can see (and this will work very well in Hunter's favor) is that Hunter is also seen as a stellar musician in addition to the fact that he's a young, new male artist. I hope (and think) that distinction will set him apart a bit, and give him a bit more credibility within the industry. "Tattoo" is off to a good start so far, and I think his album sales are decent considering the current sales climate. His live performances are really the main thing he needs to work on if he wants to last for a long time in the business.

Yes but it got 10 adds last week and a few the week before that as well, so it's still pretty close to 50 adds on adds date. I think this one's going to go up more slowly, though...his album, while a decent-seller, has been overshadowed by the latest releases from Brantley and Miranda. And Hunter simply hasn't had a really big hit in a good 6-8 months now. There's just a lot of competition on the chart so I'm expecting "Tattoo" to wade through it more slowly. Kip Moore, Jerrod Niemann, and Sheryl Crow are all struggling badly. Randy Houser, Dan + Shay, and David Nail are also moving rather slowly but I think those 3 songs have a better chance at becoming hits.

First, 29 adds isn't absolutely terrible - it's just not befitting a superstar (but his album sales also weren't befitting a superstar). You can blame Invisible to an extent, but this also just isn't that interesting a song. Plenty said from the get go it was a really bland choice for a single -- it has boy band lyrics but musically echoes some of the more innocuous Keith Urban type tunes. Just not sure who the target is.

I have seen him perform several times live and while I believe he is a very talented musician, he has no vocal ability. I can't seem to get past that.

The few times I've seen Hunter perform on awards shows, he's been underwhelming. I'm sure that doesn't matter to his target audience, though. If I recall, he actually sounded good when he did that little bit of "Wanted" at the Grammys a year or two ago. But I agree -- his vocals are underwhelming more often than not. The problem seems to be a desire to bite off far more than he can chew. Even though his melodies are pretty simple, he always wants to infuse some runs and vocal acrobatics into his delivery, and he just doesn't have the chops at this point. And when you add in the fact that he is usually shredding on guitar and jumping around--he's a very high-energy performer--he REALLY should be keeping it far more simple vocally. He has a good ear and is obviously a musical prodigy with how many instruments he plays (at a high level). But he needs to done down and perfect his basic technique before trying to be an elite on-stage vocalist.

It seems the crossover success of "Wanted" has given people this false sense that Hunter is already an A-list country act, when he really hasn't had that many big singles and he's still quite new yet. I expect "Tattoo" to do well and return him to the Top 10 at least, imo.

I expect "Tattoo" to do well and return him to the Top 10 at least, imo. Agreed. He also had a clear channel deal for "I Want Crazy". Plus the fact he had two other #1's with Wanted" and "Somebody's Heartbreak", I think that people just jumped the gun a bit on his overall star status. That being said, "Invisible" did hurt him. It just wasn't a good song for radio, let alone a lead single, and I wasn't surprised at all how much it struggled after it's high debut. "Tattoo" having to start towards the 50's and work it's way up I think will help this song's chart peak (I think the CC deals should seriously stop and not be done by any artist, especially somebody as relatively new like Hunter) and get him back to the top 10 as well.

Hunter's CD is the 15th best-selling Country album of 2014 (Y-T-D). He's selling right at mid-tier star level. But what he's got that many of his peers don't is the ability to consistently sell-out dates thanks to his teen idol status. He's also similar to Bryan but I don't see where he'll fall off as fast either. Bryan sold two Platinum and one Gold record but that was the mid 90s when artists sneezed platinum (and I'm a Bryan White fan from back then). I see Hunter as more in the position that Blake Shelton was after his first record (albeit with more radio success). He can weather the storm with hits and "Tattoo" and other tracks from the "Storyline" record ("Still Fallin'" "Wild Card" and "Storyline") are potential big hits too.

Haven't heard the song yet, but I'm mostly on the Hunter bandwagon and I'm surprised to see this one struggling so badly. Good God, I think even "Storm Warning" climbed faster than this.

i agree this is moving slower then i expected. but he ruined his momentum after 'invisible' peaked so low. i think in the long run tattoo will end up a hit. if it doesnt then i think hunters gonna be in trouble with the rest of the era. i hope he can recover.

I agree that this is moving slower than slow, especially for someone like Hunter who even though is not a A level star IMO, is a solid B and has a few #1 hits under his belt, but this chart is jam packed. Right now on MB, Danielle Bradbery holds the #50 position with 1609 total points and nearly 1.9 in audience. Heck Jana Kramer sits at #48 and is at 3.1 million in audience. Hunter's at #51 with over 1500 total points. On BB, from #51 onward is tight as can be with John King, Danielle Bradbery and Chasin' Crazy all separated by just 0.010 in audience. Kip Moore, Josh Thompson and Hunter are just separated by just .155 in audience. Luckily there were a couple recurrents this week which helped a bit.
"Tattoo" got 9 more adds on MB this week and Warner/Atlantic is promoting this like crazy. "Invisible" hurt his momentum some, no doubt, but this song is still only 6 weeks old and should be making a bigger dent on the charts very soon. Would I be optimistic that this will break it big, No. But not time to hit the panic button either.

This needs to get moving soon! He needs to build momentum after Invisible didn't do anything much (which is a shame because it's a really powerful song.) I want to be able to jam to this more!

9 weeks on the chart and still at #42. Nothing to be super alarmed about yet, but it is moving a little slow for Hunter. While he's not in trouble by any means, I think it's safe to say that he's lost some momentum over the last year.

Dabbling in a duet with a pop singer and releasing a ballad like "Invisible" (while great lyrically) isn't going to help him with some programmers. I think this one will still be a Top 10 hit or better but he's gotta contend with all of the other strong new talent out there too.

The video is very unique if you ask me. If only he'd go back to the spiky hair instead of mimicking his dad now.
Also, this is moving way too slow for him!

Bland single choice that is in no way consistent with the lower-key, intimate, personal vibe that made Hunter Hayes famous? We shouldn't be surprised it's moving slowly.

i was expecting a better video tbh. i know he said they did another version but it was considered to "big" for him (or something like that). i curious to know what the version was bc this video is kinda...stationary (is this the right word lol) for a song this fun
